A Good Romulan Movie, is it possible?

Honestly, anyone with half a brain would realize that the presence of Romulans in NEM had nothing to do with its infinite levels of suckitude.

We are talking studio execs here!

I have always loved the Romulans and the prospect of their culture but I really think Trek dropped the ball with them.

It is one thing to be a bad guy but Trek has protrayed them as aliens who do bad things and pick fights for seemingly no reason at all.
I would have appreciated having them with a bit more back story, perhaps why they became so secrative or reasons for the way they behave rather than "because they are bad guys"

I love the TOS, TAS, FASA, ADB, and Diane Duane Romulans.

I don't know anything about the LUG/Decipher ones. I've been thinking about buying Way of D'Era because I just read Among The Clans The Andorians.

The only TNG Romulan episode I liked was the Troi undercover episode.

I wish the Klingons and the Romulans hadn't been switched for TNG.

For my personal contiunity, They stay the way they were in TOS. TNG- Wolf becomes a Romulan. The Romulans look like Cardassians. The Cardassians become Klingons. The Romulans become Tholians.

It's true the Klingons were overused for the TOS movies. They didn't suck because Klingons were used. They sucked because of baaaaaaaaaaaaaad writing.

Here's to a Romulan movie.

I never understood the need to plant the forehead appliances on them in TNG, they were supposed to be related to the Vulcans, and look interchangeable with them.

What's ADB?

Budget... its what gave us the ridged Klingons after all. I would much have preferred flat headed Romulans...

The forehead changes in TNG were intended to be a revamp similar to the Klingons. Confusingly enough, they didn't have it in their two appearances in TOS movies, both made after the TNG change... but did have it in ENT. Which means bumps in the 22nd century, none in the 23rd century, bumps in 24th century. Doesn't bother me that much, it's mainly cosmetic. Okay, entirely cosmetic. :p

Anyway, the presence of ridge-less Romulans in TFF and TUC suggests the lack of ridges is not entirely for financial reasons.

Romulans were definately at their most fun when they were Elf-Romans with names like 'Decius'. :)

Artistic I'd presume. I don't think Nimoy, Meyer, or Shatner either cared for them or simply didn't see the point to having the ridges.

Romulan motivation is tied into the Vulcan backstory (which makes it very neat and err logical) ;) The Vulcans aren't emotionless; they have stronger emotions than humans, to the extent that it's questionable whether they can have a coherent society at all. What keeps them from just killing each other?

This problem was resolved 2000 years before TOS when Surek came up with the solution, to make a fetish out of emotionlessness and logic. That wasn't just the Vulcans being eccentric; for them it was a necessity.

The Vulcans who didn't agree with this as a solution left and became the Romulans. What solution they hit upon instead is a bit open to question, but it seems to revolve around the idea of using extreme xenophobia to overcome their aversion to each other.

Anyway, if the Vulcans had to get themselves all wound up tightly as a solution, the Romulan solution would also need to be wound-up, extreme and precarious.

That's great stuff and a good writer should be able to make something great out of it. I've seen good stories done from weaker premises than that.

The Romulans have the potential to boot the Cardies out of their current title of Best Star Trek Aliens EVER! :D Romulans have been portrayed so far as a bit too bland. A good actor who understands Vulcans will do what Nimoy did, always give us a barely perceptable undercurrent of tension and danger that keeps our attention on him, the "can't-look-away" factor that makes an actor a scene-stealer.

The Romulans just need to be written, produced and acted by people who understand that they have the same quality as the Vulcans, but it's expressed more overtly in one sense but still covertly in another. I think maybe the Romulans would be more interesting in scenes with other Romulans, and we've definitely not seen very much of that.

I'd like to see a new Star Trek movie with a strong Romulan presence. I'd also like to see a Star Trek movie include numerous old familiar alien races (klingons, romulans, orions etc) in a major role and a few (new to TOS) ones maybe in a cameo role. That was one of the reasons why I enjoyed TOS episode Journey to Babel so much.

I'm pretty sure that's not Troi.

However, whoever it is, Dar's probably getting everyone's votes - for obvious reasons. ;) I think that was certainly part of the rationale behind not using the ridges in TFF...

Vulcan intellect without Vulcan ethics.
Vulcan passion without Vulcan control.

The potential for a great villain is certainly there. Why it's gone unused for 30 years is beyond me.

Face of the Enemy

Looked like her to me.
Though yeah I'm sure part of the motivation was not to make Cynthia Gouw's cute features be buried under a load of makeup.

I'm pretty sure it's occasional stuntperson, background artist & Babylon 5 regular - Patricia Tallman. In TNG/DS9, she usually ends up sitting at a console that's about to explode! So that Romulan role was probably her meatiest Trek part.

I too think the Romulans desperately needed to feature in a movie. By rights, they should've undergone a radical reimagining on ENT, like the Klingons did for TNG "Sins of the Father" onwards. The earlier 22nd/23rd Century versions are the best ones for that treatment, since by sticking to Gene Roddenberry's principles they become tamer, potential Federation candiates the further forward we go.

I thought that Caitlin Dar was far too human looking in The Final Frontier. Perhaps she was of mixed heritage or something.

I would've originally included Tomalak as my main Romulan Big Bad however as the poster pointed out Andreas passed away lsat year and I didn't particularly like the idea of re-casting the Commander...who in the movie would now be a high ranking Admiral with the full support of the Romulan Fleet.

Like I said, not Troi. Never would have guessed Lyta Alexander though. :)

Perhaps for a little clarity, I was suggesting he would have been a better villain than Shinzon for the 2002 film Nemesis, assuming one was limited to using a character from the series. Katsulas made his final performance as G'Kar the same year, ironically enough.

Oh I agree that for the purpose of sinister movie villan that Tomalak would make a great bad guy for Nemesis. The reason I changed it to Sela was mainly because I have a soft spot for Denise Crosby and thought her return would make her a more personal opponent for the Enterprise crew...

Oh and for anyone who hasn't seen Enterprise S4's sweeping three parter Romulan Arc, I recommend it. Picture

A movie with Romulans as antagonists which is a sequel to Trek XI.

Sequel? Why not just put them in ST:XI? It would be a good start.
