Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin Interview (Short Treks and Season 2)

Yes the article reads ...On the topic of Ethan Peck’s performance as Spock in the upcoming storyline, Kurtzman reiterated that this will be a previously-unseen level of maturity in the character.

Yeah, but it is not a quote from Kurtzman. It is just the writer's way of summarizing what was said to set up the actual quote. They made some strange word choices, and here we are.

But ignore that, and all the actual Kurtzman quotes are perfectly consistent.

I will say this -- in every interview with Berg & Harberts, they had that flashing neon sign hovering over them that said "WE ARE IN WAY OVER OUR HEADS!!!!" It's no guarantee of anything, but this Kurtzman interview at least reads more like someone who knows what they're doing! That makes me hopeful.

Yeah :) Hopeful is good.

TYPING LIKE THIS IS KIND OF FUN.
It's the "Man Who Bought a Packard Bell in 1997 And Just Discovered Chat Rooms on his AOL THINGY" font. Also seen a lot on newsgroups in that era, and used for many years in the stalwart hope of alerting all one's loved ones, neighbors, and anyone they'd ever virtually encountered of a fake virus warning.

I know that. I wasn't talking about episodes but seasons.
I would expect CBS will judge how they were 'viewed' by the audience (in more ways than one) before deciding if they want to do more 'Short Treks' in between seasons.

I would also imagine it will tie into whether they do 'Short Treks' for the other Star Trek series they are in the process of starting up/producing.

It's only been one of four episodes so far. They probably want more data too.

SPOCK WILL GO FROM TALKING IN ALL CAPITALS LIKE WOLF BLITZER ON CNN to talking more like a regular person and not smiling.

That's the transition Spock will have to go through FROM BEING SPOCK FROM "THE CAGE" to being Spock from rest of the original series.

This, unfortunately, is the sort of "character development" these people have in mind.

Well I'm still speculating and gleaning... but quite possibly like most twenty-somethings experience :techman: I wonder if the hints about spirituality and religion being themed with science might play out within Spock himself. It's not a bad concept to have someone so logical having a spiritual 'awakening' or the opposite, someone religious discovering an appreciation for science.

On the topic about speculating. Putting Spirituality, seven, angles into my brain pulls up this old song by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson.

Could this be something the writers pulled inspiration from?

Interesting reconciling Kurtzman suggesting Spock will portray "a previously-unseen level of maturity in character" with the rest of the quote explaining he will be in a state of confusion. His Vulcan logic and human emotions - failing him. Huh? Wait and see.

No, it's consistent. A "previously unseen level" does not imply a more mature level, just a different level than what we've seen. That different level can well be a lower level of maturity--and that's what it sounds like it will be in terms of logic.

"I am very excited about Spock this season because this is literally the only season in which we can tell this story about Spock."

So the rumoured 20 year time jump at the end of this season is going to happen?

I hadn't heard that rumor. Is there a link?

Interesting comment about Spock. I do think they should wrap up the pike/spock/enterprise storyline this season.

NOOOOOOOO. If Discovery jumps 20 years into the future, it means they will be forced to wear the worst starfleet uniforms ever conceived.

Because we all know the costume department won't even think of making any changes to what has been established on screen!
