Abrams' "Revisions" - Things I'm okay with and things I'm not

EJA

Fleet Captain
Okay dokey, I thought I'd just put together a little list of some of J.J. Abrams' tweaks to the Trek mythos and say which ones I can handle and which ones I think are just plain stupid. Here goes:

THINGS I'M COOL WITH -
) The USS Enterprise being built on Earth's surface. Doesn't really disrupt anything too much.

) The redesigned exterior of the Enterprise. What with TOS-Remastered, it doesn't seem such a stretch to me.

)Montgomery Scott's new backstory. Well, after all, we never did know exactly how he came to be aboard the Enterprise.

)The uniforms. Again, no real biggie, they still look similar enough.

THINGS I'M NOT SO COOL WITH -
) The redesigned interior of the Enterprise, in particular the bridge. Too much of a radical departure, and too much like that of the NX-01.

)Kirk's new backstory. Suddenly he's Dennis the Menace, and enlists in Starfleet AFTER Uhura, Sulu and etc have already been there. No services aboard the USS Republic and USS Farragut prior to Enterprise. No mention of friendship with Gary Mitchell. Oh yeah, and groping Uhura. Ugh.

)Kirk's first trip on the Enterprise being the ship's maiden voyage. WHAT THE HELL?!!! Even if you ignore the semi-canon Robert April, there's still Chris Pike's several years in command before Kirk ever stepped aboard.

You know all of this how?

Oh yeah, and groping Uhura. Ugh.

He does? sounds unlikely - how do you know this?

being the ship's maiden voyage.

Guesswork on your part - I don't there is any confirmation this is the maiden voyage.

Have you not watched the Trailer? :wtf: He has full blown sex with her.

WHAT THE HELL! I didn't know this, that is flaming ridiculous.

Don't get too hot...

Nothing I've seen or heard so far indicates that Kirk's first trip is also the E's maiden voyage in this movie.
I don't know where EJA gets this idea from

And April is non-canon, not semi-canon

Oh yeah, and groping Uhura. Ugh.

Watch the trailer again.
It's not Uhura he has sex with, but a green Orion girl
This was settled for good once the HD trailer became available online

One of the spoilers I've read on this board
... is that Kirk picks up Uhura in a bar frequented by Starfleet personnel, and that he does, indeed, 'grope' her and more.

Uh yes... forgot about that. I don't know about the more part.He gets his ass kicked I believe.

Even so, they are not aboard the same ship at the time and they are not part of the same crew yet...Kirk is not even a cadet yet at that time probably
So, I still see no problem

Not entirely so.

From the descriptions of the scene, he did hit on her at the bar, which precipitated the fight with Sulu and others. In the fight, he accidentally ends up getting "a good feel" of Uhura. It's apparently played for laughs. But it was not sexual or a deliberate grope. And I've heard nothing of "more" between Kirk and Uhura.

Yeah - they are going to relaunch Star Trek with Captain Kirk groping random women

He chats her up in a bar and gets knocked into her, he doesn't wander up behind her and grab hold of her breasts.

The premise is that Nero visits certain points in time to try and do away with Kirk.
My theory is that we will see young Kirk lose his father and will be a mess.
He is sent off to live with his uncle on the farm that we saw in Generations. The uncle will be played by Shatner.
The uncle is abusive. Young Jim runs off and ends up at the San Francisco shipyards where he sees the Enterprise. He rides up and is met by her new Captain Robert April played by Tom Cruise.
He is encouraged to go to Starfleet Academy where he is a screw-up.
He wants the Enterprise but is passed up by Christopher Pike for the command.
I think that Spock will have the same rocky start and this is what will bring them together as friends.
I predict Nimoy will visit Spock again and reference will be given to the animated series that he is a cousin that visited once before when he was a child. This would be really cool.
Also from the animated series we will see Arex.
What we have seen of the Enterprise I think is an early version and we will see refits along the way so I'm not too wacked about the design. Remember we are traveling through time.
I think we will see Mitchell, Riley, Rand, Finnigan, Janice Lester

The things you've listed are the result of Nero creating an alternate timeline by blowing up the Kelvin and killing George Kirk 17 - 20 years early. Do you have a problem with the the results because you feel they violate "canon"? Or because you find the story points lame?

That would be #2 - TPTB/TIIC seem to have all fallen into the "let's do time travel 'cos that's kewl and you can get away with anything" trap. And yet, none of them have done a particularly good job of it; even First Contact, while an okay movie, wasn't an especially smart one - it was just a collection of 'bits.' It would be nice for someone to rule out time travel as a basic premise of Star Trek and get back to crafting coherent stories. They seem to forget that, while some of Trek's most memorable stories involved time travel, so too did some of its worst.

For me the point is more that this is a cheap adolescent attempt at humor. And honestly, if you were knocked into a woman, wouldn't you grab her arms or her shoulders to try to steady yourself? Which kicks the whole thing up another level of dumb.

From what I've read:
Kirk tries to make a move on her in a bar, and gets into a fight as she blows him off. During the fight, he accidently grabs her forward appendages.

Since he's not in Starfleet at this point, and considering his habits in TOS, this would not be out of character for James Kirk.

Starfleet gives him a sense of discipline, and he grows out of this.

Personally, I find no issues with this.

Uhura's already in Starfleet before Kirk has even entered the academy, and you see nothing wrong with this?! :wtf:

It does (a little bit) when taken out of the context of the film. However, when I watch the film, I will then see then if this works for me or not.

The actual "Uhura in the Academy before Kirk" won't bother me at all if the film makes it seem plausible.

The USS Enterprise being built on Earth's surface.
You know, I have to say that really bothered me, but only because I couldn't figure out how a starship would get off the ground and into space. But then I read A Flag Full of Stars, where it's written about how the Enterprise's new saucer section flies off into space to join with the warp engines. It's actually a relatively lengthy write-up, toward the end of the book, I believe.

The novel explains some of the refit procedures that turned the Original Series Enterprise into the one seen in the feature films. One of the major overhauls was that the saucer section was removed and landed on Earth where it was rebuilt and then launched back into space.

So I guess I can accept the warp engines being on Earth, too. :)

<snip>
No.
Another actor was cast in that part. There will be no Uncle Shat.

I don't have any problem with the 1701 launching a decade or more later than it "should" or Kirk entering Starfleet in his mid-late twenties.

I just want this movie to be entertaining.

Wow, reading those I thought I my opinion would differ slightly for me, but I agree with all of those. :bolian:

The Dennis the Menace thing is irritating to(that they did that). That part in the trailer where the car goes over the cliff and the officer asks his name and he says his full name. It just seemed so tacky to me. I hope I am not alone in that.
