About Mama Kirk (SPOILERS!!)

Jiraiya

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
What exactly was she doing on the Kelvin?

I thought the whole crew members and their families was a 24th Century thing?

J

Perhaps they were crew mates who got together? In this timeline, who knows?

I was getting the vibe that the Kelvin was supposed to be a research ship, so I figured she was a civilian researcher on board or something

Maybe the ship's occupants was similar to the Ent-D... If you remember, that ship had family members of some of the crew on board...

Same, I was getting the clear indication she was Starfleet as well, as she was "off world" according to his uncle when Kirk stole the corvette and drove by his brother.

Plus while familes where never really shown in TOS, married enlisted and officers where, with the C story of Balance of Terror being about a marriage.

House sent her there to research some alien crud a patient contracted.

I got the vibe that she was a Starfleet Officer and not a civilian along for the ride, the conversation young Kirk has where his stepfather (und credits call him the Stepdad, not the Uncle) says his mother is offworld.

^^ I actually didn't recognize his voice either, but I'd read somewhere that he was in it. I'll listen more closely on my next viewing.

So that was Kirk's brother that he sped past? I thought it was just a friend from school or something?

Close, Memory Alpha says it was a survey ship. It doesn't specify what Winona Kirk's job was but your guess makes sense to me.
