He does - he says "Even information about those creatures erases itself over time".

I thought so.

Given that they were still using Amy's photo of one several months later, I'm pretty sure they meant knowledge rather than information. That is, anything written/stored/etc. is retained, but anything memorized eventually fades. Given the context of that scene and the way it was explained to Canton, that's the only thing that makes sense.

The orphanage caretaker, however, did demonstrate how even written data might be erased; by cleaning it up thinking someone else had put it there.

Not necessarily, yes, they were using the photo to make the hologram but we don't know the shelf life of the data is. Of course we don't know what was going on in the orphanage, how long that had been there, if it was the caretaker writing it, who he was talking to, who the woman in the door was and various other things, so that might have been someone else trying to tell him to get out and the post hypnotic suggestion was telling him to clean it off.

He couldn't be more explicit in the letter because the original letter that he read as Young #11 wasn't more explicit. He's trapped by preserving the existing time line ;)

And how does he even know that?

Argh! This gets worse the more you think about it.

The same way he remembered Rory when he got erased from time - he's a Time Lord. :)

Nope, he was effected by them too.

To some extent - while the humans would forget the Silents even existed, it seemed the Doctor could remember their existence but not what they looked like. Although the humans seemed to get better at it the more they were exposed. On the TARDIS the Doctor told Canton to describe the creature and he replied "I can't"; if he'd forgotten them entirely he should have said "What creature?".

I suppose that was just a hologram, may not have had the same effect.

I'm starting to think "Old No. 11" (which is starting to sound like a locomotive) isn't actually the Doctor at all.

I remember those crisp autumn evenings making the Topeka to Santa Fe run. Old No. 11 chugged slowly but steadily, pouring thick clouds of coal smoke into the rapidly fading light. I studied my Old No. 11 (neat in a highball, 'natch) as it glimmered like a Gimlet in the last rays of the setting sun. Aromatic clouds Old No. 11 perfumed the compartment from my hand-rolled cigarillo as I contemplated just what the hell was growing inside Amy...

Dang, that Old No. 11 Corp is quite the Franchise. :guffaw:

Thought for today.

The person in the spacesuit talking to Old 11 is... Young 11.

Not sure why. Just think it is.

I'll check later but I'm sure he said "Even information about the erased itself over time".
Right. Information about them gets erased over time. In context he was talking about discussions about them even when they weren't present, not recorded data. As made evident immediately after he said that when he activated the hologram of a photo taken of one of them over three months prior.

His point was that they would eventually forget they had that discussion. Not that the data would be deleted from the TARDIS' databank, or Amy's phone. They'd just eventually (<-- keyword) forget it existed because they'd forget about that discussion. At least until the next time they had a similar discussion in the near future.

^ I used to buy a fine No. 6 blend from a tobacconists, many years ago. There were more than 11 blends. Not sure abut the "old" part, though...

That's actually a quite nice twist because the rest of them think they are keeping a secret from the Doctor but in reality he is keeping a secret from them.

Except the way old 11 talks to the spacesuited figure didn't seem like he was talking to himself. "It's ok, I know its you." That doesn't sound like something you'd say to your younger self, because you'd know he knows it's you...

My head hurts!

Whoever was in the suit, he was giving instructions on how to fire it at him (when it goes to the long shot).
