Akiva Goldsman kinda craps on Discovery...

I see no issue at all in gearing different series towards different audiences. And frankly it makes sense to direct the first show towards the most recent and financially successful Star Trek adventures. Pointing out the differences is certainly not “crapping on.” That is being dramatic for sure.

It’s the same point as Kurtzman was making in respect of Discovery being a “bullet” and Picard being more contemplative.

Not a criticism of either, just highlighting the different styles.

The first half of Disco S2 didn’t have that much action; the distinction was more a fast narrative pace.

Incidentally, TOS was described as “sci-fi action adventure”. TNG had a slower pace in comparison. I don’t think it’d be “crapping” on the former to point that out.

I don’t think the writing in PIC is any better than DSC, especially after seeing only the first two episodes. I think that Patrick Stewart’s masterful acting might be making some folks think the writing is better.

Great acting many times can elevate bad or average writing, though I’m not saying PIC has had bad or average writing, so far.

It's hard to gauge after only two episodes, but I like both series about just as much as of present.

I gave DSC S1 an average of 8.43, DSC S2 an average of 8.57, and the first two episodes of PIC S1 an average of 8.5. That's basically dead-even in terms of how much I like them so far.

I don't think he was craping on Discovery but I can see how it might be seen that way if your taking the action description as saying action in the show is more important than the characters and story. Basically the Michael Bay idea on a action.

I saw that rumor. Hoping for some confirmation soon. I hear Ethan has a busy schedule for the next few months.

I think the Captain Pike series won't start shooting until the second half of this year, probably after Section31/Windcleaver.

I don't even think "lots of stuff blowing up" is a fair discription of Discovery. Certain episodes have had a high action quotient, but in the second season we didn't see real ship-to-ship combat until the last episode. If anything, I think the level of melodrama makes Discovery more distinctive.

I still don't understand how he can make a "more writing based" comment without that implying the writing on Discovery isn't very important though.

With the idea that the Section 31 series takes place in the Pike era, I would fully expect the Enterprise and crew to play a role in season 1 to some extent. The Discoprise and her bridge needs to be put to more use.

Goldsman might not have meant it to come out this way, but his compare/contrast between Discovery and Picard made it sound like he doesn't believe Discovery is a "serious show" and isn't about the quality of performances - or the writing level - just about action and "things blowing up."

He's just noting they are two different types of shows.
