Alex Kurtzman Gets New Deal With CBS, Will Expand 'Star Trek' TV

It is my second favorite Star Trek movie behind TMP. There was a lot to build a sequel off of, and Paramount got cold feet over a hundred fans voting it the worst Trek movie. Per usual, Paramount is its own worst enemy when it comes to Star Trek.

It's my second favorite, too (though my first is TWoK). STiD is a splendid success in virtually every particular, and a pure joy to watch. It makes me sad that fandom's Internet groupthink cynically chose to dogpile it and declare it the worst thing ever, when they should have been alternately dancing in the streets and prostrating themselves in gratitude.

See I love TMP as well. It’s one of the only ones (except IV) that I think has a more centrally Star Trek type story (“there’s a thing out there” “it’s coming at us we need to communicate with it” so Spock does a mind meld - basically the same in both TMP and TVH!) although they don’t seek out the new life form, it comes to them - but TMP is a solid Star Trek story at its core.

I could go on about why I don’t like STID but it’s flogging a dead horse at this point and you’re right - paramount is its own worst enemy where Trek is concerned. Who knows, if they’d made a proper follow up to darkness (whence Carol Marcus is one of my only issues with beyond) then maybe DSC would have taken a different form. I might even have liked it.

Ah well, maybe I’ll enjoy the starfleet academy show or the Khan show or the animated tribble series or the sitcom featuring Harry Mudd and Stella or the high concept show following the exploits of a Calamarain energy cloud.

I would actually watch the Harry Mudd show if they made it now that I think about it haha!

Beyond reminds me of the TNG movies in that it never has the feel of consequence of the better TOS movies. I had kinda forgotten that they destroyed the Enterprise -- that's happened so much, and the Abramsprise was so new, that it didn't make much impact on me.

Beyond didn't strike me as a bad movie, but it followed the modern Bond template too closely for me to love it as a Trek film.

@Serveaux, common, now is not the time to be pessimistic. When new shows are announced, is perfect time for optimism. When first trailers hit, doubt is allowed to creep in. When Season 1 of each show drops, that's when pessimism, aka realism, is actually allowed.
Before the shows air, we can all hope/wish they will be great. We'll have plenty of time to be disappointed later.

I've debated with him enough times over the years to know none of what's described is anything he wants. Different strokes for different folks. I just hope he can try to move on gracefully.

Well, it’s as close as we have to an announcement.

And we're closer than ever to cold fusion.

TOS is my all-time favorite show, and I enjoy much of the spin-offs. I DVRed a VOY episode just today ("The Omega Directive") to post for rewatching in the background at some point in the near future. I'm excited at the prospect of new Star Trek. But this announcement does not carry the promise that it's on its way, much less the assurance that it will be worthwhile.

Here's hoping for the best, though!
