Airplane Travel

Maybe. But I hear a lot more about luggage theft than I do about theft from UPS and similar carriers

LAX Theft ring

Miami Theft

What I suspect, is that a TSA officer seeing a large concentration of books and comics in luggage might be tempted to investigate further. Why not remove that temptation entirely?

FWIW, I've made nearly 50 round trips this year and the only time I've checked luggage was when I was on crutches. Nothing would go into my checked luggage that had any value.

And books and comics weigh a lot for their volume. Why not ship them and not have to lug them through the airport?

I travel with some regularity (4-6 times a year) and I've never had anything stolen.

Although when flying to a tiny airport, my bags are almost always lost and then show up on a later flight....

Fortune favors the clueless... I just looked at the locks my GF uses and they say "TSA" on them so I guess these are the TSA-approved locks.

Come to think of it, I could just round up what I want to bring, toss it in a box and go to the post office down there and mail it to myself. I was just thinking that I would save money by not shipping it.

---Do they still make you take off your shoes? I remember they did that the last time I flew.
Yes.
Funny story: I was about to board a plane when the metal detector beeped and I was manually scanned; the guy asked me why I was wearing safety boots and I told him I didn't know they were, they were just my boots…
Two planes later I landed in Orlando and again a metal detector beeped when I passed through. This time I was told to take them off and put them through the x-ray machine

ALWAYS lock your luggage, that's just like ya know, common sense.
IFAIK it's been made illegal to actually lock suitcases.

By "safety boots" I assume you mean steel-caps?

I've flown maybe once in the last 10 years, and I didn't know about the luggage lock thing. What about luggage that has built-in locks? They can't exactly cut those off.

They make you take off your shoes???:wtf::wtf::wtf:

Yeah. Some guy had a shoe bomb on a plane ONCE that he failed to detonate. The logical reaction is that everyone takes off their shoes and gets them scanned for bombs.

Some guy ONCE had some-kind-of explosive in a coke bottle. Naturally the logical reaction was to disallow anyone from carrying aboard containers containing liquids over a certain ammounts. So don't go on board a plane with anything more than a travel-sized tube of toothpaste.

If the suitcase is closed AND locked it might be broken when(/if) you see it next…

I don't check bags. I carry all my stuff on the plane with me.

And I make sure and remember that the white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only, and there is no stopping in the red zone. ;)

^Oh, come on now: we all know that it isn't really about where loading and unloading of passengers are allowed. :guffaw: :bolian:

Honestly, it's not as big a deal as some people make it out to be. You just dump everything (pockets, jacket, shoes) into one of those bins, then put your laptop in another one, and walk through. Takes about 45 seconds at most if there's no line.

I usually use the bag's own internal number lock. There are no written regulations about locks in the UK, plenty of bags I see are locked with huge locks - over the top of course, basically like saying: "come steal me, I'm valuable!". Belts and jackets have to come off usually, sometimes shoes too - so don't wear anything with too many laces and fiddly bits or you'll get annoyed. They usually ask for pockets to be emptied so the contents can be scanned, if you have cash notes in your pocket, keep it on your person as it won't activate the alarm, I wouldn't risk putting money on the belt when you cannot keep your eye on it.

If you are a nervous flyer, most airlines serve alcohol even on short flights, so you can easily entertain yourself by availing yourself of the fun basket... God, I miss BA. They offer alcohol almost left right and center, spirits AND wine... lovely. :D :p

Before I clicked on the thread, I knew it would dissolve into Airplane! jokes.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking! And don't call me Shirley.
