A Next Gen Reboot?

AFAIK, Jack Crusher died before the loss of the Stargazer, though the circumstances and exact timing is inconsistent.

Though I like the general scope of your concept.

Perhaps Dr Benayoun (per PIC one of the Stargazer's medical staff) could be substituted for Crusher in parts of your concept.

That's sort of what I see happening. I felt there was a decent origin story focused on a young Tasha Yar that would lead up to her joining the 1701-D with all the encounters and experiences you would expect during the build up.

We know where she ends up as far as series finales go, so the trick will be making her backstory engaging and interesting. "Where No One Has Gone Before" definitely gives us a clue and with a dash of horror. "Symbiosis" may be more than a tad sledgehammery at times and many fans remember the flak that got, but - given her background what she endured - her sincerity in saying the after school special bit seems appropriate in what she escaped.

Any character could be developed. But the other variable is... who's the target audience, aka "Who is this made for"? How many established fans want to know the deets of it all? Since everyone keeps mentioning the greater importance of general/casual audiences despite spinoffs usually relying more on established fans, how to make sure the casuals also find the story compelling and to the point they can see season 1 of TNG to become established fans of the character? Which is a tall order, given how inconsistently Tasha is written in season 1...

Baby Wesley saving the day every week.

Sure, why not?
Gene Roddenberry's Trek Babies

What was that line Sisko had in DS9? "It's easy to be a saint when you're living in paradise"? (I may be misremembering it a bit).

Tasha must have had to grind her teeth every time she heard Picard pontificate about how "evolved" humankind had become, given the traumatic events of her childhood and young teen years.

I lost all respect for Picard in Season 1, the minute he opened his entitled mouth and berated Crusher for reviving and treating the 20th century people. He considered them as no better than a waste of time, an inconvenience at best, with his "why bother curing them? They were already dead!" speech.

I don't think humans have evolved by the time of TNG. Picard's lack of compassion and even curiosity about the past shows this. He's got three living, breathing people from the past, and he is not only annoyed that they're alive, taking up space on his starship, but he couldn't care less about actually talking to them and learning about the past from their perspective. He can't wait to be rid of them, so some other ship can have the job of "civilizing" them.

This is why I applaud the character of Lily in the First Contact movie. She does a great job of calling Picard on his hypocrisy and BS.
Don't forget "Hide and Q", where Riker refuses to use his powers to revive a dead girl, and Picard pats him on the back for refusing to do so.

Another thing about a reboot is if they try to do more of a straight reboot they can change things up. For example the Enterprise-D doesn't need to be a Galaxy class ship. Also you can change things up and even introduce characters later on. The gang doesn't have to be their from the very first episode. Like you could maybe do it this way.

1 Picard is captain

2 Yar is first officer

3 Riker is the pilot. His career was hurt in this timeline because of that mutiny he was part of with Locke from Lost. He is more Thomas Riker like in this show.

4 Worf is chief of security from day one.

5 Data was designed to look like a women. Her look was based on Soong's wife who we saw(well android version ayways)

Create 3 new series regulars we have never seen before.

Jack Crusher is still alive and married to Doctor Crusher. The Enterprise has to team up with him and his ship for a episode

Geordi gets assigned to the ship at the end of season 1

Troi replaces one of the new characters who dies in season 2 as the new counselor

I recall there was quite a bit of time between the loss of the Stargazer and Picard taking command of the E-D. What was going on with Picard during this time? Was he working a desk job? Did he take time off from Starfleet? Did he become a pariah in Starfleet because of the Stargazer, and it took some sort of extraordinary action on his part to repair his reputation, enough to be given command of the newest federation flagship? These are some questions that a show (or a mini-series) could explore.

I agree. Their is big void of unknown stuff that happened after the TOS movies and before TNG got started in general as well. Why did it take so long for example to create a new Enterprise after the Enterprise C was destroyed.

I always assumed the loss of the Enterprise-C, despite being a noble cause, was a big morale blow to Starfleet. A lot tragic events seemed to have taken place between TUC and TNG: the loss of the Enterprise-C, the loss of the Stargazer, the Ghorushda Disaster, the Tomed Incident, and the Cardassian Border Wars (and the Seltik III Massacre). The early 24th Century might have seem like a dark time for the Federation until around the time of the launch of the Enterprise-D.

