I just re-watched this one last night. It was always one of my favorite Klingon episodes. I've got a few questions.

Is the TNG crew a little unwilling to cut Mendon some slack? I know he was annoying, and I'd be just as curt with someone who introduced himself by telling me what I'm doing wrong. But the crew came off as a little closed-minded to me by ignoring his "efficiency" suggestions. Data, if no one else, should have been interested.

And you know it's bad when Wesley's giving you a pep talk. Sheesh.

Is it a rule that all Klingon ships have to look like steambaths?

And (though I'm sure this has been covered in someone's fan fic) did Riker take up that Klingon female on her offer? I wouldn't put it past him.

I really liked the Klag/Riker friendship, and Riker knowing when to take a punch. Did they ever follow up with Klag, either on TV or in the novels?

I can't speak to the novels, but I don't recall ever seeing him onscreen again. Missed oppertunity IMHO.

Keith R. A. DeCandido's "Diplomatic Implausability" (TNG #61) has a few pages devoted to a reunion between Riker and Klag, and heavily features Klag. It's one of my most re-read ST books.

I took part of the impatience over Mendon as neophyte hazing, and not completely serious, except maybe Worf.

Wesley was usually pretty peppy, so I don't see why its a prob for him to give a pep talk.

Klingon steam baths..guess this started in STIII, cause in STTMP their ship interiors looked normal...Its just for atmospheric effects to counterbalance the sterility of Starfleet ships.

In TMP, we already had dim red ambience there, on the single set we witnessed. Perhaps it might be better to compare TNG to TAS, where we saw a Klingon interior that was pretty much like the Romulan one from "The Enterprise Incident": bright colors, mainly bluish and greenish hues, to separate the look from the standard Starfleet grey.

ST3:TSfS was somewhere in between: blue walls but some smoky ambience. ST4:TVH went all for the gritty steamy look, but ST6:TUC scaled it back a bit for Gorkon's flagship.

Perhaps Klingons generally build their ships nice and clean, and the new ones actually have brightly colored walls, but the Klingon culture isn't supportive of housekeeping so the grit quickly accumulates and the air grows thick?
