I have a theory about this show. It's far fetched, but could explain some things. If right, it involves a huge twist so you may not want to read this:

Is it possible everything we've seen thus far is an "evil" mirror universe?

Jonathan Frakes said himself there was going to be mirror verse episodes, but he didn't specify how they would be implemented.

There's been INTENTIONAL violations of canon so far. For example, in the last episode there was a Gorn skeleton in Lorca's room. We know the Gorn was unknown to the Federation at this time. The writers know this. So why would they violate canon like that? (Unless it's a S31 secret?)

The people working on the show have said the apparent discrepancies this show has with canon would be explained. What's the only thing that could explain the differences within the framework of known Trek? An alternate timeline or mirror universe IMO.

Maybe that's why we've never heard of Spock's half sister? Because he doesn't have one?

Michelle Yeoh is apparently still filming episodes. Why?

Notice how the show is intentionally making characters a-holes and it has a darker feel / look. These are trademarks of the mirror universe.

It's been said that as the show goes on the uniforms and everything will start to look like what we saw in "The Cage."

Is it possible that at some point down the line there's going to be a twist in which we find out everything we've been watching is from the mirror verse and it will switch back to the regular verse?

What do you guys think? Is it possible? Has someone posted this theory already?

This was explained in After Trek, Lorca got the skeleton somewhere else. They also put it in there for the audience to question.

He probably doesn't know exactly what it is.

    Probably more flashbacks.

Does every response to this thread require spoiler tags or will the big red Spoiler text in the title cover it?

Either way, not seeing it, so no. I don't think there is any mileage in the theory.

Gorn's arent entirely unknown, but maybe not contacted.

An Orion trader in Enterprise offered some kind of drink to Archer and said it was "From the Gorn Hedgemony, but the less said about them the better." Archer did not ask further.

Personally, I think it would be interesting as hell, and a good reason to have several mirror universe shows. I just don't think this is what it is.

If its mirror universe, then why is it called the Federation and not the Terran Empire?

Because it isn't called that yet. We need to subjugate the Klingon empire first!

The Enterprise episodes 'In a Mirror Darkly' parts 1 and 2 would disagree with you. ;)

This is a mirror of the mirror universe, while looking into another mirror.

I was going with a Time Ship, vs Mirror Universe theory... but definitely something up in this 'universe' for sure....

    No Terran Empire.
    No split blade knives.
    No Imperial Symbol.
    No "ISS" used fully yet.
    Aliens aren't slaves.
    No skimpy outfits.
The Klingons weren't just piledrived by a Terran fleet.
    They say nice, peaceful things...occasionally.
No rampant BDSM leather clad bisexual shennanigans.

    Yeeeeah no.

On another forum, someone had the hypothesis that Discovery's magic mushroom pixie dust drive will cause it to begin shifting through timelines. The climax of the story will involve Burnham causing herself to essentially cease to exist (die in the attack her parents were killed in, or not be adopted by Sarek and be someone else entirely) resulting in the war ceasing to exist. As a plus, other changes to the timeline could explain all of the other continuity errors (e.g., the series could end with Klingons with hair).