Those do seem like as good as reasons as any. You can also add maybe that they wanted the new Enterprise to be a Galaxy class so they were really saving it until that ship-class came off the assembly line and was tested out with what I assume was the USS:Galaxy.

From design to launch could have been a decade. Especially when it was launching with new features such as holodecks and having families aboard. Something itself that must have been controversial and debated a lot because I doubt everyone in Starfleet would be keen on that idea.

No. There's just no reason to. If you want to do another TNG, just do something in the time period and have a new crew. There's absolutely no reason to replace these things.

The only acceptable way to do it would be a TNG Prequel of sorts, set in the Lost Era with Picard on the Stargazer. I would accept a recast in that circumstance.

I sincerely hope that I never, ever have to see a TNG re-boot. I hate re-boots.

I can't stand the thoughts of seeing Picard, Riker, Troy and the others being played by other actors than, Stewart, Frakes and the other TNG actors.

I never liked the TOS re-boots. They were weak with weak stories which screwed up established Trek history and were played by weak actors. The kind of movies I've watched one or two of, out of sheer interest and then promised to never watch them again.

As for the NuTrek Kirk, I always refer to him as Thomas Kirk because in school I had a good friend whose name was Thomas and he looked like a kid version of Chris Pine. In a not-yet-finished story I've written, a character named Thomas Kirk shows up, a grand-grandson to James T. Kirk. :)

Technically we have already seen Picard played by other actors. The one guy in "Tapestry" and the kid that played his nephew in "Rascals."

There will only ever be one James T Kirk and that's Shatner. (yes, I'm that guy and I wear the badge proudly and unashamedly)

As far as a TNG reboot, good god NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
no-noooo.gif

And of course, someday it will happen :brickwall:

If they think there's money in a reboot, they'll do a reboot. They won't care if some TNG purists hate the show. (Sorry. lol) I remember Sir Patrick saying in an interview years ago that they'll probably reboot TNG one day anyway. So even he knows that this is most likely inevitable.

As for me personally... I used to be dead set against this sort of thing. But nowadays I look at TNG and all the cringey moments it has because it gets more and more dated and I think "hmm maybe a reboot could and would fix this". Doesn't mean I'd watch tho. Would depend on several factors.

Indeed.

I'm not opposed to reboots because the original always exists. But, if there is the opportunity to explore this crew from a different point of view, by different artists. Star Trek has always espoused an egalitarian future and welcome multiple viewpoints. So, why not with a show?

Nothing mandates people watch it. It won't ruin TNG, or take anything away from it.

I will admit that my very first instinct would be to YELL at the mere IDEA of anyone else playing Jean-Luc, but on the other hand I'm older now and more chill than I used to be so I'd probably sit there like "sure fine whatever". And yeah, nobody would force me to watch it. My choice. I could just as well ignore it and just re-watch TNG for the zillionth time. It's not some kind of sacrilege to reboot TNG. And I'm saying this as someone who is pretty much a die-hard TNG fan.

Been a while since I last posted this somewhere. Usually in "The Future of Trek" but it fits this thread. Made a few updates and additions since then.
Some of you might wanna "hold on to your butts". This is a ground up reboot/remix of the 24th Century  Might have gone a little too far off the "Reservation" in the last segment, but was an attempt to bring TNG back to it roots of strange new worlds.

Star Trek: New Frontiers

An epic multi-POV, arc-based series in the mode of Game of Thrones.

In the aftermath of the Federation-Cardassian Wars, the United Federation of Planets has entered in an alliance with Bajor, a planet in a sector of space formerly controlled by the Cardassian Union. With the Federation’s aid, Bajor is attempting to recover from decades of systematic oppression and exploitation by the Cardassians. The area beyond the Bajor Sector remains largely unexplored and the UFP’s Starfleet has assigned three ships to explore and defend the region and has set up a Starbase to coordinate activity.

