Absolute worst character in DS9 History: Ezri Dax

I liked Ezri. At the time close age range so hormones were a probability.
She got a decent character arc given only 1 season. And love her in the book series. Hope lower decks makes her captain of aventine cannon.

Just gonna say it; I suspect quite a few people just hate Ezri because she wasn't as conventionally attractive as Jadzia.

Are you kidding? I see way more people crushing on Ezri than Jadzia. She's not the model type, but she's still the beautiful, quirky pixie girl that many Trek fans probably want as their girlfriends. That seems to be the difference when people discuss them that way. People think Jadzia is attractive, but Ezri seems to crop up more as the one they want to be with, and a lot of that is down to looks. I've always felt it's a big part of her appeal for many fans.

I'm not into women, but I also find Ezri cuter than Jadzia. I just suspect that a lot of people back in the 90s were mad that the former fashion model was replaced by a more "quirky" looking actress and that's where at least some people's dislike of Ezri started.

Ezri got the anger for killing Dax and the fact that instead of being a hypercompetant badass, they went with a clumsy newbie.

I actually feel it was a mistake to make her a captain. I wish they'd kept her on her counselor path.

Only anger I give regarding Dax is the Superman effect: kill a character off in a particular emotional and heart-wrenching way... then bring them back like it was "just kidding".

Again though, plenty of people seemed to like the whole clumsy newbie thing. I don't see anyone getting annoyed at Ezri because of Dax's death. And it's not like Dax was too many people's favourite character.

Agree about making her a captain though. Not everyone needs to be a captain.

This surprises me. I've seen more about Jadzia's attractiveness than Ezri. Which is an odd benchmark but that's what we humans do for sure.

It's more the way I see people talk about each character. I'm sure people would agree that Jadzia is more conventionally attractive, but Ezri is somehow more the fantasy girlfriend figure. In any case, I really doubt Ezri's looks were a problem for the show. I'm just disagreeing with the idea that people didnt like her because she somehow fell short in that department.

While not quite related, I liked what they did in the DS9 Relaunch novels with her character - changing her from counselor to command track after Ezri realized she could be so much more. I really need to finish those Mission Gamma novels, seriously. I'm on the second one.

I have to admit Worlds of Star Trek: Trill was quite a good read too, a great dive into Ezri as a character.

Ezri definitely looked younger than Jadzia and that was by design but both characters looked better than Rom.

so naturally they hired Nicole de Boer to play her successor character? Something doesn't add up here.

I wouldn't have minded a scene where Jadzia had a death which was meaningful than her not involved in the action but walks into a temple and the evil guy randomly killed her off. Did you see the writing credits had Rick Berman on there? Could the person who wrote the episode make a better way for the actress to be send off? Was there more going on between Farrell and Rick Berman productions in general, if his personal assistants had issues with her I wouldn't doubt that trickle down to the showrunners and the writers room. Was there issues with her and the production because Farrell struggled with her science/treknobabble lines and they later made her a full time helm where she made lame lines during the war seasons? Jadzia's final scene was appalling.

While I don't think it's particularly fruitful to debate who was more attractive or more desired, it seems to me that Farrell has a much more solid fan base. The gay and trans communities idolize her as playing a pioneering character. It seems that she has been able to pack convention halls in a way that De Boers hasn't. Obviously, there are people who appreciate De Boers for her acting and for playing a trans character, but I don't see her overcoming Farrell's popularity.

Neither do I. And even taking popularity aside, six seasons is a lot more impressive than one. I'm just saying I doubt any significant number of fans were put off by De Boers lack of 'conventional beauty', and I'm sure that any who were were more than off-set by the number of fans who took to Ezri in part because of how she looked.

As someone who likes Jadzia it wasn't because she was played by a model looking actress. I actually liked the character. While I did not hate Ezri I just don't think she was as interesting. I also think all the goofiness was over done. So she was cute. That's still not something that makes her more sympathetic. Tons of women would probably love to be cute. And tons of men too. Though, tell Bashir that when he woke up... that was the first thing he said to Ezri, after he found Sloan, was that she was beautiful.

I really appreciate the work Nicole de Boer did as Ezri. She was not set an easy task -- especially given how pissed a lot of fans probably were by the apparent fridging of Farrell's Jadzia -- but she delivered a genuinely distinct and interesting take with her own personality and foibles, and one that really built a sense of how successive Trill hosts could be very different from each other while still having a certain continuity through the memory and personality of the symbiont at their core. Not an easy line to walk at all. De Boer did it amazingly well, I think Ezri is a very cool character. I've learned to respect her as I've also learned to more fully enjoy the later seasons of DS9.
