Why do I care about a glossy photo of Patrick Stewart and why is it costing them $3 million dollars to build a model?

Uh, no.

I'd rather see one built independently by people who just want to do it.

All this crowdfunding crap pisses me off. I could say more, but I'll leave that there.

Um, is this OP spam?

And needing to raise $3 million? Wasn't the original TMP model sold at auction a few years back for around $250,000? Let's just quadruple the offer for that, buy it back, and party like hell with the other $2 million.

How much did it cost to build and paint the original TMP Enterprise in 1978? Bear in mind we're talking about an eight-foot self-lit model here. Take that and calculate it up to 2014 dollars...

...and it still doesn't add up to three million. Quantum Mechanix produced a three-foot version that could easily be shot for an actual TV show, and it only comes up to five grand. Scale that up 2 1/2 times and you've got the studio model, so maybe $12,500? Timeslip Creations is building not one but two studio-scale models of the TMP Enterprise right now - doubt they've got 6 million lying around.

Of course, those companies have 3D printers, LED lights and other modern advances. If I'm reading Olsen right, he wants to do it exactly the same way it was done in '78: Same tools, same materials, same methods.

Mmmmm. Nope. And, seriously, $3 MILLION?

Priorities, always priorities. Apparently he needs $24 grand to hire a top-notch public relations firm before he can even start the project. And then he wants a documentary about it.

In what way is this spam?

It was just a question. My apologies if you took offense. It probably isn't. It's just that it was your first post ever on the board, it's a link to a site trying to raise money, and I'm just too cynical, I guess.

What's your opinion on the topic? Would you contribute to this cause? Do you agree that $3 million seems to be an awfully lot of money for the project?

I think the questions regarding spam are related to this section of the FAQ:

Soliciting: Do not attempt to solicit other BBS members: posting to sell or endorse a product or web site will not be permitted.

Hi Franklin! I'm not offended I just couldn't work out how I might be spamming! As far as donating to this cause then yes I'm in. The ultimate $3 mil price tag is not just for the model. It is for locating a premises in LA, buying the machinery required to create the parts, paying salaries to the original model builders who are all top Hollywood special fx people and paying them for up to 16 months. It's a huge task! Not just some guys building a model in their garage.

Don't underestimate "some guys". I'll wager they'll get more bang for the buck than some dream team with access to more resources than the entire GNP of Durkadurkastan.

Never underestimate "some guys":

A physical model of the Phase II Enterprise done by Shaw. When I see what "some guys" can do, it makes the $3 million dollar price tag of this project laughable.

No criticism of David Shaw and his brilliant work is intended! Not sure how you got that idea! The "new" ENTERPRISE is a second model from the same creators as the original. All of these people who are involved with the project, Jim Dow, Richard Taylor, Ron Gress, Mark Stetson and Paul Olsen have since forged spectacular careers in visual effects. The ultimate cost of development will be what it will be! What matters most is getting the project started and putting back on public display a treasured artifact that all Star Trek fans around the world can get a chance to enjoy.

3 million, Really?

Give me a break. I don't really care if it's the original team or not; 3 million for a recreation of the miniature is insane!!

According to The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the model of the Enterprise cost around $150,000 to make. In today's dollars, that's $530,000. So, wanting to make a replica of the TMP Enterprise wouldn't be cheap. But if it can be done for that or even a little more (and today it might even be done cheaper with newer technology), it seems hard to justify another $2.5 million in what would essentially be administrative costs.

There are also some important questions left unanswered in the pitch:
-- will the new company that will be formed be non-profit or for profit?
-- what happens to any equipment, supplies, and other items bought with donations when the project ends?
-- who will own the model?
-- will it be donated to a place like the Smithsonian?
-- will it go on tour for display and not have a permanent home?
-- will it be on display for free?
-- what happens to donations if the project is underfunded and can't be launched?
-- what happens if the project needs more money to continue or it will stop short?
-- what happens to donations if the project comes in under budget?

I'd need to have all those questions and probably some others answered before I even gave a nickel.

Edited to add: the model wouldn't be a "treasured artifact," it would be a newly made replica. If having a true "artifact" is so important, then try to find out who owns the original model, see how much the person would be willing to sell it for (everyone has a price), and try to spearhead a movement to raise that money. Then when it's bought through all the fan donations, give it to the Smithsonian or a similar place on the stipulation that it must go on periodic public tours so as many fans as possible get a chance to see it. Then, everyone gets the real thing.
