News Adam Driver tried to bring back Kylo Ren with the help of Steven Soderbergh

Given this, the idea of Ben Solo not really being dead is something that we can't dismiss out of hand

I can, and I did.

Even if they didn't understand it I think it's weird how they couldn't have worked something out. Everyone else was behind it, it seems like smart money. I'm not wrong in saying that Ren is more popular than Rey am I? Great actor wants to return as Darth Vader's grandson, why not jump on that?

TFA: basically undoes all of the OT. People are mostly okay with it.
TLJ: undoes much of TFA. A lot of people grumble.
TRoS: undoes much of TRoS. Nearly everybody complains.

So, when Driver went to Iger and said, "Hey, I have an idea! Why not undo the ending of TRoS/the whole Sequel Trilogy we just finished?" ... Yeah, that doesn't sound like a great move to me.

We're talking about a mass murderer of a character here, who already got his redemption in sacrificing his life force for Rey. What the hell more is there to tell?!

If this was the kind of thing they had in mind for Ben, fair enough... but I suspect it wasn't.

And of course they already had the opportunity to show us Ben's ghost standing next to Luke & Leia at the end of IX, but they declined... for whatever reason.

Vader was around for a bit longer. Ben Solo might be able to have adventures, but post-Saga, Force Ghost only route knowns to be possible.

You could say the same about Vader. But look how they milked that.

If resurrecting Ben Solo would have resulted in garbage storytelling like Vader's role in Obi-Wan Kenobi and/or Ghost Anakin's role in Ahsoka, I'd say Iger spared us fans a bullet. :p

Look at how he was handled in the old EU. He appeared to Leia in a dream once, his voice spoke to someone else another time, and that was about it, wasn't it?
EU is not my strong point and I meant more what we have now, the prequels included. But I'm pretty sure we got a bit more Vader than that.

Vader definitely overstayed his welcome.

I don't disagree with either of you. But it does seem to me like something they would have said yes to. Whether good quality or not. I don't think Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh would have pushed for garbage storytelling.

I would expect something in traditional film vernacular from Soderbergh, but the language of Star Wars comes from illustration. This strikes me as having been a terrible idea (to say nothing of it being yet another unnecessary spinoff movie).

Whatever they intended should probably have just been a novel or comic.

Neither do I; I respect both of them. But I still think that, in terms of the franchise at large, bringing Ben Solo back from the dead anytime would be a mistake, and to do so immediately after TRoS would be disastrous.

True. But the transference of life energy between Rey and Ben brings in a new variable. They'd each brought the other back. We'd never seen that exact ability before. Perhaps that was a factor.

AK-shully… While I’d be against bringing Ben Solo back because he needs to be dead to pay for having killed literally billions of people, there is an apparently canonical (for now) way they could do it. One of the stories in I forget which tribute anthology had Qui-Gon’s Force Ghost not only manifesting to visit Obi-Wan, but almost being able to manifest corporeally, with the narrative comment made that eventually, he’d probably be able to do it if he wanted to (though he probably wouldn’t) — i.e. return as actual flesh and blood. And since Kylo is later one of the most powerful Force-users ever, being able to freeze a blaster bolt midair and such, it stands to reason that Ben Solo’s Force Ghost could probably manage to do it, at least eventually.

I wouldn’t want them to, but the option is there.
