Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect food

Admiral
I knew it would come to this! You walk into a popular restaurant, order your favorite dish, and the feds haul the chef out in handcuffs! :scream:

A California sushi chef and the restaurant in which he worked have been charged with illegally serving meat from an endangered Sei whale, the Justice Department said on Thursday.

Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, 45, and the parent company of the popular restaurant The Hump in Santa Monica were charged late on Wednesday with violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act which makes it illegal to sell any kind of whale meat.

The case stemmed from informants who ordered whale meat at the restaurant in October 2009 and evolved into a sting operation by U.S. wildlife and customs officials who observed whale meat being served at the restaurant last week.

"Someone should not be able to walk into a restaurant and order a plate of an endangered species," U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement.

Well why not?! :klingon:

Do these powermad freaks think we can live off bald-eagle burgers forever? Sometimes we want fish, dangit!

Damn right. If you can't eat an endangered species, well, what the hell else is it good for?

And whales are freaking MAMMALS! Not fish, MAMMALS!

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

If it weren't for people like you two, we'd still have unicorns. :(

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

No, whales are fish. If they were mammals they'd be served in a Japanese steak house instead of a sushi restaurant. :shifty:

Is this thread for real?

yes a chef was arrested for serving whale meat from an endangered species of whale under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.

Plus you have to wander when the chef goes out to the car to get the meat.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

But the whale wasn't illegally killed. It was killed for scientific study, part of which certainly includes culinary research!

Does whale taste good with wasabi? Food scientists need to find out.
Does whale meat contribute to heart disease in the US? Medical scientists need to find out.
Are people who eat whale meat ostracized? Social scientists need to find out.
Are sushi chefs able to beat a $100,000 fine? Legal scholars need to find out.

Besides, a baleen whale shows no respect for the endangered species act when it gulps down hundreds and thousands of pounds of almost microscopic species, many probably not only endangered, but virtually unknown to science.

Oooo.... Eating an endangered animal that feeds on smaller endangered animals puts the restaurant's patrons AT THE TOP OF THE ENDANGERED ANIMAL FOOD CHAIN!!!!

WIN!!!

Plus you have to wonder when the chef goes out to the car to get the meat.

And right there is the chef's legal defense. Did he know the whale was in his car? Perhaps he'd been noticing that his gas mileage was suffering, causing him untold tune-up costs and gas costs, when lo and behold, there was a frakking whale in his trunk! No wonder his mileage was bad.

Now however that whale managed to get into his trunk, it's obviously not going to come out without a fight, lots of pushing and prying, and probably a block and tackle. So the sushi chef does what any bewildered cook would do: He cuts it into conveniently sized slabs and tries to dispose of it at work.

This probably happens more frequently than people realize, and I'm sure no L.A. jury is going to overlook such a plausible defense.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Eating endangered species may be the best thing you can do to save it. Create demand. Someone will make it their business to ensure steady supply.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Salt might become endangered in New York...

If it wasn't for all the needless hunting, just think -- we could have had a chain of KFD's (Kentucky Fried Dodo's).

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Every good chef should know how to serve whale.

Sashimi of Abura-sunoko (flipper meat)

Now that's some good eatin' right thar!

If only Scotty had known that Gracie was tasty!

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Kirk: "Four-hundred tons?"

Scotty: "Aye, sir. It's not just the whales, it's also the tartar sauce!"

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

Would you use tartar sauce or A-1? This gets back to whether a whale is a mammal (served in a steak house) or a fish (served at a sushi bar).

Are we being visited by cloaked Klingon birds of prey that come to hunt tasty whales?

I want answers.

Re: Administration arresting chefs for serving politically incorrect f

He'll probably tell the Judge it was just a fluke.

Joking aside, I hope they throw the book at him and the company.

Naaah, it would never sell. Dutch sailors tried cooking and eating dodo meat in the 17th century and it tasted like shit.

And what kind of wine goes with whale, white or red? Or maybe a little Blue Nun?
He'll probably tell the Judge it was just a fluke.
Or he'll say he didn't do it on porpoise.
