A Roseanne revival? Really??

Yeah, Trump's boasting and self-congratulating about the ratings was a large part of me wanting nothing to do with this show. Haven't found Rosanne Barr funny for years, her support of Trump -like with most people- makes it hard for me to take her any level of seriously. The show may be funny, fine. It should be possible to watch a show and dismiss the political views of those behind it and the show may have "positive" vibes and messages to it contrary to what Trump and the current crop of the GOP stands for (as I understand it, the show has a character in it who is not gender-conforming and the Rosanne character supports him. (Which contrasts with what Trump stands for, has stood for, and what the current crop of GOP politicians stand for, publicly, catering to the base of bases.)

The "political climate" for me right now is just too turbulent and rocky, it's hard for to set it aside too much, particularly when I know the politics of people involved, how they express them and the problems I have when even the "rational" of those people support Trump, despite the pure illogic of it given his behavior and actions/inactions over the last year and half.

To each their own. But I'm passing on this and, again, I liked the "original" show. But Rosanne's comedy was always sort of on a delicate balance for me and, really, I got more laughs from the other actors/characters in the show more than Rosanne.

Trump has already taken credit for the ratings success. "Over 18 million people. And it was about us." You know nothing moves Trump as much as ratings.

I admit I was a little disappointed to find out that Barr isn't just a Trump supporter but she's tweets about right-wing conspiracies like Pizzagate.

I was kind of surprised to hear "pussy hat" on network TV.

Well, when the President says it, that makes it okay. Ya know?

Hasn't the show always been a little political?. You had Roseanne kiss a woman and her mom came out of the closet and you had things like teenage pregancy and I recall them smoking Pot in one episode at time when that stuff was a big issue on network tv. They took on poor people issues and Roseanne herself was maybe the first strong working stiff, female character on tv. Well maybe not the first. I just recalled "Alice" but her character was kind of a poor person's role model and it wasn't until she married Tom Arnold and she started wearing more glamour clothes and getting plastic surgery and them going to Disneyland and of course the LOttery season when it became clear the starting premise of the show wasn't really that much of what the show had became.

I'm sick of people thinking politics aren't part of TV, they are and have been and will continue to be. It's like when people complained that WiIll and Grace became political last year... No it became politcal 20 years ago, and Roseanne was political 30 years ago. People are just fucking stupider and more annoying.

It's GOOD to show Roseanne playing devil's advocate because you can see views being raw and exposed and I think that is better than driving people off.

Anyway at its core Roseanne is about - family.

Shows that do politics isn't really a bad thing because you want shows to have strong points-of-views. The only problem really is when they are written badly. You need to explore what both sides think or how our social issues impact a character's persepctive. Usually it helps to be subtle but not always. You got a few who can do something that that is kind of preachy yet still have it work. Aaron Sorkin is a master at that. IIt also helps if the writers are kind of smart and don't go to deep on the cliches but I guess that circles around to a show being badly written.

Indeed. Look no further than Adam Baldwin, who's a great character actor (and not just Firefly), but his politics sucks.

That's funny because I find Susan Sarandon to be the only person in Hollywood who knows what the fuck is actually going on.

I can't stand Patricia Heaton views, but I love The Middle. It's called acting. As long as Roseanne doesn't come out and go 'Kill all the X and set X on fire!!!!' I really don't give a shit. People can have their viewpoints right until they get violent.

And it's not my fault that Trump is an idiot who thinks life is a TV show. Once again, ignore him as much as possible and move.

I can't wait until tomorrow so we can talk about the actual episode.

Completely agreed. While I do remember him primarily as Jayne Cobb, he's a solid actor across the board. I can ignore his political beliefs, because I enjoy his work, and as long as I can keep them separate, it doesn't affect anything I love, and that includes my hundreds upon hundreds of Firefly rewatches.

Saw the first two episodes and loved them. Those conversations are the exact conversations that families across America are having. That is what made the original show work. Far as critics such as this..

I find the
comments of "normalizing" Trump supporters to be incredibly mean spirited, insulting and hypocritical. I didn't vote for the guy, but some members of my family and friends did. The West Wing ran for seven seasons and was the most over the top and idealized representation of liberalism Ive seen on T.V. Were these critics of the new Roseanne critics of the West Wing or do they pick and choose when politics is tolerable in their programming?

Another enjoyable episode with the obvious highlights coming from literally everything John Goodman, as well as the continuous focus on Darlene and her family. This time the focus is on Harris and how she's coping poorly with the new home. It's interesting to watch Darlene navigate through motherhood while dealing with a difficult daughter with the obvious contrasts with how Roseanne and Dan had to deal with her (and Becky). No sign of Mark in the episode, which is a shame. I'm much more interested in him than Harris, but it's good to have solid development for both of Darlene's kids.

The one thing that felt tonally off was how Roseanne called Harris a bitch, but Harris never brought that up when Darlene forced her to apologize to her grandmother for calling her names that weren't nearly as bad. Obviously Harris needed to learn respect under someone else's household, but Roseanne needed to be called out, too. Darlene did so for the water spraying and we know she would've done the same if she had known her mom called her daughter a bitch.

Mark missing is very weird because he sleeps in the same room as Darlene. I enjoyed the episode. The Middle really needs a bonus 10th season or a spinoff because the Roseanne / The Middle combo was awesome.

Like really? They made a joke about black and Asian comedies because that's what follows Roseanne. It wasn't a swipe. If it was why would the characters be watching them? So stupid. This is why why can't have nice things.

There are stupid dumbass cult members on both sides, on both sides.

So glad we are getting many more episodes.

Ratings update...

ABC’s Roseanne revival with its third episode drew 15.2 million total viewers and a 3.9 demo rating on Tuesday night, down 17 and 25 percent from its boffo, double-episode premiere.

For comparison’s sake: Of this TV season’s other hit comedy launches, CBS’ Young Sheldon dropped 42 and 26 percent from premiere night to Week 2, while NBC’s Will & Grace revival slipped 30 and 33 percent.

I thought the third episode wasn't quite as good. Maybe it's because the little boy is a little more interesting than yet another bratty teenager. Still I like the idea of parents talking about the needs for structure and discipline. Have a hard time seeing how Darlenne though could become suh a pushover as a parent. I think she would have grown up to be alot like her mom even though they disagree on lots of things. They both had a tough feisty spirit from what I recall on the old show. Becky on the other hand I could see easily being more like Darlenne has become. PLus we could have used more Jackie in this episode. Dan was good but didn't have anything particularly interesting to do.
