All the Sehlats are Dead!

For that matter, think of all the targs that are probably dead because of Nero. I'm sure there were probably a few at Rura Penthe. And for all we know, a few captains of the 47 Klingon ships destroyed by the Space Octopus probably had their pet targs on the bridge, like Kruge did in Trek III.

In the Sequel, Kirk and company will travel back to 1986 Vulcan on a humorous mission to bring back a pair of Sehlats. Hey, it's new to them.

Even if there are Sehlats on other planets, would there be enough to keep populating them past the next few generations? Once a population reaches a critical low, they are extinct for practical purposes because there is not enough variety genetically to keep the species alive. I'm willing to guess that unless someone does some fantastic genetic engineering, Sehlats are no more.

That first ManBearPigYeti that got eaten by the CloverfieldSnowLobster on NotThatDeltaVega sort of looked like a hybrid of the Klingon SabretoothAbominableSnowDogs from Rura Penthe and Sehlats.

Maybe the Vulcans and Klingons had some weird ice planet crossbreeding program going on. Because you can never have enough giant vicious snow beasts. That's my motto, at least.

I'm sure that there are a number of breeding pairs in zoos around the UFP. There are also bound to be a few embryos kept frozen in various scientific institutes throughout the UFP as well. Perhaps the Romulans too some with them during that great schism.

Shit! I'm not even buying that there are only 10k Vulcans left. That's just a moronic nunmber considering that the Vulcans have had warp technology for 2000 years and a number of colonies. Even the USA has about 30k government officials, and about 150k professional workers overseas, and we only have a population of 300million. Vulcans are the intellectual masterminds in the UFP. Even without colonies when one considers the size of the UFP, Starfleet and the various ex-pats that would be on the 150 or so planets of the Federation, there has to be no less than a million Vulcans out there (even that's a conservative number).

Better start havin' babies!

Where's President Roslin when you need her.

For that matter, what about every other kind of life form on Vulcan? There must be more to the ecosystem than one furry, teddybear-type animal.

The writers have actually answered a question about this. The 10,000 figure is people who were able to evacuate at the time of the destruction and doesn't count colonies, fleets, etc.

Really!!! That's awesome.

I posited this notion. If you (and I'm sure you have) listen to Beta Spock's words he said, "...By my estimates only around 10,000 survived the destruction of Vulcan..." Which only refers to those people presently on Vulcan.

Wow. Plot hole closed. I know this sounds nit-picky, but that one hole really bugged the hell out of me.

[Where can I see the writers' answers?]

32 males, 32 females, you can actually tweak the numbers a bit if you shift the male female ratio, but, that's how many you need to start a "new" population

are you listening neitzche worshippers?

And that's excluding the various stored genetic material that there would surely be in various scientific institutes around the UFP. Certainly enough to start a new diaspora on another world. Besides, these little rodents were important to Vulcans. They would have undoubtedly taken them to their various colonial worlds.

But I've read that tigers are now an extremely endangered species even though there are still several thousand of them. It is believed they are headed for extinction, and some people are uncertain whether there is any possibility of survival for tigers at this point.

Even when you consider that Sehlats wouldn't be poached and they would be given adequate resources to survive (unlike the fate of tigers), it still seems a stretch to say that the population can actually be rebuilt with that few. Is that even enough to avoid inbreeding?
