A Fistful of Datas Vs. North Star

TNG's "A fistfull of Datas" Vs Enterprise's "North Star". Two of the only two wild west themed star trek episodes.Which one did you like better.

For me it's "A Fistful of Datas". I like the goofy holodeck episodes and it was a real treat to see Brent Spiner cowboy talk and generally act silly. The part near the end where he kisses worf was great. The episode had just enough goof without going into eye rolling territory. North Star wasn't bad in my eyes but I like the lighter fistful of datas better.

Honestly, I don't remember "North Star," so I've gotta go for "A Fistful of Datas," which also has the much better title.

But don't forget "Spectre of the Gun" on TOS, which was arguably the very first Western-themed STAR TREK episode.

I don't remember the Enterprise episode but "A Fistful Of Datas" is one of my favourite Next Generation episodes.

I haven't seen "Spectre Of The Gun" in a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery long time.

Fistful of Datas is clearly the superior episode, if only because it was not meant to be taken seriously as a "true" western story. North Star was just...meh.

Spectre combined a Western with the surreal in a quite interesting way. If you see the episode, you will note that they did more with less. :techman:

You've got to give SotG credit for lampshading their lack of a budget. :)

A Fistful of Datas is a fun episode with a great final shot. I'd really like to think that Worf went back to that program at some point, with or without Alexander. Perhaps it became a dirty little secret for him.

North Star, IIRC, is a mediocre episode that may or may not have any shots that were great. :p

Damn, I completely forgot Spectre Of The Gun. Star Trek at the O.K. corral must have been pretty fresh in the 60s.Guess I need to re watch the OS more then I though.

I prefer "North Star" (and this coming from a primarily TNG fan)... though I also liked "A Fistful of Datas" as well.

1. "Specter of the Gun"
2. "North Star"
3. "A Fistful of Datas"

I agree with this ordering.

Interestingly, I believe (unless I am remembering wrong, which does happen) that "A Fistful of Datas" was the first Star Trek writing credit for Robert Hewitt Wolfe, who would go on to be one of my favorite writers on Deep Space Nine, as well as briefly run the ill-fated space opera Andromeda. I remember this about it (if, again, I remember correctly) more than I remember anything that happens in the episode, though.

With Chekov being "killed", if I'm not mistaken.....

About the only think I remember about "North Star" is the Only Sane Man Reed remembers that Phaser's have a stun setting, so can be used to take hostages out of the equation i.e when he stuns T'Pol.

I don't think I've seen North Star. Nothing about it rings a bell. I thought Spectre and Fistful were the only Western episodes of Trek.

"North Star" for me was classic trek - a little morality tale; Archer's "I don't believe my life is worth anymore than his" line against the racism was nice, and the whole episode had that mix of earnest-point-to-make and hokey fun that some fans hate, but I think really does encapsulate Trek.

I wanted to like A Fistful of Datas, but it came off ham-handed for me, and that last shot was just embarrassing with no funny. Ok, Spiner is in a dress. Haw haw, the wit, she is rapier keen.

Never saw North Star, I've seen little ENT. I was starting to watch more and more and then saw "In a Mirror Darkly" (both parts), and though I liked the episode overall, I thought Bakula was terrible with his overdone side-to-side bouncy swagger and squint, and just couldn't make myself watch anymore.

I wish they'd used something other than a meld in "Spectre of the Gun." So silly, and not in a good way. YMMV.