Deep Space Nine- Formerly an orbital Cardassian ore processing station, the Bajoran Provisional Government has turned it over to Starfleet to serve as the base of operations for the defense and exploration of the Bajor Sector and beyond. In addition to Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia, there is a large civilian population on the station that includes Bajorans, Starfleet dependents and other foreign nationals. Shortly after Starfleet's arrival, a stable wormhole was discovered.
  • Admiral Benjamin Sisko- Starfleet Commander for the Bajoran Sector. Sisko is a veteran of the Cardassian Wars. His wife, Jennifer died during the war and his son Jake lives with him on DS9, but he has misgivings about them being so close to the Cardassian border. Sisko is a Commodore at the show's start.

  • Colonel Kira Nerys- Bajoran Liaison Officer. Kira was a member of the Bajoran Resistance during the Cardassian Occupation. She is still wanted in the Cardassian Union for terrorism. Kira coordinates activities that involve Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia. She’s uncomfortable with Starfleet’s presence and feels Bajor has cast off one yoke for another.

  • Commander Calvin Hudson- Sisko’s adjutant and old friend. Cal spent the war behind Cardassian lines coordinating a guerilla war in occupied territories, some of which remained in Cardassian hands following the war’s end. Like Sisko he lost his wife in the war. He’s outspoken on his views about peace with the Cardassians.

  • Commander Katherine Pulaski- Chief Medical Officer. A veteran officer with strong opinions, she's often a thorn in the side of Sisko and his unofficial conscience. She's also fond of needling Tuvok and has a low opinion of "spies.” Oddly enough, she’s developed a close friendship with Garak.

  • Lt. Commander Tuvok- Starfleet Intelligence. A Vulcan, Tuvok oversees various ongoing SI operations in the sector. Some of which might be above Sisko's "pay grade”.

  • Lt. Rom- Chief Operations Officer. A Ferengi in the Bajoran Militia. Rom oversees keeping the station running. Given its blend of Federation, Cardassian and Bajoran technology it is a task that keeps him busy around the clock. His brother is Quark and through this connection Rom is often able to find the equipment he needs to keep the station going. Though exactly how and where is best left undiscussed. He has a past with Kira and the Resistance.

  • Chief Constable Odo- Head of Law Enforcement for the station. A shapeshifter of unknown origin, Odo was raised on the station by Bajorans. He’s strongly attached to the station and sees it as his only home. While nominally in charge of civilian law enforcement, Sisko likes to use him for Starfleet operations as well.

  • Ambassador Deanna Troi- An empath who’s half human and half Betazoid, Troi is the sector’s Chief Diplomatic Officer, she divides her time between DS9 and the Enterprise. As a civilian, she's not always greeted with open arms by Starfleet. Her goals are often at odds with Admiral Sisko’s and Commander Tuvok’s. Picard is more open minded and she prefers the Enterprise to DS9

  • Ambassador K’Ehleyr- The Junior Diplomatic Officer to the Bajoran Sector. Half Klingon and half human, K’Ehleyr is fun loving, wisecracking and hard drinking. She gets along well with Sisko and is buddies with Quark. Worf, the father of her son Alexander, is often embarrassed by her “antics.”

  • Quark- A Ferengi merchant who runs a casino on DS9's promenade. He is also heavily involved in various criminal activities in the sector. As such, he and Odo have an adversarial relationship. He’s also a prime source of information for Tuvok, for a price.

  • Garak- A Cardassian tailor who runs a shop on the promenade. He is the only Cardassian still on the station. His reasons for staying are currently a mystery. Though Tuvok certainly has a few ideas.

  • Dukat - A Gul in the Cardassian military. Dukat is the former Prefect of Bajor and presided over the transition from the Cardassian Union to the Bajoran Provisional Government. Currently he is the military commander for the Cardassian territory adjacent to the Bajor Sector. He would very much like to be Prefect of Bajor again.
  • Jake Sisko- The young son of Commodore Sisko
  • Nog- The son of Rom and Jake’s best friend

  • Kassidy Yates- A freighter captain and friend of Sisko.

  • Keiko O’Brien- The wife of Miles O’Brien. She runs the station’s school.

