Altruism???!!!

The Federation was engaged in a Cold War type of competition with the Klingons - the comparison was specifically drawn. In "A Private Little War" Kirk sacrifices the local culture's values for the self-interest of the Federation.

I don't want to get in the way of the beatdown you're giving Cheapjack, but it's not quite clear that Kirk had any way to preserve the local culture in APLW even if he had wanted to. If the Klingons can destabilize the situation by giving advanced military techs to the townsfolk, then preserving the peaceful hill culture just isn't on.

I think someposters here have intermittent hearing or sight problems.
Cheapjack, I suggested earlier in the thread that you might want to avoid making backhanded slaps like this one. Let me remind you again to address the content of their posts rather than insulting the posters themselves.

Let me also call your attention to the Multi-Quote button, [ ] which will allow you to respond to several posts in one of your own, thereby avoiding those instances of double- and triple-posting which now litter this thread.

It is quite common with immature persons to resort to insult in lieu of reason. The McCain-Palin campaign is a current example. They rarely understand that such actions alienate the very same people they seek to persuade.

What about ST6 - 'Once again we've saved civilisation as we know it'.?

ONCE AGAIN, note.

What about 'All Good Things'?

'If it puts your mind at ease, you've saved Humanity once again'

Encounter - 'At which time you slaughtered millions in silly little arguments about how to divide the resources of your little world'

The Neutral Zone ' We're no longer interested in the accumulation of things'.

Kennedy wasn't altruistic? He ended up giving his own life for his beliefs, as did his brother.

I don't think some people here wil ever be convinced, unless someone in a future Trek directly says: 'Im going to be altruistic- as Cheapjack said'.

I think that Kennedy once said that we all end up having to 'account for ourselves in the High court'. If you honestly want me to give you a page of quotes from Kennedy demonstrating his altruistic beliefs, Im not. It was self evident. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Military were all for starting WW3. Kennedy's was the only cool head at the table.

'We all inhabit this small planet, we all breath the same air'.

It's saddening that on a Star Trek board, there are those that refuse to believe that real or fictional characters can exihibit altruism.

What about anyone that CHOOSES to serve in the military? They risk their lives for others. Policemen do. Firemen do. I think some people are just being silly.

His brother - much as I admire him - lost his life in the pursuit of political power. I hate to disillusion you, but that is never selfless. John Kennedy was shot because he was President. I won't engage in tinfoil-hat speculation about the who and why of it; some people will remain convinced until the end of time of ridiculous things where the JFK assassination is concerned. Oswald was a whack-job.

I don't think some people here wil ever be convinced, unless someone in a future Trek directly says: 'Im going to be altruistic- as Cheapjack said'.

And since that will never happen - creative people giving this silly assertion that altruism is the basis of Trek their imprimatur - there's no reason for anyone to be convinced.

You remain determined to conflate what people say about altrusim and sacrifice (two concepts that your statements often confuse) with what people actually do. The former is inferior evidence and should be disregarded where it's contradicted by actions.

Nor, BTW, was kennedy being "altruistic" by doing what he thought best to avoid having his nation devastated by a nuclear exchange - such behavior was supremely self-interested. One might better argue that the willingness of some military/political figures to risk war in order to protect some ideals or principles of how the world ought to remain was pretty damned sacrificial or even "altruistic."

We seem to be wandering somewhat far afield of the original topic (altruism in the new Star Trek movie) and there's that problem with "poster instead of post" cropping up again. I've asked you twice to stop it.

What does any of that have to do with whether or not altruism will feature in ST:XI?

I think some people are just being silly.
And I think you're having us on. Thread closed.

If you start another one, please be sure to:

1) State the topic to be discussed clearly,
2) Support your assertions, and
3) Stick to the topic instead of veering off into vague accusations aimed at the people who post in the thread.

If you can do that, we'll be fine. If not, then... well, why are you here?
