Envious of you meeting Neve, between us we have the whole Paternoster Gang as I've met Jenny and Strax (was fun getting Dan to sign it from one Starkey to another!)
Dan Starkey was at the same 2016 Phoenix Comicon as Neve McIntosh. They were both nice. The photo has all 3 Paternoster Gang members on it but I still don't have Jenny's autograph. I had Strax sign it, "Be obliterated!"
With Neve, we mostly ended up talking about how she has fond memories of classic
Doctor Who because her brother was a big fan and they both liked the idea that Jamie was a Scottish companion. It made me realize that all I really want in life is for a beautiful woman to look me in the eye and say, "Do you want to watch some Patrick Troughton?"
I have a lot of social anxiety and insecurity as it is and so paying $$$ to "meet" the stars and get their pictures just made me feel real uncomfortable. I have nothing against people that do but I didn't care for the experience.
Other conventions may do it differently but in Phoenix, you can stand in the autograph line and meet them without needing to pay anything so long as you're not getting anything signed. That's how I did it with Amanda Tapping and a few others and they were very nice about it.
But it is an odd experience, particularly since I realized that I generally don't want to meet the actors, I want to meet the characters they play. It's just that they don't exist, so meeting the actors is the next closest thing. Thankfully, the actors who play unpleasant, rude characters are usually some of the nicest of them in real life. (Spike from
Buffy/Angel & Tamsin from
Lost Girl are prime examples of this.)
I will say that what ruins the experience for me is when there's a long line. I feel too much pressure to get in & out quickly so I can make room for the person behind me, so I can't really relish the experience.
Oddly I think I was more flustered meeting Alicia Witt than Alyson Hannigan! She was lovely though!
Kill this child! She's an abomination!
I'd have no idea what to say other than going all fanboy and saying how much I loved them in this or that, which they'll probably be sick of hearing.
I think it depends on whether or not it comes from the heart. Samantha Carter is just sort of an iconic character for me, so, when I met Amanda Tapping, it all just kinda came pouring out of me, how much I loved & respected the character and how much she had influenced female characters in my own writing. I didn't plan it but that's how it went.
