Damn! What a writing crutch it's become! :guffaw:

For those of us who can't visit youtube at work, care to share whatever it is you're talking about in text form?

It shows every use of the sonic screwdriver. Along with a video clip of each use, it goes over each purpose it was being used (or destroyed) for along with who used it (Doctor or otherwise) and keeps a tally on the side. As you can see, the Tenth Doctor has used it over twice as much as all of the Doctors combined!

I didn't even realise the sixth Doctor used it, and am assuming the 7th's use was simply to lock the Master remains away? (I suppose I could watch the damn thing and find out...)

The Sixth doctor had a one-off "sonic lance" which was effectively a sonic screwdriver-type device, and was destroyed in the same episode.

Magic wand, indeed. Here's hoping Moffat (who has admitted to being a fan of the Fifth Doctor) will scale things back a bit. I *like* the thing, but it did have a tendancy in the past few years to be way too useful.

There's also Terror of the Vervoids where he has a device that unlocks locks, but just isn't the sonic screwdriver. Which points out the futility of banning the screwdriver; the writers will just replace it with a new cheat! (Not counted in the video, I assume, because it's not sonic.)

I doubt it, given that Moffat was the first to extend the screwdriver's powers to being a full-fledged medical scanner and made the "reattached barbed wire" joke.

um yes, considering Chris only had 13 episodes he used it more than all but 1 of the Classic Doctors, I blame RTDs for this. I know Moff is guilty as well from the before mentioned barbed wire, to the future sonic screwdriver.

Sarah Jane is just as bad with her sonic lipstick.

I know RTD has argued that the Doctor needs something as he doesn't carry a gun, but I do think the sonic screwdriver is overused. I'd like to see him rely on his wits, and his inate smart arse'edness more! Take the 4th Doctor defeating Taren Capel in Robots of Death with naught but some helium (ok and some laser probes). But also it's used at quite a simple level when it really doesn't need to be. How many times has the Doctor slammed a door and used the SS to lock it? Couldn't he just slam a bolt across or turn a key or something?

I'd never get rid of the sonic screwdriver, but it def needs toning down a bit.

The Lazarus Experiment really held the middle ground on it for me. That scene where Gatiss is looking for him in the chemistry lab, and Tennant rigs everything to where he hits a light switch to destroy the lab? That was so very much how I understand The Doctor: Dangerously Clever. That was the most Doctor-ish of moments to me. No Sonic Screwdriver. No planning. Just spontaneity, guile, and his wits.....all the while, tauting his enemy so effortlessly. Loved it! Wish we could have more of those kind of moments... :techman:
