A Non-Fan's Re-Watching Journey

Its Maquis not Marquis. "Prime Factors" is one of my favorite episodes, the dilemma is very real to me and doesn't seem forced. Janeway didn't want to break the laws of an alien world, completely breaking the prime directive and her moral code. Yes, we can judge her from a practical point of view and of course I certainly do, but I can understand her position especially as a Picard-esque Starfleet captain. The actions of the crew were also surprising and well realized, great tension as the crew try to get the device to work. State Of Flux is also a good episode in my opinion.
Personally I like Voyager's first season, its a lot better than TNG and ENT's in my opinion.

But yeah, the holodeck stuff is bullsh*t of the highest degree

Again with the holodeck? I dont think there has been any season of TNG or DS9 that has featured the holodeck as much as this season of Voyager, where if it were true to the premise the holodeck shouldn't be featured at all.

That said this was a decent episode if a bit derivative. I'm glad they are keeping Chakotay's Native threads.

It was fun to see Dr. Geiger :)

Maquis and not Marquis.... Lol, at least I wasn't calling them Earls. :p I'll remember that.

The prime directive doesn't apply, at all.

I understand not wanting to break an alien civilizations laws, but not to the degree she went to. I think it would be a little 'white' law breaking that could do a lot towards getting her people home without any terrible consequences.

It has been a long time since I have seen TNGs S1 but I don't recall it being a paragon of awesomeness so I don't disagree there. As to Enterprise, I just saw that last year but I have already forgotten if I rank the four seasons as: ok, bad, good, awesome, or bad, ok, good, awesome, so I'm pretty much in agreement that Enterprise' first season was also quote weak.

S01E14 - Faces

6/10

I really liked Dawson's performance as a human and really disliked it as a Klingon. Geiger is dead :(

Breaking the Prime Directive is still breaking it, whether its a tiny infraction or a big one.
As for "Faces", I like it more than you do but agree that Dawson's acting as a Klingon was awful, her line delivery was so weird, pausing between every word o.O

S01E15 - Jetrel

More holodeck... The episode is pretty good, it doesn't work for me as well as DS9s first season Duet but it's good none the less. It's too bad we didn't get to see Neelix Homeworld and i was surprised by Janeways reluctance to try reconstituting the victims and then the ease with which they gave up after one attempt.

Like I said, the prime directive doesn't apply, it's not a degree of breaking it, they aren't breaking it, at all, because it doesn't apply.

Yes, the word by word delivery of the Klingon lines was atrocious. I see what she was going for, but it simply didn't work.

S01E16 - Learning Curve

"Get the cheese to sickbay!"

Enough with the holodeck already!!!

I enjoyed this episode, seeing Tuvok deal with the jackass Maquis was fun. Another high point was seeing a soaked Kes! Looking like a wet puppy, next to a completely dry Doctor. I though that was cute.

I thought Voyager's first season was pretty average, but I feel that way about TNG's first season, too. DS9's might have been a bit better, but all them beat ENT's first season to pieces. I found much of that season unwatchable--and I quit watching. While I understand that later seasons are decent, I just can't bring myself to revisit the series.

I think you'll find that Voyager's fifth and sixth seasons have some great Trek episodes. Those are my fave seasons.

I thought Jetrel was a superior episode that showed just how great an actor Ethan Phillps is under all that make-up and Neelix douchebaggery. "Learning Curve" was mediocre in my opinion but not bad. And you're right, there is a lot of holodeck crap going on here haha.

If nothing else, watch Enterprise season 4. The terrible Bs are gone and Manny Coto replaces them as the show runner. The seasons is made up of a number of two and three parters which are really some fantastic Trek.

I think Phillips is indeed a good actor, and I quite like the actor playing the evil scientist, he was also good as the Romulan Admiral in TNGs Defector and as Dr. Mora on DS9.

Being the good actors that they are they can really have their emotions come through all of that makeup.

S02E01 - The 37's

7/10

Not a bad episode but nothing great either, I originally had it at 6 but bumped it to 7. The ship landing is interesting. I was very disappointed not to see at least one of the three cities... I mean, they took a long time to describe how great they were, why not just show us? I'm sure they could have made up a painting or even recycled something without it costing too much.

S02E02 - Initiations

6/10

Yay Nog! Another run of the mill episode. Good to see Chakotay get an episode and keeping up his Native heritage.

I guess here is where one of the controversies starts, we see a shuttlecraft being destroyed. This brings the count to:

Torpedoes Fired: 1
Shuttlecraft Destroyed: 1

Yep, its all in the eyes ;-)

I disagree, the eyes are just white balls with coloured dots on them. What I mean was that its great they are able to convey emotions using the rest of their faces even though they care covered up with makeup. But that is a discussion for another thread, in another forum ;)

(Case in point being the ;) smily, its not winking at you with its eye, its winking with its eye-lid)

S02E03 - Projections

7/10

Holodeck! They really should have created a show based on the Jupiter Holo-Programming Centre and not on a starship in the Delta Quadrant. Seriously, who on the writing staff through it would be great to have a holodeck scene in every episode on a ship thats starved for power and resources?

That said, almost any Doctor story is going to be decent and thats true of this one.

S02E04 - Elogium

5/10

I really enjoyed Lien's acting in this one, especially eating the flowers and Neelix drags her out of her quarters. Unfortunately thats about the only redeeming point of this episode, well, that and "It appears we've lost our sex appeal Captain".

Oh I see it was sarcasm...phew for that. I genuinely thought you were being serious. Oh and really my point of view that eyes are the most important tool in acting can't be "trounced" as long as actual actors, directors etc agree with me...

S02E05 - Non Sequitur

7/10

I like this episode, I have a soft spot for episodes that show us life on Earth in the 24th century. Wang catches a lot of flack, and I don't think he's a great actor, but so far he's been doing ok.

We've lost another shuttle, putting the count at:

Torpedoes Fired: 1
Shuttles Lost: 2

S02E06 - Twisted

8/10

Holodeck! Yay!

The first 8 thus far. I really enjoyed this episode, everyone had a nice part to play, there were some good character moments: Janeway/Kim, Chakotay/Tuvok, Paris/B'Elanna, and the plot was interesting.
