Is it mostly a change from the familiar? I'm old...pretty old, and I don't recognize a lot of things anymore. Things change over time, it's inevitable. But I don't have to like it. (grump grump)

I dunno, I’m 36 and probably 75% of the shows I think are best ever happened in the last 15 years.

My favorite music ranges from 1936 to last year, my favorite movies from 1925 to the last year. MY favorite games from 1982 to last year. TV is the one medium where I think the curve skews to the recent.

So my three main TV/Movie loves.

Star Trek
Star Wars
Doctor Who

just seem to have had a severe decline in quality in the last decade. As in the writers just don't seem to "get it" or in the case of Doctor Who since Matt Smith left the stories have just gotten worse (with a couple of exceptions).

I'm willing to accept this is just me getting old, and I'm just not "with it" anymore, is that the case or is what I am saying true?
I don’t think it’s age because I’m old and I don’t agree with you on any of the three franchises you list.

Not sure at what point in these franchises you think the quality began to decline, but have a feeling it’s pretty recent for all.

Bottom line, these franchises have changed and you don’t like the changes. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t think everyone who might be considered “old,” has the same issues with change.

I feel that it's normal to always think that what you liked first is "best." You see this happening all the time, like many older people thinking 60s music was good *shudder*

These lads see your shudder, and raise you being the greatest band there ever was or ever will be.

I think their has been a decline but not a steep decline. Mostly do to things playing it safe for PC reasons and also a kind of oversaturation of political commentary that's really not been all that subtle so it's formed a kind of sameness in every movie and show that does it, except for the great ones who don't fall into the played out clichés. You also have a kind of sameness as well with comic book movies dominating the landscape. What we are missing is things that really push the limits and truly does offend people. That's because Political correctness and political commentary do not work well together. If you want something challenging you actually have to be willing to challenge not just the people it's directed at but also your target audience. Anything else is just preaching to the choir. Also elements that also needs to be relearned is violence is fun. Bad people are fun to watch. Awful behavior makes for better drama when you don't point it out as being awful because the fans can figure that out on their own.

I agree Doctor Who declined sharply since Matt Smith (I finally gave up watching last season), I've loved the modern Star Wars and Star Treks, and very much enjoyed the slew of current sci-fi shows like Lost in Space, Altered Carbon, Westworld and others.

It's a little of both. First, we're all getting older. And second, No, the TV and movies made today simply cannot compare with their counterparts from 40-50 years ago. Of course it was all better then. For me personally, the cutoff was 2003. This stuff just seemed to get worse starting in that year when the focus became more dystopian.

Now, this does not mean that everything produced today is automatically garbage. I for one am glad to see so much Science Fiction being made now. I wish it had happened in the 1970s and 1980s when I was growing up. Almost all of the sci-fi made then was appreciated due to it's rarity, but was more often than not misfires of one kind or another. The shows made today are appreciated, but would have been much better if they had been made by an earlier generation.

I think you’re all just getting older and things you enjoyed as younger people no longer connects with you because it’s made for younger people. It happens.

That's also part of it as well. Probably why the adult driven stuff still feels the same but the genre stuff that is usually geared for a younger audience is the things people most complain about. Like you never see anyone complain about The Wolf of Wall Street or 1917 and so forth as being inferior. Still I think their has been some dip in quality because not everything is disliked. The MCU and Wonder Woman and The Mandorlorian etc are still liked by older audiences.

I think it might be the difference between stuff aimed specifically at young people as opposed to things that tend to be more accessible for a wider audience. Like the CW is clearly aimed at young people but the MCU has been aimed at young people but it explores enough adult themes and older people can relate to. Plus it helps when you bring in actors who have had success in more adult stuff like Robert Downey JR,Scarleet Johannson and so forth. Other than Spiderman they mostly go with older more recognizable stars who have built fan support in other things.

That was the cutoff for you, others don’t see it the same way. You’re just getting older. Some sci-fi got dystopian and others didn’t. 9/11 did have a major impact on all media because our outlook changed drastically, it’s slowly started to slide back. A lot of sci-fi seems to be hopeful but as something we have to work for instead of it just being handed to us.

I don't care how others see it. And yes, I am getting older. I don't need you to remind me of that. Guess what? So are you. One day soon, you too will age out of this stuff and some young know-nothing punk will say something as dissmisive to you as you just did to me.

I have the self-awareness to know it’s due to my age and not some outside influence. There are plenty of things I cannot enjoy anymore, so I don’t watch them and find something new to enjoy. There’s so much media to be found both new and things you missed that dwelling on the past is pointless.

Here's a list of great stuff that has come out since 2003 to counter the notion that everything's gone downhill (note that this list is primarily from television and streaming):
* Attack on Titan
* Arrow and all of its spinoffs
* Battlestar Galactica
* Sailor Moon Crystal
* Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
* The Crown
* NuWho
* Westworld
* Frozen
* The DCEU
* Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy
* The MCU
* Star Trek Discovery
* Disney's The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and Aladdin live-action adaptations
* The Expanse

I could keep going, but that should suffice.

It's pretty much the same with Doctor Who and Star Wars, everything new always sucks. And don't bring up The Clone Wars, when it started people definitely didn't love it. I specifically remember comments about the cheap ass cgi ruining everything.
Oh, I recall that. It makes me laugh so hard when I hear fans go "Oh, SW is so ruined now!" like the ST somehow broke new ground of dividing the fan base. News flash: it didn't.

For me it just depends on the show. I take everything on an individual basis rather than holding up the past as my constant reference point.

Thing is I'm only 37, I really wasn't expecting to be "old" yet.
Why? I am 35 (almost 36) and I definitely know that I am in a much different place than I was 10 years ago.

Older people also seem to forget that there was a lot of crap in the 70s and 80s. You tend to remember only the good things, and then eventually think that's all there was. Many things today are lame, but so was most of the stuff back from those "halcyon days" that never really existed.

I mean, it's totally fine if your favorite shows and movies are from 50 years ago, no one says they can't be. But I feel it seems very foolish to try to say things have objectively gotten worse, and calling young people "stupid."

There were great things made in the past, and there are great things being made now. And future generations learn from what was made before and improve on things, in writing, directing, effects, acting, etc.

As you get older and accumulate experiences, it becomes harder and harder to be impressed. Just life.
