A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Spoiler-Filled Discussion

I have really enjoyed the world book thus far.

Correct me if I am wrong but we had no idea who Aegon V married before the world book did we?

That's correct. The Worldbook is the first indicator of the existence of Betha, as well as several other Targaryen queens (Alyssa Velaryon, Daenaera Velaryon, Larra Rogare, Dyanna Dayne, Shaera Targaryen).

So, I'm in a bar in Castle Street Belfast with some friends last night, when someone comes in and says 'Them two boys from Game of Thrones are out there.'

'Who?' I ask.

'Jon Snow and some other one.'

So out I run and sure enough Kit Harrington and Alfie Allen are there, waiting for a taxi. Both were very friendly but Alfie refused to have his photo taken, as apparently he just doesn't do it. Which I think is a bit dick-ish but there you go. Maybe he's keeping in character. I still told him his performance was great at the minute cos that's the kinda guy I am. Kit did pose for a couple of pics though. though. My female friends on Facebook are massively jealous.

If a few dozen people asked me for a photo every day I'd probably start telling them no too, especially when most of them are just facebook bragging photos and not something the person will actually appreciate next week once the likes and comments stop.

Maybe so, I suppose you never know till you've been in that situation, though a friend of mine met Conleth Hill at Belfast airport a few months ago and he had no difficulty with having his pic taken. He was perfectly civil and polite but it left me with a more favourable impression of Harrington than him.

Ah, I've been waiting for the for the official release (as oppose to the fan recording that leaked earlier). I love the use of David Bowie's "Heroes."

Lots of great snippets of everything and almost everyone. We hear (but don't see) Jonathan Pryce and that was worth the price of admission right there, although I do wish we had a glimpse of Alexander Siddig (the recent photos included him and Pryce, but I want footage!). It's especially cool to see the doors of The House of Black and White.

Interesting... It looks as if Varys might possibly be going with Tyrion all the way to where Danny is in Meereen. I suppose that could work, considering we don't see him hardly at all in the final two books after he helps Tyrion escape. And they appear to be completely removing the Young Griff/Aegon subplot from the show version. It's almost like they specifically brought attention to that point by mentioning "her, not him". I wonder if this means that the whole Griff subplot in the books has been a red herring/dead end all along, and Aegon's army will probably get smashed in the first pages of TWoW. I'm wondering if some, if not all, of Danny's potential suitors will likely be written out of this version too.

It also looks like we might be getting a glimpse of the "Brazen Beasts" here, with the brass masks, although they all look quite similar and decidedly human and not unique animal faces. Probably easier to mass-produce on a budget this way.

Nice to see Bronn is still being involved and didn't go off permanently with Lollies. Should be interesting to see how this plays out with him and Jaime down in Dorne.

REALLY looking forward to seeing Alexander Siddig, although I don't recall seeing him in this trailer.

So it looks like we may be getting 10 seasons now. Seven didn't seem like enough to me, so this is good news. Not to mention the bonus of giving Martin a second chance to finish the books first.

They don't need Martin to finish the books--they'll work out their own ending, based on the direction they want to go and informed by Martin's plans that he's shared with them.

It doesn't sound like they are going to be forced to make it 10. Naturally, the guy responsible for making HBO as profitable as possible doesn't want the money train to stop. Maybe we'll get 8 seasons instead, I just don't see 10 as realistic unless we get tons of worthless padding. There's also the matter of signing all the needed actors for another 3 years.

I never said that they needed Martin to finish the books. I'm talking about a bonus to myself. I want Martin to finish the books first.

No, not forced to, but Game of Thrones wouldn't be the first show to last 10 years or more. Maybe they'd love to work on it for three more years.

One suggestion I've seen is that they would do a split season, which would in essence be 2 seasons but they could call it 7A and 7B. The Sopranos did something similar with their 6th and final season and Mad Men is doing it with their 7th.

Of course, HBO have made it clear that it's down to the writers and what they feel is the best creative route to take.
