7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor Who

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

I'm still rooting for Simon Baker.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

I'd be fine with an American actor, but they would have to play the character as British-- heck a Brit plays superman so fair's fair :)

Not to mention

Spiderman
Batman (Nolan Universe)

There are of course others that could be mentioned.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

The Doctor regenerating into a female will always be a bad idea. If the Doctor died and the series was carried on by Jenny or River Song and they took on the mantle of "The Doctor", I would consider that the better option.

The Doctor is one of the few positive male role models for young boys who doesn't shoot at his problems or solve everything by killing his enemies. It's the norm for female role models to be like this, and young girls already have it in spades. Boys need this role model for them. I also think if the Doctor becomes female, he will never be allowed to become male again - the accusations of sexism and misogyny on the part of the show's writers would be impossible to drown out if he went from female to male again.

The whole argument is an attempt to make Dr Who about empowering women when the show is already about empowering everyone. If the Doctor's gender doesn't matter, then there's no compelling reason to change it. If the Doctor's gender does matter, then an argument has to be made as to why. Its not enough to say "because women deserve equality". It's not equality to flip a character's gender mid-series. It gives power to women at the expense of men. Why can't men keep their positive role model who doesn't resort to violence and stupidity? Women do not deserved to be empowered at the expense of men. That's not equality. If women want stronger female lead characters in shows, the solution is for writers to create new ones that can be respected.

I'm npt sure how casting a female Doctor is either empowering for women or PC for that matter. Moffat has already empowered the companions by making the show about them instead of the Doctor, where IMO the attension should be focused on. It'd be nice if the show reached a point where it didn't matter about the gender of the Doctor. But then all this is pure speculation.

At some point they'll just open the casting to anyone and see who they get, and who plays, The Doctor, best.

It's not enough to make the female companions smart, capable, brave and sensible. Nevermind that the show is about humanity being better than the Doctor in many important ways. Feminists want the Doctor himself to be transformed into an icon that they can own. The star of the show should be a woman, they say.

And yes, I understand the need for strong female leads. I applaud every female character who is better than the Doctor. Captain Adelaide from the Waters of Mars was one perfect example. Clara calling out the Doctor in Kill the Moon was another. I love River Song. Killing off the Doctor and making her the lead would absolutely work for the show. The Sarah Jane Adventures worked.

But even with Dr Who magic, it's wrong to transform a lead man into a woman on a show just because some feminists are hungry to assume ownership of what that man is to millions of people. It's counterfeit. Stolen. Unearned. It says that all that is required for a woman to deserve greatness is stomp her foot and shout that she deserves it because some man earned it for himself. It's just a case of female entitlement. Vagina justifies everything. Building up a heroic female character from scratch is true empowerment and equality.

I think in the discussion about boys/girls and heroes for them to aspire to, I think we're missing an admittedly small, but still important demographic, namely those who do not feel comfortable in the gender into which they were born. Gender identity is still something that hasn't been fully explored by tv and film, and from a certain perspective the Doctor is a wonderful character to use to explore this, after all his DNA effectively rewrites itself every time he regenerates.

Admittedly it comes down to execution but what a message to send to children and adults. The Doctor was born a man, and now she is a woman, and that's actually ok, she's still the same person, she'd still a champion of the weak and victimised everywhere.

As I've said till even I'm sick of saying it, it would depend on the actress cast, and it would depend on how the Doctor was written. Really the only issue I can see is what happens when the Doctor regenerates again; if she stays a woman people will whine, and if she returns to a male form people will whine. But then people whined when youngling Smith was hired and whined when an old man was hired so meh, horses for courses.

I don't think that would go over as well as you think Starkers. By definition, each incarnation of the Doctor is "a phase." Having him/her revert to male after a female incarnation would wholly undermine any attempts to use her as a symbol for the transgender community in that way.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Several in this thread have said that they would give a female Doctor a chance if they got a good actress. What if the actress in question were Hayley Atwell?

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Why, that would be simply awesome. :techman:

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

But who would be a proper companion(s)?

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Well, there were a lot of female fans that didn't want a Sylvester McCoy Doctor, either, so I suppose the feeling is mutual. : P

(Although I really enjoyed his final season.)

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

But who would be a proper companion(s)?

Patrick Stewart.

She can be the smart know it all and he could be the confused one needing things explained to him.
