50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

I think of that great final shot of the nova, and the planet winking out, as the final moment of Trek, very poetic, almost heartbreaking.... Too bad Remastered ruined it. Because of the gap, I think of TI as episode 1 of a season 4 that never happened...

I really couldn't agree more. I'm glad someone else agrees with me about this. I couldn't have said it better. It's a great example of how attempting to increase the realism of VFX can utterly ruin the far more significant emotional beats.

I must not be asking my question correctly so I'll try one more time.

At some point, coverage of Ike's death ended. Then there came another Friday. What showed in Star Trek's time slot on the Friday after all coverage of Ike's death was over? Was it the Saint?

You'd specifically asked what aired March 28. That was the originally scheduled date for "Turnabout Intruder," and the date of Eisenhower's death.

As far as I can determine from the dates on IMDb, the first episode of The Saint to air in that slot was on April 18. As to what aired for the two weeks in-between, I couldn't say. The likely guess would be Trek reruns.

Okay, thanks.

According to this site:

*March 21, 1969: pre-empted by a documentary special, "Hollywood: The Selznick Years"
*March 28, 1969: pre-empted by an NBC News Special recalling the life of former president Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had died earlier that day (NBC had planned to air the season finale, "Turnabout Intruder", but this was cancelled at the last minute)
*April 4, 1969: repeat of "Spectre of the Gun"

On April 11, 1969 Star Trek was pre-empted by a special episode of the documentary series NBC Experiment in Television, "Fellini: A Director's Notebook." The following week NBC cancelled Star Trek, moving The Saint into the 10 P.M. Friday time-slot.

However, I've checked Newspapers.com, and it seems that at least some stations broadcast Trek on April 11 as well.

That is strange that they did not show Turnabout Intruder on April 4,1969 instead of Spectre of the Gun. They pre-empted Turnabout for Ike, so they could have pre-empted the Spectre repeat for Turnabout. Oh well. On to All Our Yesterdays. This is one of my favorite episodes, based upon the Spock-McCoy dynamic.I like how they get into it. Spock finally after 3 years of McCoy's badgering gets really pissed at him. It is McCoy who tells Spock what is happening to him. As far as Kirk is concerned "Witch, Witch" said in a taunting voice. Finally, I find it odd that after Scotty tells Kirk that Its now or never that the planet is about to blow up that Kirk takes his time and greets Spock and McCoy as they return to the present. That sense of urgency does not seem to be there. It seems like they would not have any time to lollygag around.

Let us not forget that there was no call for recent history!
If such a scenario were to occur here on Earth where and when would most of us like to relocate to?

Can't think of a time that wouldn't be horribly worse. So tomorrow may rain but I'll follow the sun.

It's the last episode in Stardate chronology!

But it takes place 5000 years in the past, so isn't it kinda also the first? ;)

The remastered explosion looks less realistic and more cartoonish if anything...

They nicked this premise for that Terra Nova show a few years back and they picked Dinosaurs!

Well, at least the show ended on a high note(for now ). The episode could have worked as a finale, though it might have been a tad odd that we don't get to see anyone except The Big Three, and we only hear Scotty's voice. There's not even a single scene set on the Enterprise which is also highly unusual.

Was this the first mention of Vulcans being vegetarian?

I'm not exactly sure, but it's at least strongly implied in "The City on the Edge of Forever" by this line:

KIRK: Mister Spock, I've brought you some assorted vegetables, baloney in a hard roll for myself, and I've spent the other nine tenths of our combined salaries for the last three days on filling this order for you.

But that's a sausage derived from mortadella, Henny!!! Also known as Pork I believe! Or that it contains cubes of Pork fat at least! :techman:
How come James Blish referred to you as Hanoch instead of Henoch too? :wtf:
JB

Every time I've seen AOY, it's seemed like a long established thing that Vulcans don't eat meat, but I can't think of anything but that COTEOF scene to back that up.

I think it's implied in "Tribbles" that Spock is not having a chicken sandwich. Both trays are overrun by tribbles, but Kirk says "My chicken sandwich," not "Our chicken sandwiches." I think the makers' intent was that Spock had a veggie tray.

Spock also eats differently here, although it's not clear why:

Note the same silverware is carried over from "The Naked Time."
