Advance screening/World Premiere discussions [the NO-SPOILERS version]

Re: Advance screening/World Premiere discussions [the NO-SPOILERS vers

At first I thought it would be pretty hard for me to avoid spoilers but I've read spoilers for Doctor Who during last season and it really diminished my enjoyment of some episodes somewhat. And then, in one episode the Doctor actually says something like spoilers taking the fun out of it (there's a diary in that episode that contains events happening in his future). Well, I took this to heart. :) I think it will be much more fun this way.

LOL.

I always use that philosophy.

Great episode, one of my faves of last season.

Still mixed about Planet of the Dead though, havnt headed for the Who forum yet. Getting there though so ill see you in there.

Ive avoided it so far, and will until release, so i wont be going in there.

Ive been spoiled for Who last year and year before that and a few major movies recently and ive had enough of it. I'd rather go in and see Trek with awe, after seeing the clip from the shuttle where Urban channels De Kelley im looking forward to his performance just for that fact.

Other than that, the trailers and those two clips is enough.

"Spilers, Darling" ;)

Here's photos and an article on the advance screening for the troops in Kuwait.

Loved this!
Chief Warrant Officer Earl Hemminger, Regional Computer Emergency Response team, Virginia National guard, asked actor Zachary Quinto, who played Spock in the film, to speak to his daughter Katherine, who is a very big fan.

"Your dad told me to say this was hotness," laughed Quinto as he greeted Katherine via cell phone.

You'll need to be logged in to see them without the watermarks. Clicking in, like I just did, the watermarks are plainly visible, but not obnoxious.

My dad was right- I should have joined the military.

I'm loving the V-Salute!!

makes me think, why don't we have a Vulcan Salute smiley here, huh?
I think there may have been an attempt at one among the smilies Anti-Drone made, but detail becomes a problem working in small (25x25) image dimensions and, ultimately, Bonz was only willing to add a few, so she picked what she thought were the best of them, including :vulcan:, :cardie:, :rommie: and :klingon:.

Re: Advance screening/World Premiere discussions [the NO-SPOILERS vers

JJ Abrams interview done in Dubai. He talks about Nimoy, Trek and filming "something" in Dubai.

Edit: This was posted on twitter a while ago, but I never got around to listen to it until this morning. Pine/Quinto talking on Aussie radio. The announcers mention Trek Today!

2nd Edit: a review from a soldier who saw the movie twice! There are some (minor) spoilers, even though the soldier says it's spoiler free. (i dodged those paragraphs)

Anthony has posted his spoiler free review over at Trekmovie...

Star Trek is amazing.

Interspersed with the cool space battles, corvette driving and sword fights, are a series of impactful character moments that prove that Orci and Kurtzman understand love this crew as much as we all do.

What is perhaps lacking in this film is a full understanding of Nero and his motivation beyond revenge. There are a couple of exposition moments, but definitely not long enough for Trek fans who want to be ‘fully briefed.’

In the end I believe that JJ Abrams and his team have done what they set out to do, which is to create a ‘realer’, more accessible and more action-oriented Star Trek for a new generation — while at the same time honoring the Star Trek that has come before it.

Is it the best Star Trek film ever? Possibly. In some aspects, there can be no doubt. The scale, the effects, the sound, and much more are at a level never before seen in Star Trek and on par with the best films of the day. Every Star Trek film gets compared to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which is my favorite as it is with many other fans. It will take a few more viewings to make the final call, but for me, it is certainly in that top tier of great Star Trek films.

Promising review. But until reading this, I was convinced that the setting with the industrial pipes and tanks was Delta Vega or somewhere and NOT engineering. I know it's too trivial to make or break the movie, but that description of engineering sounds very hard to accept. Everything else production design-wise sounds/looks fine but it almost seems like a "stunt" to do something like that to engineering; it sounds so utterly inconsistent with accepted conventions. If engineering looked more like ENT or even the FTL drive room in BSG that would be cool, but this description sounds very inappropriate. I'm upset :scream: Someone talk me down, please.

It's probably the most ill-advised choice they made with the visual style of the movie.

Re: Advance screening/World Premiere discussions [the NO-SPOILERS vers

Yes, it's true.
That little glimpse we got from the piped engineering is a wtf moment.
If anything looks bad about this movie so far, this is it.

But, we'll live. And maybe in the sequel they can correct it.;)

Re: Advance screening/World Premiere discussions [the NO-SPOILERS vers

Don't compare how you think Eng should look with the new one. Consider the old version was lax in it's representations of that area. You've never seen or heard of how the ship stores/recycles it's water supplies and now you get that honor. That help?

Not in this case, no. And I'm among the first to support most of the visual artistic choices that these folks have made.
