Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype?

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

Am I the only one that wants to hit 'Madonna' for getting it wrong? -MJ wasn't "The King" - he was "The King of Pop" - the other title is reserved for the one and only: ELVIS!

:techman: I agree absolutely. "The King" is ELVIS!

I graduated high school in 1986, had the Thriller album (everybody did), and I hadn't paid any attention to MJ in years. I find this whole thing to be a sickening, macabre spectacle that is completely generated by a self-serving media.:scream:

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa nellie

Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype?
No, you're not the only one.

He made music, and he was somewhat good at it. So? Lots of people die continuously, most of which are very good at what they do. And we've never met them, too, just as we've never met Michael Jackson. What makes him so important as to broadcast his funeral on television, while these other men get buried in silence?

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

...but i did ask two questions:
What are you watching instead of live television?
OK, so I do have another thread for that, but
Am I the only one that wants to hit 'Madonna' for getting it wrong?
^That was a real question!
Sorry old chap, missed that.

I watched a few episodes of The West Wing, just finishing up the 5th season on DVD. It is the weakest of all the seasons but it's still a whole lot better then most other series.

Now I'm actually trying to determine if my neighbours are having sex. It's that very distinctive thumping that tells me that they are, but it can't be too good since I can't hear any moaning.

Ah yes, Madonna. I don't want to hit her at all anymore, maybe ten years back.

Oh you meant punch?

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I see death differently than most people. Even when people I know personally die, it doesn't get to me that much. Everyone dies at some point, and being sad about it wont bring them back. I generally don't worry about things I have no control over.

I'm more concerned about the death of Billy Mays. Im going to be a marketing major in a few months, and Mays is sort of a personal hero of mine because he was good at what he did. That being considered, when I heard about his death my first thought was "Damn, now the Billy Mays vs. Vince ShamWow boxing match on Pay-Per-View will never happen..." So, yeah. Essentailly, I don't really care.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

There are similarities and differences to compare with the death of Elvis.

Similarites:

Micheal Jackson-Loved by audiences as a child. A trailblaizer in dance and dance music in the 80s/90s. Later, an almost characture of himself. Dead, too young and accidently on overdose of meds. Loved mother and children. Had a specialized home with memorabilia.

Elivs-Loved around Western society as a young man. A trailblaizer in his movements and rock-and-roll in the 50s/60s. Later, an almost characture of himself. Dead too young and accidently on overdose of meds. Loved mother and child. Had a specialized home with memorabilia.

Differences:

Micheal Jackson was loved globally. He lived during a time of globalization, internet and 24 hrs. news. He was clearly troubled, having a child-like personality and relating to children more than half his age (any more than that is speculation and unproved). Chidren/Wives were not coventional.

Elvis lived in a more low-tech time. Was in film, and his popularity grew because of it. Troubled, but privately (also because the media was a different animal back then). Child and marriages were more conventional.

So I get the coverage. Elvis coverage, considering the time period, was extensive as well.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I am sick to bloody death of hearing about the memorial service. He was a freakish, deformed pop singer, who, while being a talented performer, was NOT the greatest singer, nor the greatest human being. He was a crazy nutjob obsessed with little boys and was probably stoned out of his sick little mind for the last few years of his life.

I couldn't have said it better.

Down? Not on the first date.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

No you're not the only one. I was too busy to watch it today. Just tired of the whole thing.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I'm not trying to start an argument, I just want to add a thought:

If you're a person who has actively paid attention to any of the Casey Anthony crap, then do you really think you should fuss about Michael's funeral? He, at least, did have some small impact on our lives.

If you aren't, then nevermind.

She sure does have a way with words. I have to agree.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

Every night for the past week or so I've gone to bed and hoped it was over. Every morning I remain disappointed.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I definitely agree with what other posters have said so far. Personally, I thought he was a great performer and singer and loved his music(still do to this day) but he's not the ONLY one that died! Others have died as well and it's like he's the most important individual that has died. People are treating the guy like a god and frankly it's getting on my nerves cause there's one god and he's up in heaven looking down on us! He was not the most important pop star in my opinion that died. I think when Elvis died(or at least that is what Dad tells me) more people were upset about it, crying their eyes out for weeks. I'm like: yeah, I know he's dead and it's saddens me to hear about this..but let his family grieve for a while and let's move on..there's certainly more important news to discuss..like for instance, our crappy economy and what Obama is planning to do about it. I don't get all the hype either myself..but do respect him cause of his music. I have to say this: he was the way he was because of his father..from what I have seen and gathered, his father was a sick, twisted individual who robbed Micheal of his childhood and that's probably why he had such a sick fettish with little boys in 2002 and 2003. And I blame his appearance on his father as well..he was always criticizing him and putting down his self esteem. No wonder the guy had so many plastic surgeries that he practically looked like his nose was gonna fall off if you touched it! Anyway, that's my 0.2 cents on the matter.

"Not I!" said mrcoaster. Never owned "Thriller." I owned a Jackson 5 album way back when, but I was never a fan of MJ in his Thriller/etc. days and going forward. He had some good songs, but also some dreck, and if he came on the radio/MTV, I usually switched the channel ASAP.
