A way the new bridge look could fit into existing Trek canon....

^Yeah, TMP was every bit a reboot as Trek XI is, and somehow fans found a way to stick TMP into the existing canon. If we can do that with TMP, I'm sure XI is able to be shoehorned into canon.

I have an idea. Tell me what you think.

What if at the end of the movie, after some huge battle with the Enterprise being heavily damaged, they show her being repaired at space dock, and they show quick glimpses of the bridge being repaired. And in these glimpses, you can clearly see the bridge being redesigned into something looking a bit closer to the bridge we all know from the original show.

Now, assuming this movie is just the first in a series starring this cast and crew, maybe for each consecutive movie we see the bridge and other parts of the Enterprise being redesigned more and more to something resembling the TOS look.

Then in the last movie starring this cast, in the very last shot in that movie, we see the bridge and every other part of the Enterprise looking pretty damn close to how it looked in TOS.

What would you think if they did it like this?

The problem is that we've already seen how the bridge looks in WNMHGB and in the series, and it's mostly the same.

In WNMHGB, they've yet to go to the blue, gold, and red uniforms.

In this new film, they're already wearing them on the iMac bridge.

Nothing quite fits, so I'm leaning more and more towards "This is a parallel universe, and not the same one we've known."

If it turns out the Lite-Brite bridge is part of an altered timeline that Spock somehow fixes, okay. But if not, there's likely not to be any "gradual change to what we know" because the whole thing is already impossibly out of sequence.

unless they were in phase of change in that time period and were trying out different uniforms .

;)

...and then temporarily stopped this experimenting and went back to the old uniforms exclusively for WNMHGB, but then suddenly decided the old uniforms are crap after all and switched to TOS color scheme exclusively.
No wonder all those Starfleet captains go insane.

For the next 20-30 years we'll treat it like "That's what the bridge always looked like, they just couldn't do it that way in the 60's because of budget reasons." Then a spin-off series will do a time-travel episode and make a joke "It is the Enterprise bridge. We do not discuss it with outsiders." Several years after that another spin-off series will do a two-parter that explains the drastic bridge change in much the same way you did in the original post.

I wonder where they've done that before...it rings a bell but I can't quite place it...:D

It's like Hamlet. Shakespeare staged it a certain way at the dawn of the seventeenth century. In the Restoration Era, it was staged differently. Olivier did it his way, Branagh did it his way, Kevin Kline had his own way of doing Hamlet. The play is staged for the times. The text evokes the past and the intentions, but it's presented in a way that the audience can accept.

I don't need rigid adherence to the past. I need something that makes me feel like I'm watching Star Trek. :)[/quote]

I completely agree.

Abrams and crew, if they have an reservations, should take a look at this thread. It seems like, for the most part, us Star Trek fans are completely on board for this movie. I mean the writers are huge Trek fans so I am not worried at all about the movie fitting into the continuity of Star Trek universe.

Ok, now that I've read the entire thread...

I have to say that I don't mind the new bridge at all (besides that damn hostess station; what the hell is that for?). I'm a relative new member to Star Trek having watched TNG when I was a kid. A lot of people hated ENT but to me it seemed to most Trek. Especially the first two seasons. It was the crew of the Enterprise seeking out new life and new civilizations. It didn't matter to me that the crew wasn't all that great.

I agree with those that say this is a reimagining prequel. As I mentioned before the writers are huge Trek fans and from what I've gathered from the articles they've published about the movie, they worked with Abrams to keep the look of Star Trek as nostalgic as possible. I imagine that the new Enterprise will look similar to the original and I'm happy with the Kelvin (btw have you noticed that you don't get a very good shot of the deflector dish? can't really tell if its TOS or the refit). Its reminiscient of what the other ships in the fleet looked like at the time. The bridge needs to be updated for this generation. I mean, the bridge in the TOS movies changed for ever single movie. TFF and TUC corridors were the TNG corridors for crying out loud.,

Reservations about what? Dumping all footage shot so far and starting again?

Internet banter by a small group of avid fans on a ST bbs represents a very skewed, tiny percentage of the intended audience, and is not statistically significant about anything.

As an avid TMP fan - it was what made me a ST fan - I know that TMP got a lot of hatred aimed its way for about 15 years or so, and then it seemed like it was finally raising nostalgic respect. Then along came the DVD DE and divided loyalties even more. ;)

Reservations about how the fans will react to Star Trek XI. I know this is a small percentage, but by the nature of most Star Trek fans, I would assume that they would end up on forum such as this.

Course you know what happens when someone assumes something...
