A Need For TOS

TOS is like comfort food that also makes me think. Some days I enjoy the show on a superficial, curl-up-on-the-couch-and-take-in-some-60's-space-adventures level. Other days I watch it for its messages and morals. There is really no other show quite like TOS, not even the other Star Trek shows. It is truly one of a kind.

We all enjoy Star Trek and, in particular, The Original Series but does anybody else other than me sometimes have a need to watch it? Obviously, I enjoy watching it anyway but some times these days I find myself having some sort of visceral need to get away from modern television programs, from the aesthetics and often depressing stories and plug into the more vibrant and optimistic Original Series.
I watched Star Trek as a kid in the 90s. Funnily enough, with TNG around and DS9 having not long started, TOS was still the first series I watched. When I go back and watch it today it, it make me feel nostalgic about the first time I watched it. And I still love it!

I'm ashamed to say I just realized it's been several weeks since I watched TOS. :alienblush:

I'll have to fix that this weekend.

I watch it for the ideas, but I sortof upgrade those ideas in my mind to bring it up to speed with the latest techno-scientific thought.

I'm watching "The Doomsday Machine", and the thought occurs to me: if McCoy had done his job and taken Decker, who was possibly in shock, to Sickbay, the episode would've played out very differently.

And if he could keep the Commodore there during a red alert. Not being a "moon shuttle conductor" withstanding, he often couldnt keep Kirk there!!

Just hung the Enterprise diagram poster I got from Half-Price Books by my computer desk. It is weird the hold TOS has had on me for the last 45 years.

I'm 32, grew up on 24th Century Star Trek, and I even I find myself watching at least one episode of TOS a week. There's just something about that show...

TOS has always been the only series that made me truly dream of being able to travel through space one day and explore other planets. Watching an episode can light up almost any rainy day.

For sure! Today's contents are extremely boring, repetitive and all of them have very bland characters with no sense of purpose. They are not as creative as it used to be, because studios don't want to risk too much money in something completely new. They want to have low risks and maximum profits, which is really bad in terms of new productions.

Yes, I watch brief snippets of some of the shows on the major networks and I think, "How in the Hell did this series get on the air?"

Agreed. Exploring the Final Frontier of space just seems exciting to me. :)

I watch an episode right before going to sleep and just let in play as I fall asleep. My wife and I find the sound effects very soothing. I just started Lost in Space last night on Hulu. Haven't seen that show in years and enjoyed watching it. I for one love 60's TV shows.

Am I the only one who's had dreams featuring the characters? I don't mean anything bad... like you're on the ship or in one of the episodes....
