60th Anniversary 1701 Cutaway

I dug around to find the highest res version on the website and made a wallpaper

Looking at the details:
Likes: Placement of Main Engineering and his design for the matter/antimatter reactor and power feeds. :techman:
Dislikes: Moving the bridge turbolift to be behind the Captain's Chair in order to "straighten out" the bridge angle.:thumbdown:
Confused: The Hangar design. :confused:

They could have easily kept the bridge straight, left the door and drew machinery with spare cars easily enough. It's not that hard to reconcile the intended angle of the bridge to the model.
 
I was just looking through my emails and totally unrelated I found some pictures from an article in the Titan Star Trek Magazine #78 that Cushman co-authored with Gary Kerr in 2020! And it's got images from this poster! (Not his original one, I'm almost certain.)

So he's been working on this for a LONG time!
 
Yeah, the bridge close-up shows the proper layout, but the large image also has a turbolift car using the nub, so that part of the drawing is a little messy.

The secondary hull is sort of a mix of the Drexler 1701 cross-section and the Probert/Kimble TMP drawings. Cushman uses TMP placement for Main Engineering and the hangar/cargo deck for his big-ass hangar, and Drexler's giant power conduit for the dish.

Placement of the access crawlway from "That Which Survives" also makes sense with the position of the dilithium chamber in Engineering corresponding to a secondary hull M/AM reactor under the floor there (even though in TOS/TAS the reactors were likely intended to be entirely contained within the nacelles).

I do like that the TAS nacelle interior is semi-preserved.

My understanding is that the turbolift always comes up into the nub, it just slides out and over to actually open onto the bridge. So in the nub is always the 2nd reserve turbolift car which can then immediately move behind the bridge door after the first car sinks straight down.
 
I'm not seeing that - Uhura seems to be behind the captain, as always. The turbolift car slides sideways, just like in Cushman's original cutaway.

Can't see the details from the video and Matt Cushman says in the video that the bridge is not at an angle. The turbo cars look to be about 4-5 feet diameter in order to cram them into the space. Like @drt said, looks messy. Also looks like there are three cars waiting on deck 2.

Cushman has flattened the depth of the turbolift alcove to make the turbolift appear to fit inside the dome at this angle. You have to cheat somewhere if you want to make the bridge fit straight forward. It simply doesn't work without rescaling or distorting something. If you play fair with the scale and shape of both interior and exterior, you end up with the turbolift on station in the exterior tube and an offset bridge.

It wasn't what MJ wanted when he designed her, but it is difficult to claim he didn't know about the problem since, when he designed a truly workable forward-facing bridge for Phase II, he included two offset "mickey mouse ear" turbolift tubes. He knew the original design had to be offset if it were considered as a real object.

That article talked about a book.

Titan didn't bite, apparently. Now this kind of thing is what Bezos needs to do...leave real space to NASA/Elon....and be a patron of the arts.

Had I his wealth, I'd contact Titan, pay for them to have a fan art division for Aridas and others for more SHIPS OF THE LINE, and operate at a loss. I'd eat the costs....same with TOMY products.

And yes, it seems that Cushman shrunk the diameter of the turbolift cars into little pellets in order to fit them around the Bridge dome - the same solution he used in his first cutaway, if I recall correctly.

We really need to let go of the 947 ft. figure. Make it a little bigger. Then I would alter Franz Joseph with a forward facing bridge, less horizontal elevator shafts, and more deck height throughout.

I would give up one deck in FJ's engineering hull to give the bottom cargo deck double height.

Where there's room to spare now, you can always use more emergency gas supplies, battery rooms, life support machinery, piping and wiring, food storage, waste treatment, and fresh water tanks. And add some kind of deflector shield machinery where FJ put a swimming pool.

I agree - the one thing we have for scale in TOS is the Shuttlebay miniature (built at 1:12) , and it needs a ship length of around 1,080 to fit inside.
 
Why must we hold so tight to 430 crew?
The 430 figure (428 in "Charlie X") is repeated in dialogue on multiple occasions in the episodes themselves.
The phrase, "nine hundred and forty-seven feet," is never uttered onscreen even once.

What's established on screen in dialogue takes precedence over set dressing and graphics.
What's clearly spoken or, in the case of graphics, legible onscreen takes precedence over what's unspoken or blurry and illegible onscreen.
Behind the scenes information given in the series bible are guidelines, subject to being amended and overwritten by the production team or its designated successors.

No Star Trek story has ever - or will ever - hinge on the TOS-era Constitution-class starship being exactly 947 feet long. In practice, the Enterprise is just as big or as small as it is needed to be for the effects shots to work and to give the impression of size and mass, whether it be Jefferies' original 500-ish foot length of "The Cage," or the 947 foot length he settled on for the series, or the 1450-ish feet Drexler used for his cutaway, or the 442 meters of the SNW visualization of the ship. No matter the specific measurements, the Enterprise is big.
 
I’ll just say this about the 947 foot length - it’s big enough. What people have to let go of is the idea that the sets were what was in the ship. Over and over again, the sets were warped and twisted and rotated and force perspectived and in every other imaginable way made to appear on film different than what was built. The sets are a general idea of what would go in the ship.

Furthermore, there is value to having the ship at least have the capacity to feel cramped. We haven’t seen 95% of that ship. There may be a TOS rec deck that is big enough for all the crew to cram into, and there may be TOS versions of the narrow TMP corridors where people can really run into each other. For some reason - I’ll blame it on TMP - there is this need to make the Enterprise be a big hotel in space. You really have to decide what you want to evoke- in TOS, WW2 veterans evoked what they knew, for viewers who also knew. Naval ships. Submarines. Military aircraft. All cramped, utilitarian spaces. We should stop wishing this thing was something other than what it plainly was intended to be. Give it a break - Jefferies doubled the size once already. And 947 feet is exactly the size - the size of a 1960s aircraft carrier - that the people imagining the stories wanted the ship to be. Trekkie-come-latelys shouldn’t go f$&king with their work.