  • Alexander Rozhenko- The son of Worf and K’Ehleyr

  • Kai Winn- The religious leader of the Bajorans
The USS Enterprise- A Galaxy class vessel, the Enterprise is the newest and most advanced ship in Starfleet. Its primary mission is exploring and establishing diplomatic relations with the new worlds beyond Bajor.

  • Captain Jean-Luc Picard- The ship's Commanding Officer. Picard is a man weary of war. The prospect of commanding a mission of exploration and diplomacy has kept him in Starfleet. He’s haunted by his past, including the loss of nearly half the crew of his previous command, the Stargazer, during the war. Because of this, he keeps his current crew at a distance.
  • Commander Elizabeth Shelby- The ship's Executive Officer. Called “Number One” by Picard. She's all business, all the time and isn't afraid to speak her mind if she thinks Picard (or anyone else) is wrong. She has high standards and if she had her way the crew would be drilling around the clock. She served with Picard on the Stargazer.

  • Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher - The ship's Chief Medical Officer. The widow of Jack Crusher, Picard's former XO and closest friend. Her son is in Starfleet, and she worries about his future.

  • Lt. Commander Michael Eddington- The ship’s Chief of Security. Eddington is a veteran of the war and still suspicious of the Cardassians

  • Lt. Commander Leah Brahms- Chief Engineer. Brahms is the Federation’s leading expert in warp field theory. During the war she was “drafted” into Starfleet. As such she’s not much for Starfleet procedures and protocols. Many in the crew call her “Professor.”

  • Lt. Commander Data- Chief Operations Officer. An android of unknown origins. As an android wishing to become more "human" Brahms finds him fascinating. Despite the time he has spent in Starfleet, Data still doesn’t quite have a grasp on the nuances of human behavior. He often speaks his mind without a filter.
  • Lt. Worf- The ship's Klingon tactical officer. Worf was orphaned at an early age and raised by humans yet is fiercely proud of being Klingon and sees himself as a “warrior.”

  • Ensign Ro Laren- The ship's Flight Control Officer. Born in a Bajoran refugee camp, she'd never been to Bajor before this assignment. She's at odds with native-born Bajorans, who see the refugees as cowards who chose to flee rather than fight. Because of this Ro has a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Life in the camps has given her a cynical hard-edged attitude.
The USS Defiant- A Defiant class light cruiser, at least on paper. The Defiant is a warship, part of the legacy of the Cardassian Wars. Its crew is small, and most are experienced combat officers. Its primary mission is the defense of the station and the Bajor system. It also serves as the flagship for the Sector Commander. The Defiant Class is Admiral Sisko’s “baby.” Along with Brahms and Data, he developed the design in his previous post at the Utopia Planitia Shipyard on Mars.
  • Commander William T. Riker- The Defiant's Commanding Officer. Riker comes across as a genial sort, quick with a joke and a twinkle in his eye. He's also known to have an eye for the ladies. In a combat situation, he's all business. A clever commander with a trick or two up his sleeve. He’s been in command of the Defiant since before the end of the war. He served under Sisko in the past.

  • Lt. Commander Chakotay- The ship's Executive Officer. Chakotay's homeworld was on the frontlines of the Cardassian Wars and now lies in Cardassian territory. He’s still bitter towards the Federation for abandoning his people.

  • Lt. Ezri Tigan- Medical Officer. Tigan is Combat Field Medic and provides backup for the EMH. An unjoined Trill, who's not on the candidate list, she lives life to the fullest.

  • Lt. Tasha Yar- The ship's Chief Security Officer. Growing up as an orphan on a failed colony, where every day was a fight for survival, she keeps to herself and tries to avoid making attachments. Ezri has made it her mission to bring Yar out of her shell.

  • Lt. Geordi La Forge- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. Blinded in the Cardassian Wars, La Forge can interface with the ship's systems through his VISOR, a device that enables him to see. As such he feels and senses what the ship does. At times this seems to cut him off from his crewmates and he wonders if he is losing his humanity.

