I approve the smeggy reference... I just had my first gazpacho soup... not bad.

Odd, if they didn't have any remark early on to establish the non meat eating, yet they got the message across anyway, and were consistent about it. Maybe some things were in the show's "bible", and they assumed someone would get around to saying it out loud?
Would Spock eat fake meat made out of vegetables like we have now?
Spock gets about as close as he can to admitting he's a vegetarian, without actually saying so, during the briefing room scene in Wolf in the Fold.
Probably, a vegetable is a vegetable no matter which way it's shaped.
But would he eat the synthesized meat of the future, the kind that's made of not vegetables but "real" meat, but that didn't come from any live animal?

If Spock’s vegetarianism is a common Vulcan trait, then I’d say that he wouldn’t eat simulated meat, for two reasons: He wasn’t raised in a culture in which meat-eating is a norm to be emulated; and so long as he’s consuming sufficient nourishment in a palatable manner, it would be illogical to disguise that nourishment in a less palatable form. OTOH, if it was all he had to choose from, then he’d probably find eating such foods logical if unpalatable.

There are different kinds of deserts, of course, and I assume Vulcan isn't a planetwide Sahara. Northern Nevada is high desert but there's not shortage of vegetation (sagebrush, etc.) and, in the higher elevations, pinion pines (from which native americans would get pine nuts).
People starve in deserts. That's why they're bad places to be in. Vulcan can't be a desert. It's hotter than Earth, and the air is thinner. I remember that from Amok Time. That climate is perfect for Vulcans, though, and for its vegetation, presumably. "Arid" was used to describe it, I think. A relative term.

They may have shown them on Vulcan wandering around in a desert in "Enterprise"... I forget. If so, they have deserts, that doesn't mean it's all like that. I think they have temperatures that are like Earth's deserts, but I'll guess that their vegetation copes as well as Vulcans themselves do.

It seems to be an ethical thing, their not eating meat, so no qualms about eating meat substitutes, I just doubt they'd bother with them. As a non-meat-eater for 30 years, I've never thought there was any point to them. Just eat other stuff that really is what it is, don't trick yourself into thinking something's meat.

As I said above, there are different kinds of deserts, from desert desert to arid climates that people call deserts even if they don’t meet all the requirements for the former. Also, there are places that are desert like and receive little precipitation but get water via runoff from snowpack on high mountains, hence rivers or deep aquifers. So it’s a little more complex than is it or isn’t it a desert. I consider it unlikely Vulcan would be all “desert” of whatever stripe.
Is this show still on? I thought they replaced it with The Saint.
