Courtesy the Doctor Who News Page, 2 Entertain has released a provisional roadmap as to how the final two-dozen Doctor Who DVD releases are expected to play out over the next couple of years. It had been announced previously that they plan to continue issuing DVDs until the 50th anniversary, and they've put out a list of the releases that are expected for 2012.

There remains a number of "unplaced" stories (ie ones we probably won't see till 2013). It's looking as if the final releases are likely to be Jon Pertwee stories. Interesting is the reference to the incomplete stories The Tenth Planet and The Ice Warriors as possible releases (another incomplete story, The Reign of Terror, has already been confirmed for release in 2012). No one knows if this means more animated reconstructions, or if they plan to do what they did with the VHS releases and have someone describe the missing episodes...

Well, as pointed out many times before, it's unsurprising that Mind of Evil and Ambassadors of Death will be among the last ones out.
On Ambassadors, the recolouring of the bits of Ambassadors 2 to 7 which haven't already been recolourised has run into problems, and is going to take longer/cost more than previously thought (I'm guessing that the results from using the chromadot process don't match up well with the previous results from the NTSC/B&W fusion medthod, so that the latter will have to be chromadotted as well, which would roughly double the amount of worked needed. But that's only a guess).
On Mind of Evil, 2 to 6 have been restored using chromadot, but episode one has got to be recoloured by 'hand', which is going to be costly. (So, leave it for now, in the hope that an easier, cheaper, process is developed).

when the hell is terror of the autons out, dammit?!

edit: oh, great, it's out in a boxset with Spearhead, which i've already got, later this month. or i buy a R1 copy and hope it runs on my player...

Day of the Daleks is one i'll be getting...

and my sister has a colour copy of Dinosaurs pt 1 from a US friend. she ought to get in touch!

In the United States, at least, in seven days.

In the UK, it's being released as a box set with Spearhead from Space in six days.

That would actually piss me off, since they've already released SfS twice, and the ONLY way to get TotA in Region 2 is to by SfS all over again.

Nothing about Shada on there? That's disappointing.

I noticed it was missing, too, but that doesn't mean it's been cancelled. It might be something they're looking at for 2013, or it's possible it's not included because it's considered a different project. The list focuses on previously televised stories. Personally, I'm expecting Shada will probably be released around the time the novelisation is published, as that would only make sense.

Which isn't a bad thing at all, as those two stories are rather highly regarded, and frankly I'd much rather see the "final new DVD release" of the line be a well-regarded story than, say, The Twin Dilemma or Time and the Rani.

There's also the question of re-releases. I believe Robots of Death and (I don't think I imagined it) The Three Doctors are getting the Special Edition treatment as is a Colin Baker story though I'm not sure which one. I wouldn't be surprised if The Ark in Space wasn't given a second go as well.
As for the list of stories to come, I hope they hurry up with Ambassadors of Death and Mind of Evil because the videos are taking up a lot of shelf space.

Vengence On Varos. All four are mentioned in the original round-up printed in DWM that the site used.

Which is largely complied from all the Twitter and other news points anyway!

indeed.

you should tell her.

Yep the restoration team's job would be a whole lot simpler if they could access that particular copy.

Not to rain on the parade, but are you sure it's a full copy of episode one, and that it really is episode one? The pessimist in me wonders if it could be a) the extract from episode one that was recoloured a few years ago and has been run at conventions a few times, or b) a copy from the days when episodes two-to-six were run in America as a five parter, and the captions changed accordingly (ie, there are some copies of part two which say 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs episode one' on the opening titles, whereas the actual part one will read 'Invasion episode one').

all i know is, my sister's American friend taped the episodes off PBS and she then copied them on to DVDs and gave them to my sister. i borrowed several of the discs and Dinosaurs was one. i'd swear it was in colour. i'll have to ask...

If it's off PBS, then I fear that it's the relabelled part two. If it opens with the Doctor and Sarah seeing an unconvincing Tyrannosaur, then it's part two.
But CHECK IT OUT! You never know... (One episode of Steptoe and Son was believed lost for ages after the others had been recovered, as the ropey, fragile (not to played unless essential) tape had been mistakenly assumed to be an existing episode).

When PBS Detoit showed the complete Dinosaurs circa early 1990s, the first half hour was black and white. All prints shown on PBS originate from the BBC, so they wouldn't have a "leftover" first episode in color floating around.

If it was in color, then someone colorized it. I've noticed that virtually none of the colorization that was being done in the 1980s and early 1990s (and I remember reading that several Pertwees underwent the process) has made it to DVD, suggesting it was pants for high-resolution archiving. They're using some newfangled technology to restore the color to the Pertwees, which is why they're taking so long to do. (I assume expense is also an issue, since 2 Entertain apparently can't afford to commission any more animated episode reconstructions, so paying for digital recolorization is probably problematic).

Its taking so long to do because the process isn't as straight forward as hoped.

They recorded DVD extras for Mind Of Evil and Ambassadors rather quickly in the hope of a quick release, as a result we will see/hear from Barry and Nick when the time comes.

They are putting off resuming restoration as long as possible, in the hope that when it resumes the software will have been fine tuned further, or at least processing speed should be reduced for any manual clean up.

Of the three stories recoloured in the early 90s only the first one Daemons has yet to be announced. The same colour sources were used for Silurians and Terror as the videos, just combined with a better B&W copy with the studio scenes vidFired to restore their video look.

Wow, that's wonderful to read. While I'm not a fan of The Ambassadors of Death, I love The Mind of Evil, but now I'm looking forward to both just to hear from Barry and Nick.

The Sun Makers will be interesting to see through adult eyes, as this was most likely a story I didn't exactly love as a nine-year-old child.:rommie: I find a lot more to appreciate now, especially when Bob Holmes is the writer.

I also think that Day of the Daleks will be significantly improved with the new Dalek voices. I'm not much for "new and improved" effects, but this is a case where it can only be improved.

As far as my own long-awaited titles, Terror of the Zygons is most definitely the most anticipated, with Ian Marter's best performance; I thought he was *potential minor spoiler below*

...positively frightening as the Zygon double version of himself. I see it now and still think it's quite good.
