I recently watched all of DS9 again, and this time I decided I'd attempt to make a ranking of every episode as I went along. As I went along, realizing how hard it is to remain objective when doing something like this (I tried to avoid sentimentality and consider certain aspects like the impact certain eps had on the series or franchise rather than make just a personal favorites list), I made peace with the fact that a list like this is not something to be taken too seriously.

So for anyone interested, here's my final list from best to worst:

Dang, you put Valiant pretty high on that list. That's an episode I would pick for one of the worst slots (maybe 171 or 172). I'll agree that Let He Who Is Without Sin... is the absolute worst.

And, what's wrong with Empok Nor and Civil Defense? I thought those were pretty good episodes.

We get to learn more about Cardassian society, Garak has some good moments, and for once I get to see a version of Casablanca that sort of makes sense )

The ones I'd put lower include The Changing Face of Evil, Shadows and Symbols (Sisko's Prophet-mom? No. Just no), Crossover (it's good for a DS9 MU episode, but there are still things about it that bother me and it doesn't deserve to be in the top 25), The Way of the Warrior (a bit overrated), Invasive Procedures (Facets and Equilibrium were more interesting as far as Dax episodes go), Honor Among Thieves (it's OK, but top 50?), Rapture (it's good, but not top 15 good)... I also wouldn't put The Visitor at #2, it's not that it isn't a great episode, but it's a bit like The City on the Edge of Forever of DS9, everyone makes it out to be so awesome and the best ever that I wonder why I wasn't moved more by it.

And, what's wrong with Empok Nor and Civil Defense? I thought those were pretty good episodes.

Its funny, I never remembered Civil Defense as that bad. But this time around watching it, it bored me to death for some reason. I didnt think it was necessarily bad, but man, it did not interest me. I think I saw it as kind of a wasted opportunity too as far as having both Garak and Dukat involved. Just did nothing for me.

Lets see...trying to remember some of the reasoning behind some placements for some eps you mentioned...
"Emissary" I thought dragged a little in the second hour, even though the first hour I loved.
"For The Cause" just brought the Eddington thing on a bit too randomly. I liked the episode and I like the Eddington arc, but it kinda came out of nowhere.
I actually thought I ranked "To The Death" higher than anyone else would've! I loved that episode, and it never seemed to get much appreciation. Glad you're a fan too!
"Profit And Loss" I actually did like, until the scene where Natima shoots Quark and then decides to express her undying love for him- that scene just brought the show to a screeching halt.

Some I'd rank higher: Second Skin, Hippocratic Oath, Facets, Civil Defense, Visionary.

Some I'd put lower down: Waltz, Captive Pursuit

"Facets" I didn't buy at all cuz I didn't think it was plausible that Curzon could hide his love for Jadzia even when she had all his memories. I couldn't get past that.
I was expecting "Visionary" to be real good cuz this was the first time I'd seen it all the way through, but it left me kind of lukewarm.

My list would be way, way different.

I definitely wouldn't put Duet or The Visitor or Trials and Tribble-ations anywhere near the top 10. Rapture wouldn't be anywhere near the top 50.

Empok Nor, Body Parts, Bar Association would definitely be in my the top 25 whereas you have them near the bottom of the list (under Melora and Time's Orphan?...which are both among bottom 10 episodes of the series ).

I do agree with ranking Rocks and Shoals very high. And Chimera - which is a brilliant episode that largely goes overlooked (the only time it ever gets brought up as far as I can tell is to ask the never-ending question, "Did Laas die from the genocide disease?" )

I also agree that ITPM is the very best episode, and it is also the best episode ever in all of Trek.

You were right.



On a serious note, while I love Nor the Battle from a personal view, in a general ranking, it didn't have as huge an impact on the show as say ItPM or Duet. In this sort of ranking, I'd put it around 15. And that's as generous and fair as I'll get. However, even in a general ranking, I would never put Rapture, Inter Arma, Captive Pursuit, Children of Time or The Ship above my favourite.

I am outraged that Meridian placed so high.

"Improbable Cause" didn't hit me as hard as "The Die Is Cast". Undoubtedly an amazing episode, but it was all about the dialogue whereas "Die" had equally awesome dialogue, plus great action and a fantastic payoff overall.

"Past Tense II" was actually higher on my list, that's a typo. Again, part 1 was fantastic, but was alot of buildup mainly. Part 2 I found to be amazingly badass, really did a ton for both Sisko and Bashir's characters.

"The Ship" was one of those episodes that I ended up judging based almost solely on the emotional impact it had on me. When an episode can move me to tears, I really feel like they did something right and it makes me biased towards the ep even if I couldn't in all fairness say it was better than others.

"Invasive Procedures" I knew would ruffle some feathers- it's never really been vied as a standout ep, I dont think. But something about it really grabbed me this time around. Something about the tone was so dark and gritty.

After "The Homecoming", "The Circle" was a disappointment. I feel like they really didn't cover as much ground as they couldve at times while watching it, and after "The Siege", I almost felt as if it couldve been a two-parter instead of a three-parter.

Finally, some love for "Fascination"! I went into that ep expecting it to be at the bottom from what I remembered of it, and I ended up laughing quite a bit. I think if you don't take it too seriously (which Im pretty sure the writers weren't either), you'll get some entertainment value from it.


Another good thing to keep in mind is that just cuz an episode is low, doesnt mean I thought it was bad. I actually really enjoyed "If Wishes Were Horses", 'The Forsaken", "Move Along Home", and others that ended up lower. They just couldn't compete with DS9 when it was in good form.

Very interesting. Maybe I'll try and compile my list for comparison. My problem is that I rank episodes on a scale of 1-10, so many episodes have the same score. I'll have to try and put those in an order.

I'm sure many would be shocked out how high Move Along Home would be on my list...

I knew I forgot something, I didn't mention The House of Quark, did I? That episode is awesome, it should be much, much higher. While I am not generally a fan of Ferengi episodes, Little Green Men and The Magnificent Gerengi were actually very funny, shoulkd also be higher.

Also Indiscretion, that was also a very good episode; Return to Grace is better, but Indiscretion is also good.

In the top part of the list, Favor the Bold/Sacrifice of Angels should be much higher, it's top 10/top 20 material. The whole Dominion occupation arc was great, I am surprised that the episodes are so low, apart from Rocks and Shoals (which was indeed great). I also think that Not the Battle to the Strong was awesome, and I'd probably put it higher than 25.

OTOH, in case you missed the previous 100 times I said it, I despise Fascination and it would certainly be in my bottom 5.

I had rated all the episodes, but never put them in a list like this before. It was challenging, especially when I finished and realized I had missed ONE episode. It was a real pain in the ass to figure out which one it was!

Notice that 1-71 are all 9/10 or higher, so really can be pretty interchangeable on just about any given day.

The first episode in a scoring category is in bold, and every episode below that one had the same score until the next episode in bold.

I even put out to the side of each one the differential between my ranking and yours (+34 = I ranked it 34 spots higher than you did).

Well the score I gave Past Tense puts it in the "OK" category, so I really didn't hate it. I'm very partial to DS9, and Valiant is the only episode I would call "bad".

Anyway, thanks for posting your list. It gave me something fun to do for 5 hours.
