That feels less "updated" and more "Robert Meyer Burnett slightly re-editing OTOY's films together and then reaping the ad revenue as his own", but maybe I'm missing something.

Hey! I wanna do an update too!

EDIT:

This.

It feels like an extended scene that could have easily fit at the end of Generations. My hope is that it ends up in a new edition of the movie at some point. It's a great way of offering closure. Initially I was very confused though, just in the way it was presented.

Actually A LOT and she’s even in the Abrams movies.
Come on, that was as much Carol Marcus as Cumberbatch was Khan...They could have named her Gladys Kromwitz...

Also, Sarah Connor became way more popular as a badass fighter with PTSD than as she was in the first movie
I believe I said exactly that...

I think your personal opinions are getting in the way of actual facts.

Again, personal opinion that is not backed up by actual evidence.
That's quite amusing, whoever the hell you are, since every post you've made in this thread has zero evidence and is ALL opinions...so much for a serious discussion

Moving on:
this article seemed to explain the goings on in a clear way, for those who are interested

Motherhood would diminish Saavik in no way at all. I dont really get the idea of the Saavik-Spock romance however. Men can have a mentoring role with much younger women without sex coming into play. Id like to think so anyway.

It is unfortunate that it took so long to get Saavik back on screen. In Ilia, Decker and Saavik there were good, new characters in the early movies. But they killed off the first two, and seemed to run out of ideas with Saavik. I liked that Chekov was 1st officer of the Reliant, that he went on to other assignments. Sulu finally went on got his ship. Those were good things. They could have cycled out older characters and brought in new ones and kept it going.

Instead, by the end in ST VI, they seem to have settled on the idea that a "crew" (meaning 5 or 6 people in bridge positions, CMO and engineering) serve together and "stand down" together on the same ship for 30 years until they are all in their 50s and 60s. Sitting in the same chair, doing the same job forever. I get why they decided that for practical purposes, but it didnt make a lot sense otherwise.

In any case, more should have been done with Saavik. It's not like her and Ilia replacing Sulu and Chekov would have been a great loss for the movies, stories or future shows. If anything, they were an upgrade. Meanwhile, the replaced characters can still appear, just in other capacities. Like Sulu and the Excelsior in ST VI and Chekov and the Relian in ST II. Alas.

Same goes for any character of that movie. So what?

More like their own interpretation, nothing there you can’t find, for example, elsewhere on this thread.

I ten to agree, but commercial reasons and nimoy wanting to keep the original cast together gave us what we got.
Also, I have to remind that Valeris was Saavik until they decided fans wouldn’t accept her as a traitor.

Yes, that's right. That's what I meant by running out of ideas for Saavik. Let me amend that to them running out of good ideas for Saavik. But yeah I get it. Keep the gang together till the end.

I do think it would have helped Trek more in the long run to be more like franchises that have allowed evolving, changing casts over the years. Alas, that is not the way they went, and TNG jumped 80 years ahead for a clean, fresh start instead of making the next generation be the actual next generation, set on Ent-A or Ent-B and keep going from where the movies left off.

By all means, please post some evidence that the fandom as a whole thought the things that you claim they thought about Saavik. And evidence from someone other than yourself that this film ‘ruined’ Saavik’s character. Until then, I’m just going to assume that you’re speaking for yourself and not speaking for Star Trek fans everywhere.

And I’ve made it very clear in my posts that I’m giving my opinion, and not speaking for the fandom as a whole. So I’m not sure what your issue is.

Eh, the good old "Mimimi, new Trek is bad, this * is good" take...
*"this" means the "return to self-perceived former glory" - although this "former glory" always will be subjective.
People, who grew up with TOS said after watching TNG for the first time "Meh - it's not that great". Same goes for people, who grew up with TNG, DS9 and VOY. Some of them looked at DSC and said "Yikes!" - while people, who grew up with DSC could look at TOS and say "Cringe!"

And while I think, that, what they did with this short-film is nothing short of being awesome, the next videos should also have some lines of dialogue.

We have to consider that TNG started after the fourth movie though, they wanted it to be unencumbered by the next theatrical adventures of the TOS cast.
In the OP.

Possibly meaning "Curtis."
Definitely. Thanks for pointing out the error, editing.

Just watched this. I thought it was poignant, tastefully done, and appreciated them showing the two old friends together at the "end." It just seems right. Or is the journey just beginning? ;)
YMMV

I do feel McCoy should have been a part of this in some fashion although I acknowledge you can only show so much in an 8 minute short. They chose to focus on the big two. It's great that Paramount, Shatner, and the Nimoy family gave their blessing to it as well. Is it canon? I'd like to think so. They tossed so many easter eggs and call backs from some of the modern Trek outings into it that it would be a shame to not get any follow up. Especially the Section 31 Kirk skeleton in stasis. I think Sam Witwer as Kirk could pull it off after watching this short pretty well.
