Academy Awards discussion thread

i really think alot of these technical awards they could phase out, or announce offscreen. then they'd have plenty of time for all these retrospective and musical bits

This will be the first time in about twelve years I won't be watching. After I heard Ricky Gervais was not hosting, that was me done.

Also, Ch 9 here is not putting it on until 9:30pm, since the mega-hit, ALL AUSTRALIANS MUST BE WATCHING "Underbelly" is taking the traditional Oscar timeslot of 8:30pm. I guess 9 finally realized not a lot of Aussies actually care about the Oscars and have given it the later slot(and, from the posted ending time of 12:30am, I guess are going to cut it down too!).

Are Oscar voters afraid to vote for anything fantastical like The Joker, or Hellboy? The Curious Case of Benjemin Button has make-up effects that have been being used for years. Nothing new, just safe to give the award to.

Benjamin Button for Art Direction! Well-deserved, although all the nominees were pretty good in that category.

I thought the set decoration for Changeling was great, too.

J.

As did I.

Benjamin Button wins for makeup! Also deserved, IMO. I usually find old-age makeup unconvincing, but in this film it wasn't too bad. And the de-aging effects were great too, even though some of it was surely digitally enhanced.

In any case, Cate Blanchett looked stunning!

Please, the Batman Begins makeup guy couldn't even apply the Joker's makeup evenly, why should he get an award?

Oh, God. That annoying twit fromn Twilight, Robert Pattinson. HE CAN'T ACT! I hated him in Goblet of Fire. I actually cheered when Cedric was killed. :p

Plastering someone's face with white-make up and then using a broad lipstick on him is hardly fantastic makeup.

Doing great old-age make-up takes a lot of talent.

More talent than "white face and lip stck."

Agreed

Look at Hellboy. So many intracit make-up effects, and an aging effect wins? Hellboy should've taken that category.

The makeup in hellboy was "good" but hardly fantastic. Because it, well, looks like make-up effects. It looks like the latex and spirit gum that it is.

Making and actor look twice his age takes far, far more talent than it does to make someone look like a demon out of a comic book with a few runes on his chest.
