A.V. Club Reviews

I would imagine there has to be some spillover between here and the Onion AV Club commentary pages. Anyone here read Zack Handlen's TNG reviews? Interesting stuff.

I love his analyses of episodes. They're quite insightful, and entertaining to boot. I don't, however, always agree with his final ratings (as opposed to someone like Jammer) but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the reviews.

Some of the comments on those reviews are interesting as well.

I'm particularly looking at the comments and reviews for 'Code of Honor' and 'Data's Day'...and maybe 'Rascals.'(One poster, named 'Alurin' made a very interesting observation under the 'Code of Honor' review. Bravo).

From the comments, I became aware of Wil Wheaton's publication, 'Memories of the Future,' which I've ordered through my school library.

I read them and occasionally post there. A.V. Club is a frustrating place. My two favourite shows of all-time ("Batman: The Animated Series" and "The Simpsons") are being reviewed by writers I don't much care for (can't stand the guy writing "The Simpsons" reviews...only he could write so poorly that I'd be inclined to skip in depth reviews of my second favourite show ever), so I'm glad they have a good writer doing Star Trek.

I generally agree with him, although he was too generous with some of his reviews of the original Star Trek (can't believe he spoke favorably about "Plato's Stepchildren") and too harsh with some of the TNG reviews. His aversion to "Qpid" is baffling and it was weird how he declared TNG "isn't quite a great show". Hopefully he'll come to his senses and change his mind about that once he's done reviewing the series.

I don't feel that Season 7 will change his mind, unfortunately.

Plus, I think it's in their nature over there to be almost too critical of shows; I think the only show they feel is "great" would be The Wire.

^ It's true. The AV Club runs some great stuff, but they are, as a rule, really, really harsh. The commenters even more so than the reviewers, though you'll notice they have a real aversion to giving out A+ grades. Handlen hasn't given out one to TNG, not even for TBOBW.

I actually looked these up since you mentioned them and I find them kind of funny. A lot of great discussion to go along with it.

If I don't agree with what the reviewer says, I just take it with a grain of salt. They can be super critical at times, but they can produce some well thought-out reviews.

I've been reading their reviews off and on for the past couple of years. I read a lot of their reviews of current shows as well.

I don't know why people are waiting for season seven to change Zack's mind, though. I thought he was only up to season four? Seasons five and six are pretty solid years of the series, no?
