I thought the set decoration for Changeling was great, too.

J.

As did I.

Benjamin Button wins for makeup! Also deserved, IMO. I usually find old-age makeup unconvincing, but in this film it wasn't too bad. And the de-aging effects were great too, even though some of it was surely digitally enhanced.

In any case, Cate Blanchett looked stunning!

Plastering someone's face with white-make up and then using a broad lipstick on him is hardly fantastic makeup.

Doing great old-age make-up takes a lot of talent.

More talent than "white face and lip stck."

QFT. When old make-up is done poorly, it's obvious. When it's good, you barely notice. Pitt's reverse aging looked pretty natural.

I'm actually sick of the Joaquin Phoenix jokes. They're getting to be painful, and Stiller is really distracting from the award.

And Slumdog wins another! :techman:That was one movie with great camera work.

Look at Hellboy. So many intracit make-up effects, and an aging effect wins? Hellboy should've taken that category.

The makeup in hellboy was "good" but hardly fantastic. Because it, well, looks like make-up effects. It looks like the latex and spirit gum that it is.

Making and actor look twice his age takes far, far more talent than it does to make someone look like a demon out of a comic book with a few runes on his chest.
You guys realize that alot of that makeup was also VFX.

Brad Pitt didn't appear in the movie until Button was on the boat.

Completely agree. The Joker's make-up was effective for the character, but there was nothing outstanding or noteworthy in the application of it. The make-up in Benjamin Button was effective and skillfully applied, IMO, even if it was done in combination with visual effects.

Oh, and riffing on Joaquin Phoenix:

I must be the only person who didn't think Stiller was that funny. I think the joke has run its course.

Maybe I just haven't seen as many jokes about it as you have. >shrugs< I guess it's just a case of different strokes for different folks, and all that.

That's the first time I saw it. It really is only good for a one shot, though. ;)

Edit:
I was just thinking about it, but the Oscars look spectacular in HD!

J.

Ah, the awards for short films that nobody saw! :p

I had a phone call, so I missed the 2008 comedy film segment. Nobody should ever call a film buff during the Oscars!!!! :p
