That *is* a nice touch. He got them pretty damn accurately, I'd say. I'm curious why he didn't go with the original sound effects since it would be so much easier, no one can deny his efforts here.

Some of them had to be tweaked for length. Others JJ wanted them to honor the original, but have their own distinct "sound"

Would the originals have worked? I'm in no way, shape or form a sound tech (I tend to point at things and say 'make it work') but I thought there would have been a gap in sound quality.

But yeah - loved hearing them in a modern movie.. especially the chair-comm.

Loved the effort throughout, and commented on Ben Burtt's dedication and affection to the original in the post about his interview. Other than the chair comm, my favorite on first viewing was the TOS warp sound at the very end as big E escapes the edge of the black hole. Just one more nice touch in a movie riddled with them.

i loved it, right from the opening scene you have that familiar sound from the original series. really gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. i can't imagine anyone not liking it.
I'll second that. As soon as the Kelvin came on screen and the ping started playing, I think I audibly gasped and then got this big stupid grin on my face. It really set the tone for the rest of the movie. It got to the point where I started listening for the sounds and I was constantly pleased as they popped up.

Have to agree, maybe the most effective usage of the 60's effects references was the very opening even before we got to see the whole Kelvin (zooming out from the hull if I remember correctly).

I thought it was awesome. I think TOS nailed some of those sound effects and the update versions in later movies and series just didn't hit the mark. The fact that many picked them out speaks to their strength.

OMG. This is sooo the best part of the movie.

At the very first minute, the very first thing we hear in the entire movie is the TOS viewer pings. I grinned from ear to ear. Absolutely loved it.

And the sound effects littered the movie. Communicator pips, random button sounds on the bridge, the hail button on the chair, Background chatter from other decks- and classic scanner sounds on the bridge, McCoys tricorder and even the FUCKING WARP CHARGE UP SOUND. OMG, Brilliant. And we STILL cant forget the viewer pings, fanGasm or what.

Even the damn transporter shimmer sound effect was used, subtle underneath the new sound, but it was definately there.

Bring on more, damnit, i want more TOS sounds.

And the beauty of it is, if you dont know theyre from a 60s tv show, you'd think they were created for movie. Excellent, a nice little in-gag for us Trekkies.

Oh, for got to mention the classic boatswain whistle (used in the show for intra-ship hails)...

Anyone hear that?

Yep, it was Captain Pikes whistle to the cadets in the fight, how cool. ;)

Sounds like the doors opening, the phasers, the hail and so on were just a little bit too TOS for my liking. Not only did they sound too analog, but they got my attention; distracting me from the film.

I think I would have enjoyed the movie slightly better if they used less TOS and more original sounds.

I'm confused, what do you mean by analog? -We live in the digital age, yet most people I know have very analogue ringtones on their digital phones...

I meant the analog synthesizers from the TOS age; a sine or sawtooth wave with a modulator and such; they have a very distinct sound, I think. Of course, I could be wrong. It was just my impression; perhaps it was colored by my foreknowledge that the sound editor used some of these old machines to re-create the TOS sounds.

Ok, get it now! -thanks.

In the -generally very noisy movie- i certainly didn't pick up on any detail like that.

I didn't hear as many as I was led to beleive there were going to be. I certainly didn't hear the door or the phaser. The alert was changed from the trailer too.

I really liked the sound work in this film. I noticed some TOS type sounds, but didn't find them obtrusive or out of place.

That... disappointed me. That's just one of those distinctive Star Trek things that should've been kept.

(Generations was guilty of the same thing, I believe, dropping the old klaxon in favor of a much more subdued one later adopted by Voyager.)

It was the exact opposite for me - the use of so many familiar sound effects made the new setting feel right to me. Visually, the interiors of the new Enterprise aren't like any of the previous Trek ships, so the use of the old-style sounds brought some much-needed familiarity to the new ship.

I thought they were awsome and in TOS I thought they sounded cheesy, but in the movie it just seemed to fit. To me it made this be more realistic and reminded me of NASA.

I finally remembered where that alert-sound Bones' console during the KM-test made is from: the alert-claxon from TMP...
