Sorry if this was asked before, but when Vastra uses the Brig's old line "well, here we go again", I wondered which other Doctor she might have known (before Smith) to be aware of regeneration.

Do any audios or books cover this?

^ I just assumed that the Doctor had mentioned it to her during some unseen previous adventure. So Vastra may have been aware of what regeneration is, and what it entails, if not actually witnessing it herself.

Vastra not only recognized, but, called The Doctor on Melody/River's DNA Sequence

There was the unseen adventure where he prevented her from killing those underground workers, I just wonder if it's a previous incarnation for the Doctor.

Yeah, he could have explained it to her, but "here we go again" gives me the impression she at least experienced another incarnation, if not an actual regeneration (ala the Brig knowing #2 and #3 before the regeneration into #4).

I've always assumed Vastra met a Doctor previous to the Eleventh, otherwise there's no real reason why she would know about regeneration in A Good Man Goes to War. My guess would be Ninth or Tenth.

Continuity error:

A young-looking 11 calls Clara from Trenzalore and tells her to help his next incarnation. But when 11 was young on Trenzalore, he didn't expect to have a next incarnation. He thought he was on his last incarnation, and was a wrinkled old man when Gallifrey surprised him with a new set of regenerations.

Okay, this is where it gets complicated. Well, really not at all if you pay attention. The 11 that called Clara was after he wiped out the Dalek invasion fleet after the Timelords gave him another set of regenerations. He looked young again for the "reset" (and for Clara).

That's why when Clara went back to the Tardis, the phone receiver was hanging out of the door.

He called her just as the regeneration started, that's why she found the TARDIS's phone off the hook.

Remember in his final scene he reverted to looking young again before the regeneration completed and he became Capaldi? That's when the phone call takes place.

Remember ...

Oh, never mind, I see the others have this covered.

I've found the 'reset' thing a bit weird. Remember Tennant did it too sort of to heal his cuts and bruises for his goodbye tour (and of course his other regeneration in Stolen Earth).

It seems so far that the only real 'traditional' regeneration we've had in the New series is Eccleston to Tennant (and even that was largely different from the classic regenerations which were on the floor). Everything else seems a bit drawn out, or has some other weird catalyst (Such as Mcgann-Hurt)

I've speculated BBC might have requested they wanted the Doctor to be in his "traditional" look for his final scene. If true, it could also have been a factor in why RTD abandoned his plans of dying Tennant's hair gray in TEOT to convey quite a bit of time had gone by for the Doctor since Waters of Mars.

Honestly, I'd have liked to have seen that. At least he might not have been so young by the time he regenerated.

Also, that brings to mind when they aged Tom Baker's Doctor for several centuries in "Leisure Hive", and the rumor that JNT wanted to keep that aged look for the Fourth Doctor until his regeneration, but TB refused. Understandably, although if he didn't object back then, imagine the possibility of an actually aged Tom Baker returning for a further anniversary? Very feasible, I'd imagine.

But its all academic, I suppose. :)

That's an unlikely rumor since they didn't know Tom Baker was leaving til about midway though the season.

It might be weird, but I'm glad they do it this way. It's nice for the actor to have a final goodbye before the full regeneration takes place.
