A wonderful expreience!

There are lots of people with extreme social anxiety who can make it through because they're smart enough to pass all the tests and finish their assignments. He probably didn't become as detached as he was and addicted to the holodeck until he got to the Enterprise.

Psychological health and screening is supposed to have progressed beyond what we have in 2018! And the Enterprise is a small group, only 1000 people. It's usually harder for someone to fade into isolation in such a small living group.

Even in the 24th century, there must be privacy rules. People wouldn't get into his private business until it affected his work or until he asked for help. Or jump to the conclusion that because somebody is private they have a disorder. Or automatically assume that a choice not to engage in the same way as everyone else is a psychological health issue. Being shy and private are not disorders until they make you start skipping work and such.

People fade into isolation in much smaller living groups than 1000. Ever been to a school with 1000 people?