  • Ensign Sam LaValle- Flight control officer. Gung-ho and eager to please he looks up to Riker and hopes to impress him. Unfortunately, he also tends to put his foot in his mouth.

  • Ensign Harry Kim- Operations Officer. Young, idealistic, and impressionable, he feels out of place on a ship designed for war.
  • Petty Officer Seska Ghel- Tactical Officer. A Bajoran who has served in Starfleet since before the war. Seska was born on Bajor but raised in Bajoran settlement in the Federation. The refugee ship she was on was rescued from a Cardassian attack by a Starfleet vessel. As such she is very pro-Federation/Starfleet. Which places her at odds with some Bajorans, including Col. Kira.

  • EMH- Experimental Medical Hologram. A new technology currently being tested on the Defiant by its inventor, Dr. Louis Zimmerman, who is on board. (Or is he?)
The USS Voyager- An Intrepid class scout ship. Its primary mission is science and exploration. Most of its crew are in the Science division and the rest is comprised of young officers, some just out of the Academy. Because of this, the ship has been nicknamed "The School Bus". Voyager discovered the Rift located in an area of Bajoran space called the Badlands. Voyager spends most of its time away from the Bajor Sector in unexplored territories on the other side of the Bajoran Wormhole and the Rift.
  • Commander Kathryn Janeway- The ship's Commanding Officer. Formerly in the Science Division, this is Janeway's first command. The thrill of the "hunt" is what drives her. She needs to know what's behind the next nebula and beyond the farthest star.

  • Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax- The ship's Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer. A joined Trill, Dax can call upon decades of experience from her previous hosts. Which is at odds with her youthful appearance. A close friend of Sisko in her previous host, he still calls her "The Old Man". A name that followed her to Voyager.

  • Lt. B'Elanna Torres- The ship's half-Klingon Chief Engineer. She served on the frontline in the Cardassian Wars and was a POW in a Cardassian labor camp. She is wary of having to make nice with the Cardassians. She feels out of place on a ship of scientists and overachievers.

  • Lt. Julian Bashir- The ship's Chief Medical Officer. Young, inexperienced, and on his first deep space mission, Bashir is out of his element and tries to cover it up with bravado. O'Brien has taken him under his wing.

  • Lt. Tom Paris- Flight Control Officer. Cocky and self-assured almost to the point of arrogance, Paris is on board Voyager as a favor to Admiral Owen Paris, Janeway’s former CO. Paris has been a disciplinary problem (and embarrassment to his father) in the past. Voyager is his "last chance.”
  • Lt. j.g. Annika Hansen- Science Officer. As a child, Hansen was found alone on her parents’ science ship drifting through space. Her parents’ fate and the nature of their mission remain unknown. Raised by her uncle, Admiral J P Hansen, Annika entered Starfleet Academy and excelled at computer science. She is at times plagued by voices in her head. Only Dr. Bashir is aware of this.
  • Ensign Wesley Crusher- Operations Officer. A gifted young man, Crusher completed Starfleet Academy in record time with high marks. He's the youngest member of the crew and very aware of this, as such he is overeager to prove himself. His mother is the CMO of the Enterprise

  • Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien- The ship's Tactical Officer. The real old man aboard the ship, he has a decade on most of the crew. A veteran of the Cardassian Wars, he's one of Janeway's trusted advisors and a father figure to the younger crewmen. (Just don't tell him that). His wife, Keiko, lives on DS9 with their daughter.
Beyond the Wormhole The Wormhole leads to the Gamma Quadrant and a host of new species that dwell there. Within the Wormhole are the non-linear beings worshiped by the Bajorans as The Prophets.
  • The Dominion- A confederation of worlds in the Gamma Quadrant. Its exact nature and organization is unknown. The leadership, known as the Founders, only acts through intermediaries, usually a Vorta.
  • The Vorta- The “spokespecies” for the Dominion.
  • The Jem’Hadar- A race of soldiers engineered by the Dominion.
  • Weyoun-A Vorta who claims to represent the mysterious Founders,
Beyond the Rift- The Rift is located in the Badlands, a dangerous and unpredictable part of space near the Cardassian border, with subspace eddies and currents that are hazardous to most ships attempting to cross it. The Rift itself leads to a sub-space dimension containing a graveyard of ships. Commander Dax’s theory is that it’s the remanent of a Transwarp conduit created by the El Aurians who were fleeing an unknown enemy. The El Aurians may have sabotaged the Transwarp conduit as a trap for their pursuers. With the right harmonics in place, the Rift leads to the Delta Quadrant and elsewhere.
  • The Collective- Delta Quadrant races live in fear of the ever-encroaching Collective. The Rift is being used by refugees to slip into the Alpha quadrant, despite the danger. This influx of people into Bajoran and Cardassian space places Bajor and the Federation in an awkward position and at odds with the Cardassian Union. Species attempting “the crossing” include the Kazon, Vidiians, Haakonians and Talaxians. Many have been captured by the Cardassians and placed in labor camps.
  • El Aurians- A species known for listening, who originated in the Delta Quadrant. Their homeworld was destroyed centuries ago and many fled to other parts of the Galaxy. They are rumored to have created The Rift.
  • Haakonians- A humanoid species who invaded Talaxian space several decades ago, causing an exodus of Talaxians. The Haakonians themselves were pushed into Talaxian space by a species who invaded their own.
  • Kazon- The species who control the sector in Delta Quadrant side of the Rift. The Kazon are divided into several factions. The Kazon-Ogla control the planet Ocampa and access to the Rift. They decide who can travel through the Rift.
  • Ocampa- Natives of the planet Ocampa who are in servitude to the Kazon-Ogla. The species matures rapidly and has a seven-year lifespan. Their home world contains a device that controls the Rift, once used by a being called The Caretaker. The Caretaker's species may have created the Ocampa as a "servant race".
  • Talaxians- Natives to Talax, many Talaxians fled their world when it was conquered by the Haakonians and lead a nomadic existence.
  • Vidiians- A humanoid species afflicted with a disease known as the Phage.
  • Neelix-A Talaxian merchant who has offered his services as a "native guide”
  • Kes-Neelix's companion, an Ocampa. Kes is naïve but very curious.
  • Jal Jabin- Mage of the Kazon-Ogla and currently the warlord controlling the sector the Rift is located in.
Beyond Known Space The region past Cardassian and Bajoran space is unexplored. With the war over and the alliance with Bajor granting the Federation a toehold, Starfleet has begun to send ships and probes into the region, including the Enterprise.
  • The Commonwealth of Worlds- A vast interstellar nation-state that lies beyond Cardassian and Bajoran space towards the Galactic Rim. They’ve just begun to turn their attention corewards to the Alpha Quadrant. Like the Federation they contain multiple species across many worlds. The core of the Commonwealth is the Inner Worlds, all inhabited by races transplanted from the planets in or near Federation Space by the Preservers. Other members come from the Outer Worlds. The citizens of the Commonwealth speak the Common Tongue, a language based on the ancient Earth language Akkadian.
  • Agadki- An Inner World populated by descendants of humans brought from Akkad in Mesopotamia circa 2168 BCE, before its destruction.
