i loved it, right from the opening scene you have that familiar sound from the original series. really gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. i can't imagine anyone not liking it.

Which is exactly why people should have waited to see the movie to pass judgment instead of the hailstorm of complaints we got very much prior to May 8th.
As for the sounds, I picked up on them the first time I saw it, from the bridge ambiance in the very first seconds of the film to the sound of Kirk's comm panel. I thought it was a nod that fans would enjoy but wouldn't seem out of place to a newcomer.
Very nice. I was all happy, and non-Trekkies didn't notice. So, sweet touch. Nice homage. Those people really knew what they were doing. *sigh*
The one I like the most was the alert sound from the Kobayashi Maru scene amost the same as in TMP (not the classic Red Alert sound). I wouldn't have thought I'd hear that in Trek again.

The sound designer did an interview about his work on the film.
He didn't use any of the ACTUAL sound FX from the 60s, but did a recreation of them instead. He said that if you listen carefully enough they are just a hair off from the originals.

That *is* a nice touch. He got them pretty damn accurately, I'd say. I'm curious why he didn't go with the original sound effects since it would be so much easier, no one can deny his efforts here.
I thought they sounded sharper and better. I would think using the very same originals would have just sounded naff to newcomers.
Oh, I don't know how magical today's audio technology is, but if the sound designer made them a "hair" off, it's not like anyone would notice. Hell, I didn't notice. But his taking the time to recreate rather than reuse is very respectable.
^ I agree. It's the details that make this movie. It's not a garden variety, manufacturing line, Hollywood cash-cow at all, well maybe yes to the cash-cow part

Sounds like the doors opening, the phasers, the hail and so on were just a little bit too TOS for my liking. Not only did they sound too analog, but they got my attention; distracting me from the film.
I think I would have enjoyed the movie slightly better if they used less TOS and more original sounds.
