A closer look at Discovery's prop design

Lots of inspired stuff there - even if we can tell what inspired it exactly. And the Andorian helmet is hilariously good.

So the barrel of the S31 sidearm telescopes? I suppose the barrels of the regular Starfleet one don't rotate for real or this would have been showcased. At least not with a keypress. But can the actor twist the business end manually?

Those are amazing. They look modern and updated while still faithful to the original designs. Wish the entire production honored TOS with that much care.

Great work, prop people.

I had no idea Harry Mudd’s helmet was meant for an Andorian. It all makes perfect sense now.

One wonders how much use they will see in DSC from now on. I mean, there are reasons for not ditching the sets, both in- and out-universe - but the props are just gadgets for our heroes in-universe, and they will enjoy access to better gadgets soon enough.

Mass donating of the phasers, tricorders and whatnot to SNW and S31 would appear prudent. In-universe, abandoning the ancient spacesuits, and letting Pike and Georgiou play with them, likewise. But they are likely to be too expensive to be dropped like that. Not to mention custom-built for SMG, Ancheril and... Mm. Actually, there doesn't appear to be a third cast member who'd already have a suit fitted.

That shuttle pod is great. I can imagine that in TOS due to its blockiness, it just needs a simplified paint job.

In DIS and PIC my impression is the prop makers are where most of the fans are in the production teams.

Very cool pics, thanks for posting! I love how Disco has recreated a lot of TOS props "in spirit" ...I hope to someday see their take on the wonderfully goofy phaser rifle from "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

*speaking of phaser rifles, the Starfleet ones pictured at Trek Collective give me Enterprise vibes with that vented shroud over the barrel (looks a lot like the "phase pistols")

I'd argue the DSC phaser rifles are their very take on Kirk's gun. That is, the three rotatable sets of coils are there, prominent in the mid-body.

That Kirk's gun had the long thin barrel and the fancy vertical aiming feature might just tell us that he took the sniper version down to the planet - or pressed the button that extended the sniper barrel and scope, just like the MACO rifles had these extending features available while looking very DSC-like most of the time.
