All Hands Abandon Ship

How would you react in an abandon ship situation?

In relativity, Janeway tells all hands to abandon ship.

The bridge crew, of course, completely ignore this. Is that standard procedure? Once you become a bridge officer, do you have to accept that you lose certain priveleges and must put yourself in harms way? Like in the West Wing when Josh is taken aside and given his secret bunker card (but in reverse).

Once you become a bridge officer, do you get some extra training to deal with self-destruct/abandon ship scenarios?

What would you do if you were some deck 11 crew member caught in an abandon ship situation?

So do the crew members who happen to be women engage other women in hand to hand combat for a seat on a pod? ;)

I would think they go through training scenarios for this. If the captain says get out...you get out. I seem to faintly recall episodes where crew members stayed behind who were not supposed to. They were supposed to leave but disobeyed orders.

I bet Janeway orders all hands off the ship when she wants the place to herself for an evening.

I just watched that very West Wing episode not 20 minutes ago!

:bolian:

I would stay at whatever post I was required to stay in, and/or, help others if I was able.

Then I would defecate.

I would imagine they do, but not the "you must stay at your post" kind. What makes more sense to me would be if bridge officers had specific assignments and duties in such a scenario that Ensign X on deck 11 wouldn't. Someone has to lead and organize the evacuation efforts, and I would think those would be the same people (for the most part) leading the ship in non-self-descruct scenarios.

What surprises me is the whole implicit attitude that "we must stay with the captain and go down with the ship too." I would think after an abandon ship order, everyone would start securing their stations, or just flat out leave to go to their emergency assignments, not just sit there.

It's just puzzling. Follow orders, and start abandoning ship - whether that means literally leave, or go to some other known duty assignment for this sort of event. If the Captain wants you to stay, she'll tell you to stay.

Reminds me of Deadlock. She tells Harry to leave with the baby, and his first reaction is to stand there looking dumbstruck - like, "What do you mean, leave?! I can't leave!"

Just follow orders and go!

I'd start hauling my butt to my assigned escape pod ASAP. If I came across someone who needed help that I felt I could, I'd like to think I would do so out of moral obligation, but aside from that - it's time to check out of there.

No one here likes kids, apparently. LOL. I voted the last one because I'm assuming we're talking about Voyager. The ship will be spotless with a full crew compliment by next Wednesday.

I'd say Meh, but then it'd be the day the ship blows up and I'll die. So I'll help the children.

It amuses me it's "women and children" and not "civilians", being a decent human being doesn't mean imposing sexist, ageist and alienist (for all those species that don't fall into our dual-gender idea of anatomy) labels on an emergency situation

I'd assume everyone was well versed in the evac procedure and know where they had to go and what they had to do, so I'd make sure I got off. If someone happened to ask for assistance I would offer but not just because they were a lady or youngling.

Galaxy Quest confirmed that the countdown always stops at 00:1 so you'll be fine.

So to be a decent, (yet tediously politically correct) human being, I should beat the men, aliens and the elderly with a bat too?

Fine by me. Hell, I'd kick Naomi Wildman in the face if it meant getting to that escape pod first.

^ Assuming you're not serving on the USS Titanic, I would tend to think that Starfleet designs their ships with enough evac capacity for everyone aboard. Why do you need to be first?

So if you're in a pitched firefight, with say the Vidiians, and it's going pretty badly causing Janeway to order an evacuation do you do it and take your chance at life? Think I'd rather be incinerated by the core breach.

Because explosions lack manners and often refuse to wait until everyone has safely escaped before they elect to scatter your limbs over a large area. Time is of the essence. Plus, I have beautiful things to offer the world. I'm clearly more important than everyone else. My marionette-based erotic short stories alone justify my urgent need to be saved.

Since you're literotica takes priority over saving people such as myself, please do me the courtesy that if I fall behind and beg for help, that's my code word for shoot me with a phaser rifle. Much appreciated. Oh and one more thing, say that you love me before you vaporize me. LOL! It has to be dramatic and angsty you see.

 But by that logic, all that bat-beating would just slow you down. If you just worked on your sprinting and dodging skills, you'll be fine!

(And remind me to never be in the same building as you during an evacuation! :p)

I'm guessing the escape pods are near to the ships exterior (though I suppose it's possible that they might be deeper within the ship and have an unblocked route out of the ship).

But near the exterior makes more sense so maybe that's why bridge crew all have quarters in those prime exterior locations.

I seem to recall that Kim's quarters were the only ones without windows. Poor Harry.

Not just Harry. Belanna, Kes, Paris had the same (same set different furnishings) I recall Neelix had a port hole lol. And those lower deck people had not only zero windows but had to bunk. WHY after so many have died so far is unknown.

Could have sworn Tom and B'elanna had windows. They didn't get an upgrade after they started sharing?

But Neelix gets a window!
