Airplane Travel

They make you take off your shoes???:wtf::wtf::wtf:

Yeah. Some guy had a shoe bomb on a plane ONCE that he failed to detonate. The logical reaction is that everyone takes off their shoes and gets them scanned for bombs.

The party line is also that shoes can be used to conceal items, but it's ridiculous none the less.

Some guy ONCE had some-kind-of explosive in a coke bottle. Naturally the logical reaction was to disallow anyone from carrying aboard containers containing liquids over a certain ammounts. So don't go on board a plane with anything more than a travel-sized tube of toothpaste.

It was only an outline of a plot and the science has since shown that the assumptions were faulty - a binary explosive can't be mixed in an airplane lav.

I have written on my plastic bag for all that stuff "KHIAI" - Kip Hawley (TSA Administrator) is an idiot". I get chuckles from the TSOs when they see it.

God, I miss BA. They offer alcohol almost left right and center, spirits AND wine... lovely. :D :p

This is actually one the main reasons I like to fly BA too (that, and they don't completely treat you like dirt because you have the temerity to want to fly somewhere).

Another tip - most airlines now charge to check bags, even a single bag cost $15 each way on most carriers, the second is $25 each way and the third is $50. The only major airline that has resisted this is Southwest.

So be prepared to pay a fee at the airport to check bags. And if you think you'll just carry your stuff on, think again - the airlines have begun cracking down like Nazis on people who break the carryon rules. That means one small bag for the overhead compartment and one even smaller bag that can fit under your seat.

Also, if you are carrying bags on, make sure you're at the head of the line, because the overhead bins now fill up very fast, so you may have to gate-check your bags. If you're connecting, that means the chances of your bag getting lost is increased dramatically.

On a related note, did ya know you can carry box cutters on board now?

You know...box cutters...those things that have no purpose on a plain except to successfully hijack 4 planes and crash them on 9/11.

But we still have to take our shoes off.

... You're kidding, right?

Might not be a binary bomb but a bomb made of liquids smuggled on board was detenoated about Philippines Airlines Flight 434 in 1994. It was on Air Crash Investigations and there's a wiki entry for it.

Even if they didn't want you to take your shoes off, I still have to take mine off anyway - the orthotic insoles set off the metal detectors. :(

True story: back in September, I was coming back from Atlanta and I pulled out the little baggie that I keep the cleaning solution for my glasses in. The two TSA employees at the desk where they give you the bags got all wide-eyed and said, "We stopped using those bags three years ago!" and insisted on autographing it.

I always try to get to the airport at least two hours before my flight even if I don't strictly have to, just because I'm always convinced that there's going to be a long line and it'll take me forever to get to my gate. Last time I flew, to Washington about six weeks ago, I got through check-in and security and arrived at my gate in 35 minutes. Mind you, I think I was flying very early in the morning, so I guess it depends on the time of day.

For my next flight, in about two months, I'm planning on taking the bus to Buffalo and flying to Chattanooga from there (it'll save me about $150), so the scheduling might get a bit tricky. I really don't want to have to be down at the bus terminal for 7 in the morning (I don't usually get up that early ), but it's looking like it's the only way of making sure that I get to the Buffalo airport in time for the only flight that'll get me there at a decent hour. Getting home might be even trickier, though...

But the worse part is when some-one has high boots on and they are asked to take them off.

Met a woman once who found that out the hard way. She was flying to Canada and Air Canada when using the 767 has refuel stop in Hawaii so she had to go through U.S customs etc.

Well she'd choosen to wear calf high, lace up boots for the flight (dunno why) and she caused a bit of delay trying to get them off.

Depends on the airline. I've never encountered this on Jetblue, Delta, Southwest, US Air, or Continental.

Might want to look into this again, Squiggy. USAirways (US Air's new name) was the first to do this. They did it at about the same time that they did the $15 first checked bag fee and got into it in the press with the ALPA over how much fuel the captain's were insiting on having onboard the aircraft.

Roger, Rodger. What's your vector, Victor?

You have clearance, over.

That's Clarence Oveur, over.

Didn't you serve under Oveur in the Air Force?

He was Oveur Unger and I was under Dunn.

I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