  • Amultu- The word for human in the Common Tongue.
  • The Armada- The Commonwealth’s space fleet, built around large ships called starcrusiers. They are mobile bases that house fighter squadrons and ground troops. The Armada is much more military oriented than Starfleet.
  • Būdītu- An insecto-humanoid race from the Outer World of Ula. Known for their architecture, silks, and mead. The planet is controlled by the Matriarchal Council who are rarely seen by outsiders. They are served by the Paters and Sorors.
  • The Erkishal- An elite group of soldiers assigned to protect members of the Parliament and high-ranking members of the Armada. They are noted for their black armor and uniforms. Their uniforms contain symbology associated with the Mesopotamian goddess Ereshkigal. Its membership is exclusively female and recruited from the Inner World of Termiskyr .
  • Gol- An ancient philosophy brought from Vulcan by the M’Sharan. Practitioners are called the Wardens of Gol. Senior Wardens are called Adepts. Those in training are called Acolytes. The leadership is known as the Elders of Gol. All species are welcome. The Elders have often served as advisors to the ruling class of the Commonwealth. The Acolytes are chosen for their psionic aptitude and are trained in its uses.
  • Himaava- A Outer World inhabited by the Shuti. Himaava is noted for its cold arctic-like environment.
  • M’Shara- An Inner World first settled by descendants of Vulcans known as the M’Sharan, who were brought from the city of Gol before its destruction prior to The Time of Awakening. The M’Sharan are very active in the Commonwealth’s commerce, controlling various industries and large merchant fleets.
  • Mekhane - Artificial life forms used for various tasks in the Commonwealth. Usually seen as property. Most high-ranking members of the Armada and the Commonwealth upper class have human-form mekhanes as servants. Others are decidedly non-humanoid in shape.
  • Mynos- An Inner World populated by descendants of Minoans brought from Earth following the Thera eruption in 1600 BCE. The first Mekhane were created on Mynos.
  • Parliament- The capital world of the Commonwealth. A planet-spanning city that houses the Commonwealth’s legislative government which is also called Parliament. The legislature has two components, the Inner House is made up of representatives of the Inner Worlds and the Outer House representing the Outer Worlds. The head of State is the High Magistrate.
  • Preservers- A mysterious group of aliens known for transporting endangered groups of sentients from their homeworlds to other planets. The Commonwealth has a high concentration of “Preserver Worlds.” Some of the Commonwealth’s technology is reverse-engineered from Preserver technology.
  • Shuti- A tall anthropoidal species native to the planet Himaava. Known for their tenacity, strength, and loyalty, they are highly valued as soldiers and mercenaries. Most Shuti have silver-white hair over much of their bodies.
  • Termiskyr- An Inner World populated by humans transported from ancient Scythia on Earth. Home to an elite group of women soldiers called the Erkishal. Natives are known as Termiskyra.
  • Ula- An Outer World inhabited by the Būdītu. Noted for its cities full of techno-organic wonders. They have a long standing rivalry with Mynos.
  • Brigadier Eshtah – Commander of the Mušḫuššu Class Commonwealth starcruiser the Amar. Eshtah is a Termiskyra Amultu.
  • High Magistrate Inkedo- The leader of the Commonwealth’s Parliament. An Amultu.
  • Ka-šinā-ešrā- A human-form Mekhane who serves Brigadier Eshtah, but is secretly part of an underground movement fight for the rights of the Mekhanes,
  • Outer Magistrate Kherchaac- The Shuti leader of the Outer House and former member of the Commonwealth military.
  • Elder Nhim- A wizen M’Sharan practitioner of Gol. Her exact age is unknown but may predate the founding of the Commonwealth. She represents Gol interests in Parliament
  • P’Malyn- A Mynosan Amultu, the former Science Magistrate of the Commonwealth, now in self-exile in an area of Parliament called The Junkyard. There he directs the underground Mekhane rights movement. He is a cyborg.
  • Inner Magistrate T’ahl- A M’Sharan merchant and leader of the Inner House. He is eager to see what new markets contact with the Federation will bring.
  • Science Magistrate Zlev- A Būdītu Soror who is keenly interested in the technology of the Federation.

