A TOS (only) fan's reaction

I happen to agree with a lot of what the OP pointed out in his review...BUT...I still enjoyed the film.

It was a fun movie...well executed...and I couldn't say that about any of the Next Gen movies (Except First Contact)...

JJ's Trek is far from perfect, but if you go into ANY movie and nitpick and over-analyze you are not going to have a good time.

And a good time is what I had.

Now, having said that -- I cut this film some slack because it was the "origin story" so to speak. I have much higher expectations of the next one. The next film should give us a closer representation of the characters we grew up with...in other words, more serious and more like TOS.

EXCELLENT point! I feel the same way! I will expect more in the way of plot and characters from the next film.

I loved TMP when it came out, it had better sets and visual effects than the series and it was great seeing the characters back together again. However the movie needed better editing and some tighter plotting. I didn't get the same feeling from the new movie in terms ofthe great feeling of seeing the characters again, but the movies are similar in the respect that JJ Abrams like Robert Wise made Star Trek respectable again and up to date production wise.

Personally I'm looking forward to where they're going next and I really didn't have that feeling since the first movie.

Actually, I see it as being the other way around: TMP was simply too good for the average ST fan, never mind the non-fan
That statement is opinion with NO supporting evidence, I am old enough to have seen it in the theater in late 1979, NEVER in my entire life was I more disappointed with any movie, and that's a lot of movies, some really crappy ones too. But the level of expectations verses the quality and story was never wider, which contributes to my current perspective.

You offer no proof, I on the other hand will.

So I guess you might be part of the 2.5% then? :p

I wouldn't put too much stock in that pole since the latest movie is so much fresher in people's minds. Take that pole again in ten years when everyone has seen them all a dozen times on DVD (or whatever) and you'll see big differences.
