Alex Kurtzman Gets New Deal With CBS, Will Expand 'Star Trek' TV

By the sound of it they’re avoiding the saturation issue by putting out different products.

Picard series has a different appeal to an academy series full of teens, likewise an animated series. The other two are looking to be mini series too.

Have to say though, Academy series doesn’t inspire me. What’s life like for over-achieving teens living in a permissive diverse society with no real problems? Don’t care.

CBS throwing Trek under the bus to keep its fledgling service alive until it can scrape together a larger portion of the market share doesn't bode well for the long-term future of the franchise
Possibly. But, that's the market trend and CBS would be remiss if they didn't try.

No doubt Netflix will bite if they decide against All Access.

I enjoyed the books

That train already left the station, don't you think? Once Trek was exiled to a backwater streaming service, it was clear where CBS' priorities were. Certainly not with growing the fan base for Trek.

I do worry that if All Access takes off, CBS will become increasingly unwilling to pay Star Trek's high-dollar price tag. The value ratio changes if they aren't desperate to inflate the subscriber numbers.

I initially didn't wanted to read them because they were YA novels but I checked out the first Kelvin SA novel and I rather liked it. And yes, I recognise the irony that I fall into the target group of YA novels.

The idea must have sounded a lot more interesting when we'd seen less of the academy. After TNG and the first Abrams film, I can't say I'm keen for more. But who knows, maybe they'll come up with some interesting twists.

I'm definitely not in favor of a Starfleet Academy TV show. It might be nice to know what Kelvin Kirk was up to before cheating at the Kobayashi Maru but I don't really have the desire to follow some random cadets.

You know they'd invent some Burnham-style background drama for it. Imagine if that episode where Wesley's classmate was killed was spread out as a season arc (or, heaven forbid, series premise). :ack:

This is all interesting. I will get more exited when things become more concrete and specific series and showrunners are announced.

TNG, DS9, VOY reunion miniseries does sound interesting if they can pull it off before the actors get too old.

But I don't expect long running series (7 seasons) any more.

I'm all for multiple Trek series at once. I didn't experience burnout with the franchise until Enterprise, and even then only completely during the third series. (I was very much still pining for more 24th century Trek)

Also, I really do hope for one of these to be Picard related. Please :angel:Please:angel:Please:angel:.

It would live or die on the writing but I'm not confident about an academy series. I can't see the advantage of it over doing a grown up focused show, but can see lots of drawbacks.

It might make sense as something for young fans to graduate into after the animated series, assuming the animated series is appropriate for kids. Or they could go the opposite way and give us Star Trek: Riverdale.

In theory I can imagine a Buffy or Class type show set in the Star Trek universe, where young people deal with strange happenings at the Academy, but the part I'm struggling with is why the real officers wouldn't just step in and deal with whatever it is. Buffy and Class both had a conceit that the grown up world didn't know about or believe what they were dealing with, but Starfleet probably noticed aliens exist.

When I was in high school, there was a Marvel Comics Star Trek series called Starfleet Academy that I used to read. If they did a show along those lines, I'd really look forward to that.