VFX USS STARGAZER IN ORBIT AROUND BAJOR

CUT TO:

INT BRIDGE USS STARGAZER

CAPTAIN JEAN LUC PICARD gazes at the forward viewscreen. On it is displayed the planet, Bajor. Behind him are several supernumeraries, hard at work at their stations, including ELIZABETH SHELBY, then a lieutenant, at Tactical. Picard is a middle-aged man, just beginning to gray.

PICARD

Has the landing party made contact?

From a station behind him, the COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER replies

COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Yes, sir. COMMANDER CRUSHER is hailing us.

PICARD

On screen. Number One, do you read me?

The screen shifts to a view of COMMANDER JACK CRUSHER. Crusher is a tall handsome man of about thirty. Behind him are his Away Team, Bajoran workers and a squad of Cardassian soldiers. In the distance is an excavation site.

CRUSHER

This find is amazing, Captain. I can see why the Cardassians and Bajorans called us in on this. It will shed a lot of light on the history of this sector and origins of the Prophets.

Behind Crusher, the Cardassians are having a brief conversation. One speaks into a communication device and then to the rest of the squad. Then the squad moves toward the Away Team.

CRUSHER

You really must beam down here. We could use your expertise. There are bas reliefs showing

The screen suddenly goes blank.

PICARD

Comms, what just happened?

COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

No idea, sir. All channels just went down. Running a diagnostic. Wait, I’m getting an urgent communique from Starfleet Command.

PICARD

Shelby, what does tactical say?

CUT TO:

EXT BAJOR THE KENDRA VALLEY RUINS

The area is full of lush vegetation that partially covers the ruins. Equipment and shelters are set up near an excavation site.

The Cardassian soldiers have opened fire on the Starfleet team and Bajoran workers. Several have fallen, killed or wounded. Jack Crusher and two other Starfleet officers, STARN a Vulcan and JOHNSON a human, are crouched behind a partially collapsed wall. Cardassian disruptor fire all around them.

CRUSHER

Crusher to Stargazer. We are under attack. Emergency beam out requested. Starn, any luck with your communicator?

STARN

None, Commander. They seem to be blocking all communication.

Johnson stands to return fire, but is cut down by Cardassian disruptors. The Cardassians move in.

CUT TO:

INT BRIDGE USS STARGAZER

From the tactical station, Shelby swings her chair around to face Picard

SHELBY

Captain, I have two Cardassian ships moving toward us on an intercept course, weapons hot.

COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Message from Command, sir. We are at war with the Cardassian Union.

PICARD

Transporter room lock on the Away Team and beam them up. As soon as they’re on board I want maximum warp to Federation space.

The bridge rocks as the ship is hit by weapons fire. The lights flicker and alarms sound.

CUT TO:

VFX SPACE BAJOR ORBIT

The Stargazer is hit by Cardassian disruptor beams. It’s shielding flashes with each strike. The shields grow weak in some areas and the ship is damaged.

CUT TO:

INT BRIDGE USS STARGAZER

The bridge is swathed in red as emergency lights flare.

SHELBY

Shields are holding, but we can’t take much more. Those are top of the line warships and we’re just a 30-year-old science vessel.

PICARD

Do you have them, transporter room?

CUT TO:

INT USS STARGAZER TRANSPORTER ROOM

From over the shoulder of the Transporter officer we see several figures materialize. Once they do, two of the standing figures, Crusher and Starn, collapse. Both bodies have several disruptor burns on them.

CUT TO:

INT USS STARGAZER BRIDGE

Picard is tense, his hand on the comms button of his chair.

TRANSPORTER OFFICER (V.O.)

We have them sir (pause) but Commander Crusher and his team are dead. Disruptors at close range.

Picard slumps into his chair.

PICARD

Helm, let’s get the hell out of here.

DISSOLVE TO:

VFX USS ENTERPRISE IN ORBIT AROUND BAJOR

CUT TO:

INT USS ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

10 years later, the bridge of the USS Enterprise. Once again Picard is looking at the planet Bajor on the viewscreen. Picard is visibly older. His hair grayer and the wages of war have lined his face. From behind he is approached by DOCTOR BEVERLY CRUSHER, the ship’s Chief Medical Officer. Crusher is fortyish woman, tall with a dancer’s build.

DR. CRUSHER

Has it changed much?

PICARD

From orbit it looks much the same. The same as it did when Jack died, I’m sorry. After all he was your husband.

DR. CRUSHER

And your best friend. I don’t blame you Jean-Luc. You couldn’t have known.

PICARD

But I should have known. Starfleet sent a ship to the heart of Cardassian space, knowing full well negotiations with the Union were breaking down. All to look at a pile of rocks. I had to fight for every light year to get to the Federation border. And it cost dearly.

DR. CRUSHER

But you got them home.

PICARD

To fight in a war. I joined Starfleet to be an explorer, not a soldier. With this war over, maybe I can be an explorer again.

Maybe. I'd certainly be interested in seeing that, though I'm not sure if I'd watch a whole show of it. But if it ever were to happen (which, in truth, I doubt) I'd give it a shot.
