ALPHA's a new series on sy fy: disscussion and comments *spoiler*

The only reason I know anything about this is because Ira Steven Behr of TNG and DS9 signed up for the series after seeing the pilot. So it may not be so bland.

Liked it better than I thought I would. The characters have their own quirks, allowing them to escape being mundane, at least. Nothing groundbreaking, and of course Heroes did it far better, but I'll also stick around. Reminds me a bit of Breakout Kings in ensemble feel and character delineation.

I fell asleep towards the end for about 10 minutes and didn't really care to see what I missed. The show was kind of dull. But I'll give it another chance. As someone else said, they usually adjust the show during the first couple episodes. For one, it looks like Prof X shaves his beard. I'm sure that will have a huge significance to an upcoming plot.

So...So far, it seems like Mission Impossible with Meta-humans, instead of regular Spies. I think it was very well done for what it was, for a Pilot, I have nothing to complain about, and Ep 2 brings new Producers, so it may get even better.

I'm not sure I'm in the market to invest in a Superheroes without costumes show right now, Heroes, pretty well burned me out, but, this one is well done so far, and may yet drag me in if it gets even better.

Anyone who's in the market for this kinda show, I vouch for it.
I don't know if I'd even call it a superhero show though. It comes across as more of a mystery or thriller, where the characters just happen to have superhuman abilities, than a real superhero show.

Fair enough if the word Superhero doesn't work for you, my post can be changed to Super (or Meta-) Humans without costumes, if you like

Dr Rosen's reassurance that he would "protect" Hicks(?) didn't reassure me. A sinister edge to it. I know, intended--and nicely contrasting with his touchy-feely style.

I didn't catch the first Red Flag reference. What is it?

That's how I saw it miniHulk did nothing much more then kick a doors and every other cop does that or if the show is adventurous they have a SWAT officer hit the door with a battering ram so the detective can go in first. The internet guy could have been Eric of NCIS LA or Kono of Hawaii 5-0 in a van with the TV copland superduper computer. Supersense girl could have been any CSI with their pocket flashlights. Bullseye was the standard ex SEAL/Ranger/Scout-Sniper/Force Recon veteran. Which leaves us with the pusher, similar to conning your way in that as has been done from Maverick to Rockford down to the girl on Leverage and the short cons the "deep cover" LA NCIS team pulls

The "internetguy" reminded me of the Drummer form Planetary.

Well, his abilities at least.

Well at least now we know why they whacked him over on Bones.

I only caught part of the ep. I'm still trying to decide how much of Vosen-- oops, I mean Rosen-- is really being touchy-feely and how much is just an act to disguise a manipulator.

I'll watch. I'm hopefully it'll be better than a cheap Heroes retread.

No, that would've been SyFy's painfully cheap and bland Painkiller Jane (where the showrunner was actually proud to strip everything that made the comic book what it was and turn it into whatever the hell he wanted, which was a whole lot of nothing).

I enjoyed the pilot quite a bit, and look forward to seeing what direction the show takes with Behr and Wolfe joining the production staff next episode.

I liked the procedural + superpowers with limitations atmosphere that helps keep things sort of grounded but scifiish at the same time. Hopefully, it'll keep them from going so overboard with the characters powers that they keep having to come up with contrived plot points to limit their powers when it's not dramatically expedient.

I also think the slightly more serious tone (with humor) of the show provides a nice balance to close out the night when following the more whimsical Eureka and Warehouse 13. That's a solid lineup.

I'm interested to see where they go with Dr. Rosen from the couple of hints they dropped in the episode that the team might not be on the right side of things vs. Red Flag (which is hard to believe with the other side killing innocents, however) and with him extorting Deadshot I mean Bullseye I mean Cameron into joining the team. Plus, you can't trust Leoben.

Red Flag is an interesting choice of name for the opposition organization, being indicative of the USAF's wargames with allied nations that involves the use of aggressor squadrons using enemy hardware or US hardware painted to look like the enemy. Another hint that they're a red herring as an enemy?

Any speculation as to what the siren chick's limitation is? She mentioned she had one, but I don't recall it ever actually coming into play. I imagine it's more than eye contact (especially since we saw her initiate it without eye contact on the Luke Cage wannabe).

she couldn't do it on that one hotel security guy

I like the show so far. I like that they drive boring old cars, except the Bentley, but there's a perfect story reason for it :D
their office looks absolutely normal, not some super headquarters like on CSI-NCIS-ABCDEFG
it looks like a real office, with messy breakroom tables, and network cord hanging from the ceiling :p
though . . . maybe that'll change since this was only the pilot

I also got the impression that even though it's set in NYC, they filmed in LA or Vancouver

This show wasn't even on my radar, but after finding out that David Strathairn is in it, I'm gonna check it out. Laura Mennell is in it too, so that's a plus.

Based on what little I know, I'm guessing Vancouver.

Her powers didn't work on everyone (the security guard wasn't falling for it), but I doubt that would be the limitation itself.

Perhaps in using her powers of suggestion she leaves herself open to the people she controls having a lingering mental link that gives them the means to control her later on, which might expose the team to danger. Usually she doesn't remain around people long enough for them to find out, but now that's she's used it on two team members that weakness may become apparent. A recurring villain might discover and exploit the weakness as well.

Alternatively, a more angsty weakness could be simply that mind control becomes extremely addictive, and she constantly has to struggle against the urge to use it to get what she wants.

I am watching the Pilot right now. It looks like a cross between House's team and the X-Men. I like the Doctor a lot, and it's fun to look at Nina, but none of these characters are standing out. The kid is just annoying. I want to hear more about the Red Flag. There's a lot of the dark side of these powers to be explored. I do like that these are ordinary people and we're not trying to be heroes. They are just doing their jobs. But this show will have to improve (Wolfe and Behr will keep me around awhile) for me to continue watching.

To me, the reason for that seemed to be because he had some headphones in and didn't hear her clearly. Instead of wasting time trying to 'charm' him, she just went with the guy she already charmed because it would be faster, not because this guy was immune.
