alien languages

At least for me, one of the most enjoyable aspects of Enterprise was getting to listen to various crew members speak all the different languages and not just chalk up the fact that everyone is speaking english to the UT. One highlight that sticks out in my mind is the episode "Two days and Two nights" where Hoshi carries on a conversation with a couple and then with a man she meets entirely in Risan, with the english in subtitles. There are also numerous examples of T'Pol speaking Vulcan, Phlox speaking Denobulan, the list goes on. For me, listening to the various languages as Enterprise encountered new worlds really added a sense that they were visiting strange and alien cultures (even if the aliens ended up looking surprisingly human;)) Anybody else enjoy the languages? Were there any languages in particular that you liked or any that you wished you had heard?

Now that you mention it, yes. It is nice to hear something besides Klingon. I like the language in Vox Sola.

I'm glad they addressed the issue; for example, today I was watching Anomaly, and it was interesting that Hoshi recognized the Xindi database by its appearance. However, even though Linda Park worked very hard at pronouncing all the ostensible alien languages they gave her in the script, she really only has one accent that she uses for all of them. I've studied four languages besides English, and for me her accent as Hoshi was unconvincing. But I ignored that after a while and just went with the flow.

I would like to have seen Hoshi put to more use ... I realize it would have been cumbersome to do it all the time, but just having her have to step in and help bridge the communication gap would have been nice.

I realized Hoshi was obsolete when in "Precious" Cargo she gave Trip a UT.

The only alien words Hoshi needs to know are: "Gort, Klaatu barado nikto."

One of my favourite scenes is in Civilisation when Hoshi is on the bridge and she's literally giggling with excitement while listening to all the different alien languages she's picking up from the planet.

Yes this is one of the things that seperates ENT from the other shows.

It has however been my observation that almost all languages sound the same.

I'm just working my way through season 1 at the moment, and I agree that one of the nice touches is not being able to talk to aliens straight away. The use of Hoshi has been quite good so far, but I've never seen past season 1. Does her role diminish?

I liked it when her and Phlox were having a conversation in Denobulan in 'Dear Doctor;' it was a really nice scene.
