A Roseanne revival? Really??

I must be missing the social commentary because it seemed like the joke, if it was even a joke because I am not even seeing the setup or punchline in what she said, is all about her looks. Even those jokes are usually about people who have a unique look to them and Valerie Jarrett looks like any typical human being. They are also usually among friends who like to Josh each other. What she said was just her wanting to say something mean about someone she doesn't like.

Jason
People who have relationships with the Muslim brotherhood aren't nice people. With that said, I don't blame Rosanne for saying what she said. As for Planet of the Apes, do you think it was depicted as a racist movie?

Planet of the Apes isn't racist but everyone knows the history of racist comparing black people to monkeys. That would be seen as offensive even if she tried to do that kind of joke in the 80's.

There's a long history of racists making comparisons of black people to apes and monkeys. That's what she was saying with the Planet of the Apes comment. It's not a joke; it's racism, pure and simple. And the Muslim Brotherhood shit is no better.

ETA: Never mind, I see you already knew that above.

The Captain Renaults among the cast, production, and executives at ABC who are somehow shocked to find racism going on here after Roseanne has been peddling bigotry for years are pretty disingenuous and hypocritical, though. They knew what she was before they hired her again and gave her a high profile show. She hasn't exactly been subtle about her bigotry.

Exactly how did she get a show again? As good as the old show was I don't recall any huge demand for a comeback.

Jason

lol...'huge demand for a comeback' is not even close to base criteria for a TV revival. She got a show because she had one before and ABC wanted to get in on that sweeeeeeeet revival $$$, with Will and Grace having just made their reasonably well received revival.

I'm really disappointed that Roseanne let everyone down. I liked that there was a show where it wasn't all about American Liberals spouting off. There are enough of those ...

It's a combination of Roseanne, Sara Gilbert and others shopping a revival, the numerous recent revivals of other shows like The X-Files, Twin Peaks, Will & Grace, Full House, Arrested Development, etc., a promise of almost all of the cast to return, and a desire to capitalize on appealing to Trump voters (the show was approved months after his inauguration).

I have to admit I wasn't a fan of her or the others humour but I think ABC is wussing out. They should've fired her if they wanted to make a stand. Kevin Spacey anyone?

Who is this critique aimed at?

If it's at ABC, his bigoted behavior took place years before he was hired, whereas Roseanne's were much more recent and continued right up to the present day, so if you're arguing that she should stay, then you should be arguing that he should stay too in order to be consistent.

If it's at liberals, I don't think you're going to find any defending Jimmy Kimmel's behavior there, as the old Man Show and some of his other work was incredibly misogynistic and racist. Nor are liberals responsible for taking Roseanne off the air. The same executives who hired her are.

You mean fire her and keep the show running without her? As much as I disagree with her behavior and views, I don't see that being feasible. Roseanne is the driving force behind the show. It wouldn't be the same without her. Better to just take the whole show off the air than to try and do it without her.

Two wrongs and all that. I think Roseanne was so wrong herself. People should have to face consequences but in the process she just gave the haters a buzz.
Haters? Do you mean the people who agree with her, meaning fellow racists who actively hate people or the people who hate racists?

Cancelling the show IS firing her.

Hiring the racist conspiracy monger was their first mistake. I'm surprised it took this long for her idiocy to bite them in the hand.

I could go for a Darlene spinoff.

Well that sucks. Now we’ll never Know if she will survive the surgery. Not to mention whether Darlene and David make up.
Doesn’t she know what to do with racist jokes? You tell them anonymously over the Internet. :)
