50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

I think it's implied in "Tribbles" that Spock is not having a chicken sandwich. Both trays are overrun by tribbles, but Kirk says "My chicken sandwich," not "Our chicken sandwiches." I think the makers' intent was that Spock had a veggie tray.

Spock also eats differently here, although it's not clear why:

Note the same silverware is carried over from "The Naked Time."
Looks like Plomeek soup. I wonder if it's a dish best served cold like... gazpacho?

I approve the smeggy reference... I just had my first gazpacho soup... not bad.

Odd, if they didn't have any remark early on to establish the non meat eating, yet they got the message across anyway, and were consistent about it. Maybe some things were in the show's "bible", and they assumed someone would get around to saying it out loud?

Every time I've seen AOY, it's seemed like a long established thing that Vulcans don't eat meat, but I can't think of anything but that COTEOF scene to back that up.

Spock gets about as close as he can to admitting he's a vegetarian, without actually saying so, during the briefing room scene in Wolf in the Fold.

Would Spock eat fake meat made out of vegetables like we have now?

Probably, a vegetable is a vegetable no matter which way it's shaped.

But would he eat the synthesized meat of the future, the kind that's made of not vegetables but "real" meat, but that didn't come from any live animal? :vulcan:

The brightly colored food cubes are considered non-vegetarian (to Vulcans). Or maybe Vulcan's have a food code similar to kosher food.

If Spock’s vegetarianism is a common Vulcan trait, then I’d say that he wouldn’t eat simulated meat, for two reasons: He wasn’t raised in a culture in which meat-eating is a norm to be emulated; and so long as he’s consuming sufficient nourishment in a palatable manner, it would be illogical to disguise that nourishment in a less palatable form. OTOH, if it was all he had to choose from, then he’d probably find eating such foods logical if unpalatable.

I want to know where you get all that vegetation on a desert world. (Although Disco showed a heck of a lot of trees. So Vulcan is more like Phoenix than Yuma.)

There are different kinds of deserts, of course, and I assume Vulcan isn't a planetwide Sahara. Northern Nevada is high desert but there's not shortage of vegetation (sagebrush, etc.) and, in the higher elevations, pinion pines (from which native americans would get pine nuts).

I'm not pushing this as a hard and fast rule. And of course it's not like primitive Vulcans became veggies. Surak's time was still a technologically advanced time. I gather comparable to 20th century Earth. At least.

People starve in deserts. That's why they're bad places to be in. Vulcan can't be a desert. It's hotter than Earth, and the air is thinner. I remember that from Amok Time. That climate is perfect for Vulcans, though, and for its vegetation, presumably. "Arid" was used to describe it, I think. A relative term.
-----------------------
They may have shown them on Vulcan wandering around in a desert in "Enterprise"... I forget. If so, they have deserts, that doesn't mean it's all like that. I think they have temperatures that are like Earth's deserts, but I'll guess that their vegetation copes as well as Vulcans themselves do.
---------------------------------
It seems to be an ethical thing, their not eating meat, so no qualms about eating meat substitutes, I just doubt they'd bother with them. As a non-meat-eater for 30 years, I've never thought there was any point to them. Just eat other stuff that really is what it is, don't trick yourself into thinking something's meat.

It's mentioned in TMOST:
A basic tenet of the Vulcan philosophy is nonviolence. Vulcans do not believe in killing in any form. They may hunt for the skill involved in tracking but eons ago ceased to kill the animal they are tracking. As a vegetarian, the mere idea of eating animal carcasses, cooked or not, is revolting to Spock. Even his vegetable diet is limited to the simplest of vegetable life forms.
(It goes on to say that despite their nonviolent philosophy, Vulcans are capable of killing quite efficiently -- as long as there's a logical reason, of course.)

Just ask Sam Kinison. ;)

I presume by now it was known that the show wouldn't be coming back for Season 4, or how did it work back in the day?

As I said above, there are different kinds of deserts, from desert desert to arid climates that people call deserts even if they don’t meet all the requirements for the former. Also, there are places that are desert like and receive little precipitation but get water via runoff from snowpack on high mountains, hence rivers or deep aquifers. So it’s a little more complex than is it or isn’t it a desert. I consider it unlikely Vulcan would be all “desert” of whatever stripe.

Just a gentle reminder that the series finale is now a month away so that you all don't forget we still have one to go through here... ;)
